I like to think John and Jack are perfect representatives for the old west. John is the form of a dying era and how the west is treated in the Industrial Age, as he tears down his gang to the last man. Ending the gang. With his death by the government. But jack, sure he seeks vengeance. But in the end (if you remember the Easter egg in gta V) moved on afterwards. Lived as a writer and ends it as practically a hero. The last Western hero and of his father’s gang. Putting down a government dog till he’s painted red. Wearing the hat his father and his uncle figure Arthur, in some poetic justice. Giving his fallen family, a red dead redemption.

There's an old anti-colonial propaganda poster that shares a similar sentiment. I think it was about the European response to the Boxer Rebellion. On the left side, it is titled "Barbarie", the image depicts what looks like a man in typical Manchu/Qing garb, on top of what looks like a man in typical European colonial/military garb, about to slash him with a sabre. On the right side, it is titled "Civilisation", the image depicts what looks like a man in typical European colonial/military garb, on top of what looks like a man in typical Manchu/Qing garb, about to slash him with a sabre. The caption that went with it stated: "It's all a matter of perspective. When a Chinese coolie strikes a French soldier the result is a public cry of ‘Barbarity!’ But when a French soldier strikes a coolie, it's a necessary blow for civilization." It goes along with a lot of anti-imperialist/colonial posters at the time, when western expeditions to "civilize" Asian countries often meant slaughtering a lot of the inhabitants of the lands they were "civilizing"

To add to your point about not being able to escape your past when you think about it Edger Ross eventually finds out for himself that he too can't escape his past when John's son Jack guns him down in a shoot out. If Ross had just let John go he would have been fine but his insistence on finding a new monster to replace Dutch only serves to get himself killed.

@MirandaAndUh

@@FlamRackett One bright side there is that Jack's life as an outlaw, if we're to give it more than when we turn the game off, is only as much as the player provides. During the epilogue, the old west is pretty much entirely tamed with no space or opportunity for gunslingers and outlaws. I always got the impression that all Jack ever trained for was to one day set out to kill Ross. He's educated, smart, and young; I pretty much stopped playing after the credits rolled, as though Jack put on his gunslinger gear for a couple days to avenge his father when he knew he was ready, and then switched back to whatever his day to day life was after that.

@Kuro788
@Kuro788 5 лет назад
ace142014, They definitely screwed him over. That being said from the perspective the government John was just a hired-gun who was criminal, whether that was in the past or not didn't matter to them. He was still strictly speaking, an already condemned criminal. Even the act of trying to gain his freedom can be construed as more criminal activity since it was pretty clear the feds were just using/conning him. Perhaps emblematic of an uncaring industrialized system the feds represent, they didn't look into who John Marston was as a human being. Unlike the players who followed John on his journey and found him to be a very down-to-earth and caring person.

why bring it up now? Because all of it carried over to the present. The same types that fooled people back then are still doing it now. Ones who turn folks against minorities. Not as violent as the US
@KayO199X
@KayO199X 5 лет назад
Regis I noticed you subscribe to the RT channel. Russia has had a far more violent history, with Joseph Stalin having infamously imposed a mass famine on the Ukraine. You may think the US treatment of the Natives was violent, but it wasn't much different from how the Australians treated the Aboriginals. I'm not saying the US is free of violence or bad people, but to say that the US is the more violent than every other nation is simply untrue.
@Timbo5000
@Timbo5000 5 лет назад
@@KayO199X I subscribe to a variety of news channels so that I don't have tunnel vision. It has nothing to do with how (non-)violent I think Russia is. And I was referring to how the US came to existence, not the things it has done since its existence. The grand majority of countries have societies that have lived there for tens of thousands of years. Perhaps fighting other tribes/countries, perhaps fighting internally, but not invading land halfway across the world, massacring the natives and replacing them as the main inhabitants of their land. That is the uniquely disgusting past of the US. And no, Australia wasn't the same. In the US, westward expansion was forbidden by the British and while the East was settled with the usual violence, the British left the natives in the west alone and merely traded with them. While many aboriginals died of disease and war in the east of Australia, there was no westward expansion and today, _one third_ of Australian soil is owned by Aboriginals, which is a huge patch of land. And luckily their populationis back to the level it was before Europeans came (primarily the diseases were hard on them). After the American revolution (and westward expansion was partly the motivation for the revolution, among other things), the westward expansion and manifest destiny saw Americans butcher the natives en masse and eventually replace them as the main inhabitant of the US. You even had sterilisation campaigns for native women well into the _1970s_ . Genocide on this scale is rare and particularly nasty, possibly even the worst kind of genocide that ever took place. Can't think of a comparison, not even the holocaust
@KayO199X
@KayO199X 5 лет назад
Regis I look over your list of subscription. They are all very liberal with no conservative channels. Only listening to left wing opinions will most definitely give you tunnel vision. @@KayO199X And saying that they all died from exposure and wasn't the fault of the government who destroyed people's way of life, cut their hair and beat the language out of them, smashed babies heads in with rifle butts, integrated a literal system where if we went off the reservation we were arrested or shot as wards of the state, forced to walk nearly 1,000 miles at gunpoint where you had to leave your sick elders in a ditch because they "died of disease not by gunshot," is "absurd and deeply disrespectful to those who suffered through it." I don't want to be a dick, but when they shoved tribes onto plots of land and gave them rotten food and insufficient rations that led to a famine my tribe calls "Starvation Winter" and you try to just brush that away saying "it's not as bad as what these people went through so so quite complaining" I get a little mad. Pain is pain, no matter who feels it. Just saying 'They all died of disease,' is just crazy to me. Colonists brought diseases on accident I know, but a disease can infect someone a lot easier when they're freezing and starving on a reservation. Sorry for sounding hostile, I do understand that this might not be what you meant, but saying "most natives died of disease not from acts of violence." forgets who brought that disease, who didn't give them medicine, and disregards anything that wasn't done with a gun. There are 30 year old's out there who lived through residential schools, the last one closed in 1996. Millennials went through that. Does the wider America remember that? No, not truly. People might hear about it in debates or passing mention, but no one other than us really remembers anymore. And that's what hurts, because when you look at black people you see ghosts of the chains, when you look at us what do most people see? A caricature of something long dead, and a culture that's currently on the brink. Sorry if I seem tinfoil hatty but this gets me worked up I suppose lol. Thanks if you do actually read my message, sorry it's so long. (and if you do look at my channel, check out dat playlist, is quality *content* )

