But what is "overeating"? Michael Phelps consumed 10,000 calories A DAY when he was training and I would pretty much guarantee no one thinks he's overweight. But if Michael Phelps was some office worker who consumed that many calories a day, he'd be morbidly obese. So what it's all about is how you utilize(or not utilize) the calories you take in.

I want to add something that doesn't get talked about enough, and that's the importance of a healthy gut microbiome. There's some very recent research which suggests that a healthy gut microbiome and how efficiently you lose weight is strongly related. Makes sense why some people can eat everything and not gain a pound! So be sure to look after your gut health. You can do this by taking a high quality weight loss probiotic. (Just make sure it contains only the research-backed ingredients) - Fermented foods are good too such as kimchi, tempeh, kombucha etc.

This video is not against exercise, but it contributes to a culture that is so obsessed with weight that exercise is essentially dismissed in this video without qualification. The reason we care so much about an obese population is because of the comorbidities that are associated with obesity - heart problems, diabetes, depression, fatigue, etc. Exercise is effective in reducing all of those risk factors independently of weight loss, and should be heavily pushed and associated with a long life and better health. Not all obese people are at the same level of health; some are functionally the same or better that their "thin" counterparts. I really disagree with how Vox communicated this because it could cause more harm than good.

The real secret comes down to your diet; how many calories are you consuming vs how many you’re burning. I never really payed attention to what I ate before, but I started weighing out portions and counting calories, and it works. It really does work. The key is discipline and consistency. I started off by finding a calorie intake calculator on google and calculated how many calories I should intake to lose ‘x’ amount of weight per week. Then you stick to it. But your mindset is important too, you’re not starving yourself or depriving yourself from enjoying food, sometimes I go 2-3 days in a row over my caloric ‘ceiling’ but the key is to stay consistent, while also making sure to enjoy the foods you eat

The video isn't saying not to exercise. It's saying that based on whatever studies they cite, those studies found that exercising alone does not necessarily lead to results. It is true that losing weight is as simple as calories in < calories out, and exercising increases calories out; however, human behaviour takes a toll. People tend to justify eating more, or eating worse, because they exercised. In this case, while they're increasing calories out, they're also increasing calories in. They're not saying it's impossible to lose weight by just exercising, only that it's a lot harder and requires a lot more focus and self control than most people have. Changing the way we eat and our approach to food is, in the opinion of the studies this video cites, a more sustainable and effective way to lose weight. At the end of the day, everyone needs to find what works for them.

Azoui That‘s an awful way of losing weight. With a calorie deficite that high you 1) lose not just fat but also muscle mass, 2) slow your metabolism down so much that losing weight and especially gaining muscle will become harder and 3) will probably have a rebound effect some time and overeat because you cannot sustain your diet. You have to do a much more conservative calorie deficite like -20% if you want to lose weight and do a sustainable body recomposition.

Sport is just a way to increase your TDEE so it's easier to lose weight without dieting so hard. What's important isnt the calories burned by the exercice, it's the calories burned by your new body once it has adapted to the training. For example some (natural) bodybuilders have a resting metabolic rate of more than 3k calories a day. this way you cant eat satisfying meals and still be in a deficit

So they tried to make something that has been very obvious for years now as some sort of recent scientific breakthrough? Yes, exercise plays a smaller role in terms of calorie expenditure compared to nutrition, but the offset is not as insignificant as they make it sound. The problem is the *type* of exercise, such as low-intensity cardio, that is perpetuated to be effective for calorie expenditure when in fact it's not all that great. Anyway, I research a lot and make fitness and health videos. Stuff like this irks me from time to time.

Unfortunately you're wrong. first it wasn't "obvious". Even people in the industry (yourself included) don't seem to understand the basic concepts. Secondly the impact of exercise whether aerobic or weights etc is OVER stated no matter how you slice it. Increasing muscle mass has negligible sometimes nonexistent to effect on your resting metabolic rate. Its only real affect is in recovery metabolic rate which is again has negligible long term effects for most people outside of gym rats. Your livelyhood depends on people believing exercise = weight loss I understand the confirmation bias.

