The Sound Couple

The Sound Couple ventures off to a unique venue that offers plenty of lively acoustics! However, the new in-ear rig helps us combat these challenges with its band debut.
Also, watch to the end where once again, we demonstrate how you can achieve an effective recording regardless of room acoustics with Capture and Studio One. With post DSP enabled from the mixer, we provide a snippet recording that only involved adjusting fader and pan levels in Studio One.
The Sound Couple primarily use PreSonus gear featuring:
PreSonus UC Surface
PreSonus CDL12
PreSonus CDL18s
PreSonus 32R
PreSonus SW5E
PreSonus NSB Stageboxes
PreSonus AVB-D16

Hey, great video, as always, very informational ! What kind of stand is the front of house rack setup on, I would love to get something like that, it’s definitely better than setting up a 3 foot table.

Eerily quiet on that stage! The power of IEM :) In such a lively room I can imagine that is a godsend. You don't need to fight the volume on stage with your main PA but can just dial it in exactly as the room demands it.

IEMs are so great. It takes some time and effort to get it right, but when you do, man. It's really amazing. There are really no good reasons to not go the IEM route, except maybe an outdoor festival type situation with a ton of bands playing really short sets.

Iem is the way to go. One tip for those getting into iem make sure you get good earbuds. I recommend 3 drivers and up. Especially for drummers you want more drivers.
@thesoundcouple

Not a bad suggestion at all....I will say that it also depends on how refined our picky you are as well. I have seen some happy with very little in their mix with inexpensive earbuds. I think it just goes to show that a lot of it is a personal decision and what matters is to experiment and find what works for you!

Thanks for the videos guys! One thing that I disagree with you about is, when deciding on how much gear to bring in, I tend to error on the side of more than enough. ESPECIALLY when it comes to center fill. In a room this size and as lively as it is, I would prefer to have 2 subs on each side so they can just idle along but you still get the presence and attack at lower volumes. I have heard you talk about it in other videos. I also understand the extra work involved, and the fact that I have only seen an identical pa once before so I don’t know it like you guys do. The system I heard sounded great btw. Anyway that’s my 2 cents, and thanks again for the videos for us gear geeks!

@djjazzyjeff1232
@djjazzyjeff1232 2 года назад
It's actually easier than you think, because cleaning up the stage sound will make the FoH sound out front cleaner and easier to get right also. Especially if you're doing your own sound from the stage. There are a few bands in my area that are on ears and do their own sound from the stage that sound incredible. Plus, as long as you're in the ballpark FoH Mix wise, 9/10 people won't even notice if it isn't perfect. It's certainly worth trying. Just have to figure out how to "sell" the idea to your bandmates!

Brutal room! Good job! (what about toe in of the mains?) There's countless mid-century gymnasium w/stage combos just like that... acoustic disasters. The IEM diminished stage sound is stunning... certainly makes a challenging room a little less challenging. I've not used them, however in THAT room, I would be inclined to experiment with significant toe-in of the Presonus cabs... in an effort to not light up the sidewalls with off axis energy. With controlled/constant directivity coverage pattern, they should perform quite well with toe-in. The benefits of C/D pattern, well toed in, ... yields a wider usable listening area whereby the sound won't collapse to the near speaker if you're way off axis. It's time/intensity trading, whereas the on-axis far source, balances with the off-axis near source. Both Geddes and Keele have published much about this. Liberty Instruments has a definitive PDF w/graphics detailing how the effect works. Thoughts on toe-in? Dig your content All the best

Thanks! The Freedom sticks will easily make it through a night. Don't quote us, but I think they are rated up to 8 hours (depending on how they are used). We occasionally will use them for extra lighting at tear down and we have lost a couple during that time, so well over 8 hours by that time.

Great video! I was wondering, when using full IEM’s do you mix in any ambient mics for the band to hear the room and the crowd?
@thesoundcouple
@thesoundcouple 2 года назад
Nope! We have yet run into a band lately that has found the need to do so. Unless you are outdoor or on a big stage, I am guessing it would be easy to fill that mix with stage wash...so I would be careful that the benefits of choosing to do that are there.

In-ears are always the best move. I've described it as a Steak vs. Hamburger situation, sure, a great burger is always good, but even a shabby one is still fine, that's what Floor Monitors are, but, a killer Steak blows the PANTS off of a killer Hamburger, every time. That also being said, a crappy steak is almost inedible, whereas a crappy hamburger is still tolerable. That's In-ears vs Wedges in a nutshell.

I like the comparison of sound on stage to out front. I play with a three piece that is resisting IEMs because they heard it was blah blah blah. As a musician with hearing loss, I really want to transition into a system like this. Any advice for convincing band members that this is the best way for low stage noise and a better experience for customer/guests?
@thesoundcouple
@thesoundcouple 2 года назад
At a recent gig with this band, one of them was telling me they subbed for another band and used a wedge....he said it was really tough and his ears felt fatigued after the gig. I am not sure how to "convince" in a what sounds like an equitable relationship. There is always going to be a whiner, but the decision to go ears should be first a business decision. In the the cases I have seen that's where it's started and there are no exceptions for members. So with that, it may not be for every band and maybe in this case, you go with IEM's for you.