Literally no happy endings. Arthur might have the closest one to it. He decided to change his ways and do good for people. He helped most of the gang escape. He even died for his brother so he can live the life he never had, so that John can live with his family away from all this. He made John become the honorable man that he was in the first game. Yet at the same time, he witnessed everyone else in the gang get killed or become a horrible person and couldn’t even live a good life because he had faith and loyalty to them. Eliza and his son died because he wasn’t there to protect them, instead he was with the gang. Mary and Arthur could have never worked because Arthur and the gang. Hell, even Arthur wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. The last glimmer of hope for her and him was just a desperate Arthur reassuring Mary, but more importantly himself, that it could work. But it couldn’t. Because he had some people that he cared for, and wanted to take care of. He saw his friends die, Sean who was like a little brother to him, Lenny who was the closest thing to a son to him, and Hosea. His actual father. The one who he considered to be a kind and warm person while Dutch was something else. John and Uncle died in the end so his family could be safe. And Jack turned out the worst of all. Became a cold blooded killer after witnessing his father and mother die. They tried though. In the end, they did. And they got their redemption.

Vague spoilers for both games: What’s sad about the read dead redemption series is how little redemption it leaves its characters After RDR2, we are left with the idea that Arthur’s one act of redemption/legacy is his saving of the Marston family from the increasingly doomed life of lawlessness they all lead. But we know that John is killed and Jack goes on to give up his innocent nature and become a vengeance seeking outlaw. Because even jack is doomed to live the life of the outlaw, we are basically told that there is no hope of redemption for people like Arthur and John, not even hope for a better life for their family. Basically, the Americans dream is dead for people like them

After watching this, however, my great memories of the game are amplified knowing it's also a biting critique of both the mythic west and the civilized world that replaced it. Friday can't come fast enough, I need some cowboy shootbangs.

"The idealists are killed..." accompanied by the scene of *Dutch Van Der Lindt* jumping from the cliff. I very much enjoyed your video - well thought out and appropriate. I would be very interested to see an update to the themes and scenes, revisited with the events of Red Dead Redemption 2 being held in mind. I found it to be considerably less bleak than RDR1, but the evolution of Dutch from beginning to end - compared to the free-spirited, romantically outlawed but tragically flawed inspirational leader that he was implied to be in RDR1 - to change the themes considerably depending on which perception of him you take. If anything, John's description of Dutch in RDR1 - as a leader chased to damnation by a ruthless and uncaring country - are a strong example of the past actually being rewritten, for towards the end of RDR2 Dutch is strongly suggested to be none of these things, and was just another selfish, violent monster who happened to be good at convincing people otherwise.

The Infernal Contraption I think that’s just RDR2 retconning Dutch’s character if anything. Dutch, although insane, still was still a selfless man towards the end in a warped way. Sure he killed hundreds of innocent people, but he believed that violence was the only way to achieve his goal after his nobility and kindness didn’t work. In the early days of the gang John even said that Dutch would give money to the poor and steal from the rich. His whole goal behind taking men into his gang was to teach them morals in hopes of turning them from bad men to doers of good. The only reason he becomes an unhinged psychopath in the first game was due to his loss of faith in the world and the idea of changing people and the world around him. In RDR2 however, he’s just a scumbag who couldn’t care less about any cause and only uses people as his pawns.

Watching this post-rdr2 gives me a way different reaction to how they describe Dutch and his gang. Dutch is an "idealist" but he has been revealed to be a selfish bastard, who probably only took in those Native Americans not because he sympathized with them, but because he used their anger and resentment as his own personal gain the same way he used Eagle Flies.

John Marston's main motivation was for him to be with his family and live out his days as a literal cowboy on his farm. John may have been a violent man but his most "redeemable" quality was his will to protect his family. I feel like there was a huge point missed out on that. Jack Marston redeeming his father should of been in there somewhere too. I loved this video and hope to see more RDR content from you guys.