Agree, I think the calorie RDA's the governments recommend are way too high for ordinary people. 2400 for a man my age, that's a joke, anything over 2k and I start gaining weight. 1600 is the same figure I used during weight loss(I was already at 15% BF, but wanted to go down to 12). I was told my whole life that exercising is the best way to lose weight, etc. While exercise is important in building muscle, improving mental health, among many other things. Dietary habits is a super overlooked part of it. I started just counting calories about 4 months ago. I went from eating and drinking whatever I wanted to a daily goal of 1500 calories. In that time, I’ve lost more than 20 pounds. It’s important to note that I was overweight so you’re current weight (compared to your target weight) will depend on your body’s ‘natural’ comfortable weight. So it might be faster, or slower for some. While 1500 calories sounds like not a lot, it’s not as hard as people think, all it really takes is for you to WANT to do it. I still eat pretty much whatever I want, but I just control my portions. Obviously some days I go over my goal, but long term consistency is key

The point of the video is that you shouldn't be surprised if you don't lose weight with exercise if you continue to eat too much (especially fast food), not that exercise is bad or useless despite what the video said, it was just to get your attention. A healthy diet is necessary for success, and I don't mean those fad diets. I mean changing the way you eat for good. If it's something that only lasts a few months the chances are your weight will come back.

Ndeera Mirweniel Actually, I've lost weight without having having to lessen how much I eat. In the beginning I changed the kinds of foods I was eating. Then money got right. So, the only thing I changed was increasing the amount of exercise. I went months eating all kinds of junk food, but I was doing a lot of walking and my weight never went up or down. When I stop exercising and continue to eat a lot, my weight goes up. So, for me I've found that the key is staying active. I like long walks anyway so it's not difficult for me to get out. However, I would like to get back to weight lifting. Maybe for me my eating isn't as bad as others. But as far I am concerned, I get hungry pretty much 6 times a day and can eat a full meal each time. But with exercise, my weight stays where it is. If I want to lose weight, increase the amount of exercise and my weight goes down. I think this issue may differ for some people based on their bodies.

This video is kind of biased. It talks about cardiovascular exercises like Jogging, and Cycling. What they do is burn calories directly. But what they missed out was looking at High Intensity exercises like Sprinting and Lifting weights. Lifting weights builds muscle mass in your body. And this in turn increases the work your body has to put into "utilizing the muscles" and thus, increases your Resting Metabolism which happens to also be the number 1 factor in affecting the calories you burn. Not to discredit the video but they were absolutely right in saying that diet ultimately is the main issue but they shouldn't say that exercising is ineffective.
@MsHojat
@MsHojat 6 лет назад
It's still a lot more work to do weight training (and frequently not easily accessible for overweight people either. Sure there are equipment-less weight excercises, but not as many of them are viable for overweight people) than to eat a cupcake or drink a glass of juice. It's maybe the most effective excercise, but I'd still say it's not enough to beat simply not eating. Excercise is also difficult to sustain. If someone loses _any_ weight due to excercise, it means they would need to sustain that excercise for the remainder of their life in order to maintain their weight (assuming that they don't change their diet).

muscles are more dense as well. They are about 15% more dense. Repairing the muscle tissue (building muscle) burns as much calories as the exercise itself and can be counted as idle caloric burning. but is in fact exercise burning. muscles look good, fat not so much. (this isn't a joke) it means that staying the same in weight but turning it to muscle will make you look thinner (due to my first point) but despite that you *will* look better even if you gain that extra 15% in fat.

Yeah, the info they share is not against exercise, but against only relying on it. They phrase it and pack it click-baitely, though. I am a procrastinator, a depressive being with no conscientiousness and high neuroticism, but recently something clicked while managing that aspect of my life. I don’t exercise, but lost 12 pounds in two months of eating like a human. I’ll lose 27 pounds by November 21 if I stay eating healthy, according to my projections. I eat a lot of protein to stimulate muscle growth and would like to exercise eventually (just a little). Exercising is much more than a tool to lose weight, it makes you healthy, I know, but for my sickly and painful complexion could not be the main recourse to slim down.

ScarlettShinzon I did, but I can only agree partly. There some points that I think are wrong, for example that people of the african tribe that was mentioned burn the same amount of calories as adults in the US and Europe. I'm pretty sure that they don't burn more, because they eat less. If the body would get more food, they would get bigger muscles and burn more. So the causal chain is vice versa.
@maximeansell7372
@maximeansell7372 5 лет назад
They also completely miss out the point that exercises can increase muscle mass which can significantly increase your metabolic rate. Also the amount of energy required to recover muscles after exercise is huge (often referred to as the after burn effect). It’s isn’t true to say that our Basal metabolic rate is completely outside our control. Our control of it is limited by genetics true but we can take steps to increase our metabolism. One of the best ways to do that is exercise. I don’t know why they neglected to mention that.