Pretty cool video however I disagree about the digital aspect. Definitely have an analog whip in the rack however if your both running in the same eco system digital is a better quality signal imo... I have been doing sound going on 25 years. Appreciate the comment, but I just have to add that the modern gear makes it so much easier to get a good mix and allows you to focus on just that. I don't know if it's a good thing or not for the younger guys, but I think what accounts for some of my skills is the fact that the gears years ago was generally not as good as it is now. Half the challenge was just getting the gear to sound decent (or working) before you could really focus on the mix.

i didn't hear it mentioned what in-ear system are you using? Is it the presonus pods or are you going into some sort of headphone amps? How are you handling band members and IME do they get their own and what are you recommending? I used to do sound for a live music coffee house more music less coffee kind of thing that met at an enclosed pavilion. It would have an open mic at the beginning where they would each get two songs and then a feature for the second-half. I had one feature come in with a Behringer XR16 with everything pre routed out so all the outputs were essentially passed through from something and no they weren't using IME they just had a pre set monitor mix and then handed me cables for the House of snake. It was a husband wife so two vocals and a couple guitars a base and I forget whether they're instruments. This was also at the point when I was bringing my own XR18 and bypassing through the insert jacks the house analog mixer. Sadly between the church that owned the pavilion and 2020 the person who was running it decided to shut it. It was always exciting each month to see what random instruments i would have one song to adjust.

@thesoundcouple
@thesoundcouple Год назад
Actually needing it's functionality? Yes, it's come in handy a couple of times when power wasn't ready for us but we were able to turn the mixer on and keep working. Also, there was a time we kept tripping circuits, so we were able to run the console off the battery for a set. We realize that it's all relative in these times, but the units have pretty much tripled in price since we bought ours so they would be harder to justify them now, but glad we have them. I would now consider them more of a luxury item now if you have the money to spend whereas they used to be more on the premium high end, in which I typically will spend the extra on gear if it's adding peace of mind. Also note they are quite heavy...so something to consider. One more point...you should replace the batteries every few years, which I did about a year ago. It's not that bad of a job to do yourself, but it's another expense to consider.

I hate those gym type rooms where everything is reflective sound. When I have those venues, if possible, I set up more satellite delay speakers . My theory is, if you provide more direct sound to the audience then they will hear less reflective sound. You haven't eliminated the reflective sound but it won't be as prevalent. Just a thought..
@thesoundcouple
@thesoundcouple 4 месяца назад
Not a bad thought...but then I think budgets, more time, more gear and more tripping hazards. If I recall, they wanted us out of there in an hour....so the bigger point is the big picture. Resources and budgets are always part of the equation.

@@ruidango We hope that our videos can help you with that. "Coverage" is a very subjective term as it depends on other factors as well. We do mostly activity events where it's best effort sound coverage with our system. We can get by with less compared to a "concert" or event that has paid attendees that expect full audio coverage from any seat. Another big factor is the SPL you require and the type of music that is being played as that can impact the amount of gear you need. For us, budgets and time/resource constraints always play a big role as we only have so much gear, space in our truck, and time to set it all up and tear it down. Hi Adrian...not sure if you are asking how well it works or how does it work? So far, the band has no complaints that I am aware of with it. As far as how it works, I would suggest you check out on the Waves website which includes the link to user manual: www.waves.com/hardware/wrc1-wifi-stage-router#tab-support

Those videos you recorded of the band on stage where you can’t hear crap but the drum should be shown to those who don’t understand why musicians need stage monitors.

Hello friends please can you recommend a sound engineering school for me?
@thesoundcouple
@thesoundcouple Год назад
While Bart comes from the “school” of “on the gig training..”. Dave Rat has a great channel that covers a lot of the “technical” side of sound. One thing to keep in mind, do you want to be a studio engineer or a live FOH engineer? Each needs a different approach at mixing. With that being said, hopefully others that are in the know can chime in and recommend a sound engineering school! Best wishes to you!

@@thesoundcouple I desire to be a FOH Engineer. After learning all I need to from FOH I would wanna have a fair idea on studios engineering but FOH has been a priority for me

@@thesoundcouple I seem to lea4n faster from physical practise or constant physical practise however our systems in Africa are so outdated and I desire a first hand knowledge of new brand of tech equipment. I just wanna learn from setting up the equipment in different ways to the mix and down to excellent p4ocessing

These are my core at the moment I really need to learn. Again i desire to learn from cabling and setting up the speakers to stage monitors and side feels down to connections and mixing and further to processing sound.

Fortunately there is so much out there now compared to when Bart started about the logistics of running live sound - you're starting at a good time! Best wishes!

No trailer van is better gears won't get wet and it's secure from someone trying to steal something it happens
@thesoundcouple

The two primary reasons when we will use our trailer is if we think we may need it for quick cover/pack (a.k.a. rain is coming! Get the gear covered!) or when we need to truly need our full system.

Tell that bassist to invest in a good stand for his instrument. Leaning it against other gear like that is only asking for trouble.

These are only my words, but he is a savant on all types of guitars and this is a character trait that I have observed with people with his level of skill.

So what kind of SPL do you get with just one pair? And what's the largest area you have covered with the 4? I'm really torn between these and the QSC LA112 it's basically 3 for 1 price wise and I'm trying to justify it.

About the biggest we do are street dances and sustaining 100dB at about 100ft (mileage varies). It depends on the type of events you are doing as well. We don't really do "concert" paid events which can change your perspective and requirement (and budget). For us, move closer if you want to hear the band louder! Unless you will be flying the CDL's, it feels like you are comparing two very different cabinets...especially when you are consider a constant curve array vs. a line array. I would recommend you first determine what speaker design you need. BTW Michael Curtis YT has some good videos on cabinet selection...as far as pros/cons of speaker types.
