The Sound Couple head out with Rhino to support a company "welcome back" party!
These types of gigs are awesome for many reasons! We generally feel very supported, they are short and they end on the early side. Oh yeah, and there tends to be good food and drinks that we are able to partake in! (and did we mention they pay well??)
Sit back and enjoy the sites and sounds of summer as the Sound Couple takes you through another fun and packed full of information gig!
The Sound Couple primarily use PreSonus gear featuring:
PreSonus UC Surface
PreSonus CDL12
PreSonus CDL18s
PreSonus 32R
PreSonus SW5E
PreSonus NSB Stageboxes
PreSonus AVB-D16
Please see our "About" for a more comprehensive list of gear we use.

I love the fact that you are always checking the power! Last summer we did a sound gig at a very exclusive private club and their 'turtle' was wired wrong! The neutral was HOT!! It fried one monitor and two power strips. Fortunately that was all that happened and no one was electrocuted - especially since it was an outdoor event! Hatz off to testing power and never assuming!

Our general rule is that if it's not an indoor outlet, we are testing it. That has actually saved us and I have heard first hand stories where the extension cord they ran for you was not what you were expecting.

As always, a giant “Thank You!” to Bart and Stacy for allowing us to watch professionals in action. Even a gig like this one that seems, on the surface, to be quite straightforward, has a number of significant learning opportunities: 1. Experience-years of experience -allows The Sound Couple to quickly assess the situation and make proper decisions as to exactly how much gear it will take to give the musicians the proper production support. This is evident in the choices Bart and Stacy made in selecting which speakers to use and how many to employ, along with the decisions of how much lighting is needed to enhance the band, give color to the performance, and yet recognize that this was a daylight gig. 2. The ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and solve a problem, in the midst of the corporate audience gathering and participating in other parts of their program. While we’ve seen Bart use the wireless headphones in some previous videos, this particular video really emphasized how important it is to have the ability to “silently” troubleshoot and solve a problem. This becomes very important when other so-called “normal” troubleshooting procedures might have become a distraction to the employees of this corporate gathering, interrupting the other important parts of the event. 3. This video, once again, displays The Sound Couple’s finesse in handling relationships. The interaction between both Stacy and Bart with the representative of the client illustrates the value of maintaining a collegial attitude. Then, the fact that The Sound Couple has worked with the musicians in Rhino-the-Band so many times over the recent years creates a sense of oneness in their joint delivery of a performance that helps the client determine that choosing this band and this production company was the right decision to make. It will likely result in repeat business in the future for both the band and The Sound Couple. 4. The luxury of time to setup the stage boxes to allow the signal from the Worx software to piggyback on the AVB signal from the 32R, giving Burt the ability to look at each speaker and tweak each one was a nice touch in this video. Again, thanks to Bart and Stacy for allowing us to observe and learn from their willingness to let us see behind-the-scenes in greater detail than other production companies whose videos are posted on RU-vid. That is certainly a hallmark and a significant advantage to this RU-vid channel. Even when Bart and Stacy may feel that we’ve seen it all before, there is always something to learn from observing them during the setup and takedown, as well as watching how Bart mixes the musicians and Stacy controls the lighting.

Thanks Dean! Your comments always mean so much, giving insight to others, and to us as well. It is nice to know that there is always something to learn - no matter how mundane or groundhogs day a gig feels! I like the way you organized. Thanks for sharing. I use Dewalt 63 gal tool box. I attached custom dolly with 3in casters to the box. I divided into 60:40 sections. One section for fragile XLR cables. Other section for heavy power cables. Box is very light and rugged, but heavy once loaded. I have a harbor freight aluminum ramp to load unload from the van. works well for a one-man team like me. Bonus benefit - At gigs, I put a cover on the box and use as a table for my x32 console.