I lost 6 stone in 3 months. I did this by simply starting an exercise program that I kept up. I got with my partner and I stopped exercising. I've gained weight since I stopped. Of course dietary restrictions should also happen but exercise is a really good way to lose weight. A good example is in the English military. You eat as much food as you can. Chips, beans, high calorie foods of all sorts. People in the military don't tend to get overweight because of how much exercise they are getting. I dont agree with this science, from personal experience. Maybe someone can educate me differently about this.

@wow1371 2 года назад
You answered it yourself. This video is saying that high impact exercise doesn't work if you end up losing energy and compensating by cutting off other stuff. A person in military is taking in per your statement high amount of calories and a lot of high impact exercise. Hence they are constantly burning that compensation.
@evanhsieh

As A Runner I Can Get Away With Eating A Lot Of Food But When I Do That I Never Lose Weight I Only Maintain It sorry for capitalizing all the letters. Also the science is correct because the people in the military are *eating right* they are getting the proper amount of food for the proper amount of exercise. What is different with people who gain weight is that they eat more than their daily expenditure. The people who *lose* weight are the people who eat less than their daily expenditure. The science and this video is trying to emphasize *daily expenditure* that is the whole point of the video.

This video obscures two crucial points about health and exercise: 1) Your basal metabolic rate is under your control, and anaerobic exercise is how you control it. This video talks about exercise as if aerobic exercise were the only kind that counted. Anaerobic exercise (e.g. weight lifting, rock climbing, etc.) will add muscle, which will raise your resting calorie consumption. 2) Weight is not the primary health risk. Body fat percentage is the primary health risk. Weight is easier and more satisfying to measure. But the fast ways of losing weight all cause muscle loss, which will sabotage your basal metabolic rate. See point 1.

Good points! Weight loss tends to be the obsession in the US at least, when physical conditioning is far more important. I maintain that you can't be truly physically fit and be at the "wrong" weight. But physical fitness is much harder to put an easily measured number on.

Even though diet is the most important part of losing weight how the hell can you call exercise "useless"? Think about it. If you eat 2000 kcal a day and go cycling for about 1 hour a day at a modest pace you can burn anywhere from 400 to 500 kcal. That's *highly* significant if you really think about it. If you do that every day and keep your diet the same it adds up. It basically reduces your daily caloric intake by 25%. That's still very significant in the long run. There aint' no magical weight loss pill that could ever do this. It's weird how they say that you "only" have control of about 30% of the calories you burn per day. How is that "only"? 30% is a big chuck and very useful to take advantage of as opposed to starving yourself. Not to mention the metabolic boost you get and the fact that you are healthier and therefore your body is going to be more efficient at burning fat.

Because you're assuming that all the other psychological things like compensatory eating, or making choices like not taking the stairs because you exercised in the morning, don't exist. Not to mention that as one loses weight, as the video said, your metabolism can actually slow down. The body fights to maintain weight once it has been gained and has become the new "normal". Perfect calorie counting isn't easy or always accurate, either.
@asyncasync
@asyncasync 8 лет назад
Daniel O that's not a valid argument since you're still in control of what you do the rest of the day so if you choose to be lazy after working out then you only have yourself to blame. You'd really have to be messing up big time if you somehow compensate for the whole 500 kcal every day though. Sure some people might eat more, which is a problem, but small things like "not taking the stairs" are not going to compensate for the whole 500 kcal unless you really go out of your way to try and sleep for the rest of the day. I for one don't even experience this.

So basically in India/Asian countries, where caloric intake(especially junk food calories) is lower and people use more public transportation, they have a built in system that keeps most of the population from becoming overweight - it's called walking. Because Americans put so much emphasis on driving everywhere for every daily need, going to the gym is completely undermined by the automobile society. We literally not only eat too much but we sit too much driving down our resting metabolism(the yellow part in the graph). Good urban design can not only save us from a life of diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and pollution, it can lower national healthcare costs by the billions by making walking and biking normal again. Cars are great for long trips and vacation but living in a culture where I must drive everywhere and sit all the time is a disaster for our health. (See also Jeff Speck, Howard Kunstler, and any European city built before automobiles)

Leave off the processed, concentrated, empty and high calorie foods. After awhile, the body begins to crave the healthier food. jo klip [She was even disdainful of the idea that exercise is an important part of weight loss.] I think rightly so. Eat less, move more doesn't work as shown in the Biggest Loser study. Exercise is great for fitness and more muscle mass will raise your BMR. But the secret is proper nutrition. I would go so far as to say that someone wanting to lose weight (especially obese people) should probably NOT start on an exercise binge.
@joklip7928
@joklip7928 8 лет назад
danL1011 for one im laughing inside that you cited the biggest loser , who encouraged participants to ride a stationary bike in a sauna and to dehydrate themselves before weigh ins as your scientific evidence. Secondly, you will NEVER get fit if you dont exercise, any fit person will tell you this. An obese person most likely has a dirt slow metabolism and very little muscle mass, unless they were once in some sort of shape. So increasing muscle mass through exercise will increase the BMR, which will burn more calories daily, which you NEED to be healthy, especially if you are obese.

