Dive into the scandalous life and tumultuous marriage of Lady Edwina Mountbatten, born Edwina Ashley, who navigated the stormy seas of British high society with grace and defiance. From her birth into immense wealth and privilege to her restless search for purpose amidst glittering parties and secret lovers, Edwina's story is one of stark contrasts: opulence and despair, fidelity and betrayal, love and loss. Marrying Louis Mountbatten, a member of the British royal family, only amplified the drama, as their open secret of infidelities and passionate liaisons scandalized society and enraged both King George and Winston Churchill.
Discover the depths of Edwina's personal life, including her legendary affair with Jawaharlal Nehru, the Prime Minister of India, during the historic partition of India. Learn about her close connections with prominent figures like Gloria Vanderbilt, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, and Wallis Simpson. Witness how Edwina found moments of profound meaning and courage during the turbulent years of World War II and her daring humanitarian efforts.
Explore her legendary affairs with notable figures like Leslie Hutchinson and Bunny Phillips, and the enduring bond with her husband, Louis, despite their separate pursuits. Packed with expert interviews, archival footage, and stunning visuals, this documentary offers an in-depth look at Edwina’s extraordinary journey. Join us as we uncover the layers of her life, from the glittering halls of Mayfair to the turmoil of partitioned India, and the legacy she left behind.

The elder daughter, Patricia, inherited the earldom after the assassination of her father. She married another peer, Baron Brabourne and together they had 8 children. She died in 2017, aged 93. The younger daughter, Pamela, married a designer and decorator, David Hicks. They had 3 children. Lady Pamela Hicks is still alive, aged 95.

Money cannot replace the first four years of love from a mother and father. A nanny may or may not love you, may, or may not even be kind to you. But during the first four years of a child’s life, if they are given a good foundation of love from a mother and father, makes all the difference in emotional health later in life. She was lucky to be wealthy, no telling where her broken emotions might have taken her if she were poor.

Edwina's childhood was pretty "normal" for an aristocratic, or royal family. Parents weren't "hands on" & rarely spent much time with their children at all (unless for "photo opportunities"). The children were brought up by nannies & tutored at home, or shuffled off to private, boarding schools. The children themselves then went on & repeated their own parents lack of hands on parenting skills. Aristocratic & royal couples often entered "arranged marriages" with others of like "class". Once the "heir & a spare" was produced, both partners were free to have "discreet" affairs. Often these men would enter an affair with a married woman. As this was considered "wise" if a woman "fell pregnant". If the married, or unmarried woman did have a child, said men would honour their (acceptable) bastards, by becoming their Godfathers. Lois Mountbatten was gay. It was such an "arranged marriage" as afore mentioned. More recently, the Queen's children: 1st born: Charles: Married, commited adultery, 2 sons, divorced, remarriage with his former mistress, Camilla. NOTE: Camilla was his (married) long term mistress before (inclusive of the night before his marriage to Diana), during & after his marriage to Diana. For aristocratic men, having their wife "rogered", by a royal prince, that would one day become a king was actually quite an accolade. 2nd born: Anne: Married, Son & a daughter, commited adultary, divorced, remarried 3rd born: Andrew: Married, 2 daughters, cuckolded, divorced, his wife still resides with him 4th born: Edward: Gay, arranged marriage, son & daughter 😳

If anything good came out of the Diana debacle the British royal family has been forced to get into the same century as their subjects, especially towards their attitude toward female members. A sad example was princess Margaret, an intelligent and talented woman who simply had her personal life ruined because her last name happened to be Windsor. I’m glad Edwina was able to accomplish some of her goals

