Be proud of the Irish guards lads, no matter which tune they play...they are proud Irishmen of both Protestant and Roman Catholic religions....they fight side by side, and die side by side...be proud of 'Micks'

A proud Roman Catholic wouldn't stand with anyone who plays the Sash. You do know what Orangeism represents, and what it thinks of Catholicism?
@rockinbillyboy
@rockinbillyboy Год назад
@@TheBlaert A Scottish court ruled some years ago on a man accused of singing a "sectarian song"....The Sash. They found that the song was NOT sectarian in any way, and was a simple folk song. You should read the words of it some time...honestly, you won't melt.

The tune of "The Sash" was well-known around Europe, and before the lyrics were added, it was a love song that lamented division between people. Instead of "it was old and it was beautiful", the lyrics were "she was young and she was beautiful" and is in Broadside Ballads (1787), titled "Irish Molly O".

@Dherynia Flaharta Butchers apron? Regularly voted the prettiest flag by those who like that sort of thing. Ireland had the chance of choosing a pretty flag in 1922 and what did they do? Decided to use a washed out Italian tricolour. And yes whether or not your arse likes it they are the Irish guards made up of Protestant and Catholics from North and South of the border and those who have no religion. I've never killed anyone nor has anyone I know we love the peace I hope you do too?

All had or have killed many many innocent men women and children between them. I see no moral high ground unless you are directly killing to save your own or families life. And as for ISIS and equivalents they have no saving graces anyone who beheads kind selfless volunteer care workers ect deserve nothing but our upmost contempt and disgust. The tune for both ‘the Hat my father wore’ and ‘the Sash my father wore’ is a popular 18th century Scots/Irish ballad ‘My Irish Molly O’ about a Glaswegian lad rejected by an Irish girl - the lyrics include ‘She is young and she is beautiful and her likes I've never known’. The American Irish hat song and the Ulster boys sash song both adapted the old Molly ballad for their own purposes.

@@Dingo-1 i was getting mixed up with another song but tbh although most scots and orangemen will know it as the sash. I know from personal experience that the irish guards band refer to this song as Irish Molly O here's a link to a cover of the original song for you. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-k0DxJNhIPMw.html

Ken Frazer, former pipe major of the 1st Irish Guards, told me they call this one "the political set." During the Troubles, they had to be careful not to play it during times of political tension in NI or the rest of the UK.

Interesting how the traditionally Catholic regiment is playing a song associated with Protestants, especially being played immediately after Minstrel Boy, a song associated with Irish nationalism and considered a rebel song!

I love that sash tune. Who wrote it? Is the Wolfe Tones version the original?

The Sash is not sectarian or bigoted , The lyrics are thought to be around 100 years old, and the melody has been traced back to the early 19th century. The tune of "The Sash" was well known around Europe, and before the lyrics were added, it was a love song that lamented division between people. Instead of "it was old and it was beautiful", the lyrics were "she was young and she was beautiful" and is in Broadside Ballads (1787). Having said that, It is old but it's beautiful

No, they ARE the Irish Guards. Coldstream are a separate regiment within the Household Division.

I disagree with the concept of a royal family, not whether they represent value for money. I am happy to pay taxes, higher taxes even, so long as they are spent on services for the people and not the establishment. This debate will rage on for many years i'm afraid. Whether Scots will get the chance to vote on the subject is the real concern for me.