Right! I don't see why that's so hard for people here to grasp. Watching people from The Biggest Loser, and all these other workout-till-you-drop shows, regain their weight basically proved that. The best thing you can do to lose weight is eat clean and strength train to build muscle and tone. Research has been showing that for years. I used to be a cardio-head, which helped with heart health and endurance, but since it was weight loss I was after, I can't help but wish I had some of that time back.

***** it's even worse when people advise to start dieting but then tell them to hardly eat at all. You cannot simply drastically change your diet and expect change fast. Your body needs to adapt to the diet. It would be easier if you go into a diet slowly. Many people experience what is called yo-yoing. Going on a diet too fast and going off too fast and all their weight comes back.

Lol, severe mental health problems are not going to be fixed by exercise. If you have a little bit of anxiety or depression it might help a little, but people with severe disorders rarely would see symptoms go down based on a change in your exercise routine. It's not particularly helpful to most people to tout things like exercise as a way to fix mental health problems. It can sometimes manage symptoms, but it's like putting a bandaid on a bulletwound for most people. I have OCD and I do enjoy biking and swimming, but it hasn't changed any of my symptoms.
@sinfulmoose
@sinfulmoose 8 лет назад
1. Didn't say exercise alone could fix them- I'm on medication and encourage everyone to try meds/therapy as a first and main option if offered 2. Referred to most common mental health issues which are anxiety and combined depression+anxiety- also stands to reason that mild-moderate forms are more common than severe, and prevention would address developing mild depression before it has become severe, but even so 3. Said 'can be', not 'will be' 4. Have been housebound on and off for years, unable to work for years, only eating one meal a day for months at a time, (which makes me cringe to think now) have had suicidal ideation and planning most of my adult life and have had dissociate seizures. Exercise was and is hugely helpful for me in managing my symptoms and is for many others with severe cases- though, especially with depression, I know that without other help exercise is near or completely impossible.
@NotTotallyHopeless
@NotTotallyHopeless 8 лет назад
petalbreeze I'm sorry if I seem skeptical but I have never met anyone who uses exercise as even one of their primary ways to manage severe mental health symptoms. In fact most people, including myself sometimes, don't exercise during breakout symptom periods because if you have OCD or an eating disorder or something it can make you feel much much worse. I just don't like these kinds of comments because they live in the same realm as those articles you read about the woman who did yoga for 6 months and cured her depression. If we all started jogging we are not all going to be fixed

Come on this video is filled with bad conclusions. If you have more muscle tissue you have a higher basal metabolism, and you get that by... exercising. When you exercise with high intense you can lose up to 20kcal per minute. So if you exercise for an hour 3 days a week and maintain the exact diet, you will lose fat. They say that you will not lose weight because you will be hungrier. If you want to lose weight you will need to correct your diet, so obviously it's not just the exercise. Bottom line, exercises do help you lose weight if you're actually into it and have enough discipline to correct the way you eat.

20k calories a minute? Did you have a stroke there pal? You do realize that the "healthy" caloric intake is less than 5,000 right? According to what you gave, spending anything more than a couple minutes doing the workout and you'll die from lack of energy. Granted, yes you will lose fat, but you will also lose muscle, and just about every cell storing energy in your body, which is every cell. Anyways, they did not say that losing weight will make you hungrier. They said that people who lose weight are more likely to eat something that can reset their progress. Note there the words *more* *likely*, and not will. Also, bottom line, exercises do help you lose weight, *but*, and that is a HUGE but, only works if you intake less calories than you burn through exercise. Basically, saying only eat vegetables, which have amongst the smallest amount of calories in them. Which is far from healthy, and, for the average joe, just about impossible.

The truth is those strongmen and linemen really don't have that much muscle since they train for strength and not size. Compare the bodies of Olympic weightlifters with those of bodybuilders. Weightlifters and linemen train for power which keeps their reps low, resulting in lots of strength due to nervous system adaptation, but not much muscle growth since the muscles aren't taxed. Bodybuilders train specifically for muscle growth which keeps their reps in a moderate range, resulting in those muscles recruiting more fibers to the region to deal with the added stress of additional reps.