There are pros/cons of both, and in one of our recent videos, I realized through the comments, that a console would have been a better choice for our familiar church gig. I ran sound for a church gig in the park, had to stay "quiet enough for the neighbors". I asked for concrete dB levels from the city (Brainerd), and would not/could not give them! With the meter app, at least I had visual proof of levels. No neighbor complaints, and event attendees were satisfied, so it all washed out in the end!
@thesoundcouple
@thesoundcouple Год назад
Not surprising, right? Mostly everyone is simply trying to cover their ass...if no one complains, they won't bother you. If there are complaints, that person can say..."well I told them it can't be too loud!" and transfer the blame onto you even though you never got a real answer.
@MrSamsstudios
@MrSamsstudios Год назад
first off, much love to anyone putting anything on youtube trying to help the masses. OK. I do many of these types of events with similar sized PA's. When it comes out of the van it immediately goes on a cart (if heavy, NO DEADLIFTING SPEAKERS off the ground) or it goes to where it'll be living for the day. 2nd: pull the mini PA that was setup near stage, you're going to be fighting it all afternoon and honestly talk to the client and not use it at all. 3rd: lighting, setup it up on the dance floor, too many cables being run downstage and you''ll spend half your time navigating tripod legs. Anyway, odd gig when there's music and people eating but thats what the client wanted. Nice vid
@thesoundcouple
@thesoundcouple Год назад
Agreed on the loading part - that is typically the case, but in some instances such as this one, it depended on the distance we had to go - sometimes it's hard to justify carting everything, when it is just as quick to hand carry. (Trust me, Bart and I debate about this all the time...somehow he seems to win that debate a lot!)

No end of video extra scenes! Another great gig ... it was hard to tell, but do you ever worry you've got the volume of the band a bit too high for a particular gig? I'm thinking that if everyone was in the same tent for a wedding or something, then there's a particular dB you'd want but that in an event like this one, whether you go a little lower worrying that too loud will push people away from the music tent? And, since I'm trying to learn from your example, what was wrong with the drum overheads? Just so that I can add it to my troubleshooting arsenal :) Thanks again, and it's wonderful that you reply to all of the comments on your videos, much appreciated.
@thesoundcouple
@thesoundcouple Год назад
Thanks for watching to the end! Getting the volume right is always tough with so many variables that can be out of your control. With this band, we can be more in control (just drums from stage) and they trust us to make the right call, but sometimes it still isn't right. For this gig, the main objective was to get over the drums and see where it went from there. Contrast to the next video we are working on, a lady came up and was really rude in expressing her displeasure of "how loud" it was. In conjunction with the type of gig, I will read the space and if I am at the point there is nothing more I can do and I feel it's too loud, the band needs to turn down. Regarding the overhead, the ART splitter (from the monitor rack) has an iso out and a direct out (on the front). The mic requires phantom power that can only work with direct outputs that the band supplies from their monitor console. The direct out's on the spitters are on the front along with all of the other channels the plug in for inputs. It's easy to accidentally pull the XLR cables out (from previous gig) if you are not paying attention since this one direct output is right next to the inputs. Since then, I have gone through their monitor system and placed a piece of tape around the cables that are direct out for phantom power to at least offer some resistance if someone tries to unplug them.

Nice video. Did you do any adjustments to your EQ or anything about the tent acoustics that you mentioned in the beginning?
@thesoundcouple
@thesoundcouple Год назад
The only stage volume is from the drums which makes this situation much easier to manage. I will typically take the snare out of the mix and back off on all of the FX. Sometimes mid and high frequencies can pop out, which creates wonderful tent "boxy" sound. Cutting any frequency between 250-800Hz would not be unusual. Thankfully no bass amp rumbling on stage to help muddy the FOH mix!

The headphones are Sennheiser RS 195's. They work great when in line of site and they sound good too. I have used these for years, but just recently put a Shure PSM 300 in our rack mixer to use for monitoring. In future videos, you will see these, but primarily, I wanted more range and also for protecting our ears more in loud environments and still be able to hear the mix....basically mixing with IEM's. The RS 195's will still be used when using the console for sure.