They were a wise couple knowing together publicly made them stronger&making a pact to discretely find solace where they found it&they even helped each other do it! That's much better than the ugly,vicious,cruelty that comes out in divorce where in power malicious discrediting of other to get the most destroys so much,even life itself. Bravo for their mutual respect for each other based on deep friendship over weak love,that would've made all miserable,as seen by what Princess Diana was put through&she was the favorite royal! The Queen&Charles &Prince Philip should've been wise enough to suggest this type of situation to satisfy their public, while still giving Diana the chance for happiness Charles opted to find too openly elsewhere. She was too smart&knew her own worth to tolerate being the submissive little miss they thought he married. She was made of Character&Unique qualities foreign to the royals,but loved by the people! They really played that all wrong with the Princess who got tired of being Neglected&forced to look happy when together. She shone on her own&could've helped royal family for many years if they'd just realized they had to compromise to do the best for the boys who were 2nd&3rd in line for throne. They both would've benefited not having to choose sides as would've Great Britain!

She was a horrible mother. Neglected her daughters and when her husband tried to take care of them, she showed insane jealousy, suspected incest from bogh sides and didn't let them meet. The daughter talks about in her book how much she loved him and his bedtime stories but her mother put an end to them. Edwina had innumerable lovers of her own but created trouble if her husband tried to have one of his own. Pathetic woman only redeemed by her charity .

I think she just lived her life on her own terms. Egocentric, selfish, hedonistic, a pure product of her time, class and wealth which allowed her all the caprices she wanted! Did she love Nehru ? Yes !! Did they have a physical relationship?? Don't know. Montbatten married her money, knowing he would have to look away. She did too. Some couples work like that. Look at V Sackville West and H Nicolson.

I always thought that Mountbatten was trying to undermine Queen Elizabeth and trying to take power from her. He wanted to be king.
@MythicMindScape21

The Queen mother also thought that, she did not like how quickly Louis went from being great friends to the Edward the VIII to trying to get close to her husband as well as him being instrumental in the marriage of Phillip to Elizabeth. He was also very close to Charles; had Mountbatten not died it is very likely Charles would have married Mountbatten's granddaughter. Although Diana had known Charles since she was a child, it was at Mountbatten's funeral where she made a remark that sparked their future romance. At Lord Mountbatten's funeral, Lady Diana Spencer reportedly said to Prince Charles, "You looked so sad when you walked up the aisle at Lord Mountbatten's funeral. It was the most tragic thing I've ever seen. My heart bled for you when I watched. I thought, 'It’s wrong, you’re lonely-you should be with somebody to look after you.'

I really enjoyed this video. She was really quite an accomplished woman and past info I read of her only focused on her affairs. For a woman, at this time in history, it’s fascinating that within the confines of her status she was always searching for purpose and true love. She was way ahead of her time in that she lived her life as she wanted. It reinforces my thought that a woman should always be the mistress of her own destiny! I’ve subscribed and look forward to other videos.

And what about the “scandalous life” of Dicki Mountbatten?
@MythicMindScape21
@MythicMindScape21 6 дней назад
Sure, I touched on it. But the focus of the video is her, and scandalous is more about how society viewed her, rather than actual scandal. My focus however on this channel at least for now is more on the lesser known stories, and Dicke's story is rather more well known.

Seems like the temptest was returned to the sea. Mountbatten would have made that choice, not looking at her grave, nor former lovers. Sad her early years didn't teach trust, purpose or love.

Somewhere during this whitewashing video, leading a privileged, scandalous, and self-absorbed life became bravely, "living life on her own terms." It continues to amaze me how much people, who wouldn't even noticed otherwise, are revered by the world for merely being born.
@MythicMindScape21
@MythicMindScape21 16 часов назад
Please explain what whitewashing means? Telling a person's story is not the same as reverence. I allow the viewer to make their own decisions on the morality or lack there of regarding the people in the video. I believe viewers such as yourself are intelligent enough to formulate your own opinion without me giving mine in the video. I mentioned all things in relation to her, and all things in relation to Mountbatten. However it is not my job to tell people how to think, nor to pass judgement on the individuals in the video. There are many other channels that will happily do that, or people in the comments who can, much like yourself. That is what healthy debate is. But it should not be a part of the video.