@fleecejohnson5259
@fleecejohnson5259 6 лет назад
killaxmatt He makes a point. There are veggies and fruits that are more expensive (depending where you live at). For example, I live in the south (currently) and good veggies and fruits (that doesn't have artificial stuff in it nor have corn syrup) are hella expensive. Most ppl don't have money like that, also depending on the individual's ability on where to get their produce, it can be a real struggle. So next time when you think that it's easy to get veggies/fruits, you have to rationalize and think about how others would be affected by it. Not only price wise, but also availability wise.

Here's the deal: if you eat at maintenance calories, exercise can help you achieve caloric deficit. However, if you're at a surplus you need more exercise to achieve caloric deficit. But there's only so much exercise you can do. So help your body achieve deficit by limiting the calories that you consume.

GloomGaiGar diet is 70-80% important. no doubt. exercise still makes a significant contribution to weight loss. if you weight train with a bit of interval training cardio...you build muscle which in itself boosts your metabolism...i have lost weight via exercise and small adjustments to my diet...the thing is you need to do both weights and cardio..
@georgeh4944

dude you just like slapped yourself in the face. if diet is 80% and exercise is 20% then diet is more important to exercise in weight loss. that is the entire message of this video. it never said don't exercise it just said having a balanced diet is more important.

***** it downplays exercise too much..exercise is important, diet is most important..but both are important..it is resistance and cardio both combined that gives you athlticism, strength and a wicked physique, on the condition your diet is decent...and you get adequate rest..

what you said it is very true in real life, but from a scientific stand point dieting take "less" effort than exercising. remember they are talking about weight lost not having good physique. they are just addressing the common misconception that exercising absent of food management will lead to dramatic weight loss. ofc a combination of diet and exercise is the best, but if i only have one choice, i would choose diet for weight loss.

I lost 25 pounds in 8 months by #1 exercising 3 days out of the week for 30 to 40 min #2 intermittent fasting (16 hrs of not eating) I only eat from noon to 7pm #3 No beer, alcohol, processed sugar, bread, pasta & dairy (ate more salads) #4 replaced one of my meals (at times both) with a protein shake of veggies & fruits #5 drank lots of water, from 64 to 127 ounces (3 to 3.75 litters) #6 the most important part, dedication, hard work and determination!

What you are describing, although admirable, is not really sustainable. Most people will slide back into eating dairy, bread, and pasta again. Over weight people are usually on a junk food diet. When they start eating a lot of vegetables and raw fruit they are amazed that the weight just starts dropping of, and without ever going hungry. They start to feel better and look better very quickly. Soon, it becomes a healthy lifestyle, not a diet.

Very true. The mindset of exercising to eat more not only doesn't work but promotes a toxic exercise culture with the need to "earn the calories" for what you eat. And even if someone did figure out a way to exercise so they could eat more of what they wanted, they would need to keep up the routine for their bodies to keep burning the calories or they would easily start to gain weight.

@CobaltTheCrusader
@CobaltTheCrusader 8 лет назад
I can't believe I have to explain this...but okay, here it goes. If you get a gym membership and workout for, let's be generous and say 1 hour per day and it's high intensity interval training. You really break several sweats during your exercise and you're beat to hell after you get out of the gym. Of COURSE resting metabolism is still going to be the major calorie burner in your day! You just spent 1 hour out of 24 in the gym and you probably did nothing else that day! 1/24 translates to 4.17%. Now do me a favor, go and put, and let's round up for fun, 5% of your maximum effort into something. How fast is it going to get done? How well is it going to be when you're done? Or if you want something tangible how well does your phone operate on 5% battery? If you want to lose weight, you need to do more than just exercise. It's merely one component of weight loss. You need exercise, proper nutrition, rest time, and even a change in lifestyle. If you sit down all day, get up and go for a walk sometimes. After your workout, go dancing, go do some martial arts, go swimming, get a more physically active hobby. If you sit down at your job a lot, find more excuses to stand up and walk around. If you're sedentary for 95% of the day, then your body is going to be built to be sedentary 95% of the day.

Diet is the best and easiest way to control weight. Abs are made in the kitchen, not the gym. As far as working out goes, muscle confusion will burn the most calories in a given time frame. If you do the same exercises every day your body adjusts and uses less calories. In turn, you need to keep increasing the same mundane exercise to increase calorie burn. The Ketogenic Diet And Intermittent Fasting are the easiest ways to shed pounds.