Hi Bart, your videos have peaked my interest with the PreSonus CDL12 or CDL 12P. The closest boxes I have to this are the Yorkville Paraline series psa2s. The price of these CDL 12s is very attractive and they seem easy to manage. My only question is with the overall volume, unlike the US and Canada, I am from Trinidad in the Caribbean and we like "loud" sound. I am 62 years old so not a young crazy person but I do understand our market. So how loud are these units compared to I guess a Single 15" & horn monitor. I also used RCF, Yorkville, Bose and EV speakers. Enjoying your videos and intrestingly enough the band's repertoire is quite a good mixture of music!
@thesoundcouple
@thesoundcouple Год назад
Hi Rene..just my opinion, but the CDL's excel in their clarity and smooth mids/highs. It's not just marketing when they state how well they do at getting the vocals over the mix and the coverage is outstanding for how big the boxes are. However, because of how they are designed, I don't think they can compete with a horn loaded speaker in the same class in sheer volume. A horn loaded cabinet can get louder and perhaps even throw further. I believe our 328's are a louder cabinet, but as good as they sound, the CDL's are better. If you are a slamming DJ, these are probably not the best choice for you.

There's one thing I hate about having dual systems, other than unneeded extra complexity and redundancy. That's if anything goes wrong with the other system you're the sound person with a big target on your back and an arrow above your head so you're responsible for it... why is their feedback no it's not my fault but you're all looking at me anyway I have no control over it. Which is why I usually don't mind taking over other systems as long as they're reasonably decent. Or just running everything on my system as I'm most likely gonna be there for most of the time anyway. Did this one thing it was I think a 25 x 75' pavilion that was enclosed. We had a bunch of guest musicians going through that day and there was one teenage rock band… Guitars + amps I literally turned off the House system and unplugged it and cable managed while they played and I believe I had people complaining about how loud it was and I'm like here's the plug not me. Edit: More recently I did a talent show at my local movie theater, old movie theater. The last group was going to bring in a drum set over intermission and their own system for the last 2 acts. They also had one act sort of in the middle of the second session. No they were not ready they did not do a previous Soundcheck so when they first went up they had no sound and then feedback. But yeah you can drop one of those knock off Bose tower speakers on the stage corner and cover a 75 Seat theater. I had open channels all they needed to do was give me a feed. They also had a monitor which didn't get mixed properly as I wasn't receiving any signal from my privateered connection, I was also recording video which kinda needs audio with it..... I can't wait to edit it and find out how it turned out.

Hey Bart, if you had to replace your system and being that the CDL's have been replaced with the CDLP's. Would you still go with the CDLP's or would you go a different route?
@thesoundcouple
@thesoundcouple Год назад
Ohhhhhh, that's a good question. OK, I don't have any experience with the P's, so this is my biased opinion FWIW. First, I don't have anything against plastic speakers, but for me, a plastic cabinet cannot be my primary cabinet...sorry, can't do it. Second, I want a manufacture'r to offer me a solution, not part of one. The decision to not only discontinue the original series but then not offer a campion sub with what they are continuing with is an incomplete solution. So, as much as I like our cabinets and we have no plans on changing anytime soon, if we were looking now, we would be looking elsewhere. The original CDL's are still listed as a current offering and there is some uncertainty if they are really discontinued, but from my credible sources, they are. If they are, they should move them to the discontinued product section...so is there still hope?

Especially for events like this, we will always try to understand how the power will be provided to us prior to our arrival so we can confirm that we have what we need. We will use extension cords to go into wall outlets or bring our power tap if that is what will accommodate our needs. 10:30 I thought, it would be risky to install the stand this way?

It's not possible to remove all risks, but generally clustering them close and avoiding legs from sticking out works well. The small speakers on stands were not ours.

@@thesoundcouple thank!!👍👍 good job as usual!! And thank you for recommending the table. We ended up purchasing three. All locked together are better than a standard table.

6:25 I hate it when people that have nothing to do come over and start talking when they see you are busy and hard at work.
