The Sound Couple head off to a familiar location for them...but not for you! Covid and weather has caused delays in debuting one of our most favorite gigs....and on this day, it's no different as rain threatens again!
We have some new gear to share with you to support our quest in making both the musicians and our job easier. Hope you enjoy this as much as we love playing this venue!
The Sound Couple primarily use PreSonus gear featuring:
PreSonus UC Surface
PreSonus CDL12
PreSonus CDL18s
PreSonus 32R
PreSonus SW5E
PreSonus NSB Stageboxes
PreSonus AVB-D16
Please see our "About" for a more comprehensive list of gear we use.

The Sound Couple didn’t need Noah’s Ark at this gig, but with rain covers for the CDLs, a new iPad, and plenty of in-ears for the band, Bart and Stacy turned the production at this venue into a success. Bart’s written on-screen comments help lead us through the many learning opportunities at this venue. Thanks to The Sound Couple for another truly helpful and entertaining video.

I have a pair of sandals that I leave in the van. I know people like to leave flip-flops but those things are just not safe. Don't forget an extra pair of socks!!!! There's nothing like running around a wet gig getting in the car drying your feet out and putting fresh socks on for the way home.

Yeah I know that feeling. Had a one day of a multi weekend gig this year get canceled due to concerns of heat/ humidity. I was looking at the weather thinking well it's gonna be terrible during Soundcheck but once that's done it's gonna get really nice and sure enough that's what happened. The worst part I got there really early to set everything up before the heat came, which is exactly what happened. Than I had to tear everything down but we at least got to check a couple of things.

Buy second hand gear ...you'll get so much more value for money... I started my local business in Aus at 17yrs And now after 5 years have Around $30K worth of decent gear spending nowhere near that much.. The main way I got clients was word of mouth and making good musician friends.. Best of luck :)
@makingmusiconline2309
@makingmusiconline2309 7 месяцев назад
Agreed, second hand and check out local venues for what equipment you may need. E.g. a couple of JBL EON 15s and a couple of subs, plus stage monitors … or do you need to go big for heavy thumping bass gigs, or a couple of Bose Linear PAs with or without subs for acoustic/wedding music? You can spend a lot of money starting up, so also look into what to buy and what to rent. Bart & Stacy have a fairly minimal lighting rig, but it’s very effective band, but doesn’t replace a disco setup or lighting for presentations and conferences (which may also require video projection and vari-lights, plus lapel and table microphones. Don’t borrow too much money to start with, don’t spend all your income on kit, and save for your taxes. Stay away from the alcohol and drugs. Coffee and sugar are bad enough! ;)
@thesoundcouple
@thesoundcouple 7 месяцев назад
We couldn't agree more with everything said so far. Starting out is hard but exciting...and honestly, we can make things look easy, but the truth is, some of it is not. I can think of times when I should have been fired, I have lost the gig, or I have made people very unhappy....and I have had people thankfully give me another chance. This is all part of learning. The most important thing is to be humble and learn from your mistakes and be motivated to do whatever is needed to make sure the next gig goes better....and the fact is, it may not. In our videos, we are in effect, showing you the end game which comes from our years of experience. We hope that our channel can help you learn by watching what we do and not do and perhaps accelerate your experience. If you have the the drive and skills, it doesn't take years but doing the best you can and being nice can go along ways. That's how we see this business working....your reputation and skill is key!

I've worked with the Barringer system and a little bit with the Avion system. It's nice but it puts all the control on the artist. I really like the hybrid approach because it still lets me jump in and see, here and adjust. Good point about setting it not to turn off forgot about that, that's a pretty good reason on its own.

@thesoundcouple
@thesoundcouple 4 месяца назад

I wouldn't mind a video of what gear you used to use. We dropped heavy amps (EV P2000 and P3000 with EV X(i) Array series 31:17 ) somewhere around 2003/2004 went all in on d&b D12s en Q-series with Max for monitors when needed. We were already using digital mixers by then. I quit somewhere 2010/2011 after just being fed up with it but we were still using the good old Par 56 and Par 64 back then, accompanied by the obligatory moving heads and more than adequate stage lights for front lighting.
@thesoundcouple
@thesoundcouple 7 месяцев назад
We have thought about it and do have some ideas so it's on the list of future videos. We still have some par 38's and 46's, but the rest of aluminum cans we literally gave them away, including dimmer packs....There was a lot of money invested in those!

Pros. Unlike the hacks I ran sound for. Showed up an hour early, getting in my way on stage, and making all sorts of ruckus, and they were the 3rd band up! Then had the gall to complain when technical difficulties arose, in part because of their interuption!

It happens...sometimes things just don't "click" and you get rattled. It can feel like all eyes are just waiting for you to screw something up...In some sad way, it could be a protection mechanism as they are looking for an excuse for their own fear or insecurity. We believe that type of energy can cause situations like yours to manifest.

Thanks Bart and Stacy! Question on the IEMs system... Are the iPhones connected to the 32r and controlling their own mixes? Can you add a little detail there? I think this is a great idea and time/back saver carrying in monitors. Also, this is my first seeing the Donner EM1. Pleasantly happy with them? Thanks again!!
@thesoundcouple
@thesoundcouple 7 месяцев назад
Yes, we provide the iPhones so they can control their mix. That is the nice feature of the PreSonus system is that you can assign the mixes with permissions so the musicians are only presented with their own mix. The Donner EM1's are working great. They do have a built in rechargeable battery, so you may or may not like that. Our experience with their batteries has been good so far with our DMX dongles so not worried about it. They have unfortunately, like a lot of things, have gone up in price, but still not a bad deal.

We run everything off of our PreSonus mixer. Combination of wireless/wired (PSM 300's/Donner EM1, or PreSonus HP2). We supply iPhones running Q-Mix so the musicians can control their mix. Default is mono mix or stereo by request. We are limited as to how many wireless stereo mixes we can provide. In total, we can provide 5 wireless mono mixes and a handful of wired mixes...we have never not had enough!

Yes! I just didn't that day because it fell on an even channel. However, the problem with linking is that you can't pan it then...not sure what to think about that....especially when that's what they want to do in the in-ears.

We will attempt a follow-up post with settings, etc. Keep an eye out for that! For live sound, we are all in digital...the sound quality is certainly up for debate, but considering all factors, digital allows us to do our job way better.
