If you've been having back pain, this is the video for you!
This is a video about the science of seating, featuring someone far more qualified than I am to speak about the subject: Dr. Stuart McGill, Professor Emeritus of the University of Waterloo.
Dr. McGill is the world's eminent spine professor - there is no dispute on that matter - and it is a privilege for me to share this conversation with him with all of you.
By watching this video, you will learn about the principles behind sitting comfortably. These principles apply to a person's experience of sitting in any chair (Not just a Secretlab, Herman Miller, or Steelcase chair) and will help you to decide on the best course of action to eliminate your back pain.
For full disclosure, I did not receive any financial compensation to make this video - it is simply something that I proposed to Secretlab which, after a series of random events, led to their sending one of their flagship chairs to Canada. Thank you Secretlab for sponsoring the Titan Evo 2022 chair! It is and remains an honor to work with you, and I will continue to consider this one of the hallmarks of my adult life. I am glad to have had the honor to produce this; much more coming ahead - Enjoy the video!
Link to purchase Secretlab Titan Evo 2022: secretlab.co/?...
Do consider using this if you choose to purchase a Titan Evo and would like to support my work, as it grants me a small commission that I will use to invest and reinvest in this channel! Many other videos about the Titan Evo, Herman Miller Aeron and Embody, Steelcase Leap and Gesture, etc. are also on the channel, so feel free to browse at your leisure :)

Hey Victor, awesome video! Learning about stress migration, joint equilibrium, and finding the ideal starting sitting posture will definitely help in my recovery from my back injury. I've also got a couple of chairs I can look at for studying and gaming! I'm curious how you got into contact with Dr.McGill? As I mentioned I've been suffering from a pretty bad lower back injury since last year and there hasn't been a day without pain. In the video, Dr.McGill mentioned he still sees patients. I've read some of his books and I'd like to get his contact info so I could ask him a couple of questions and maybe even get a short zoom call to help me figure things out.

You're most welcome. I'm so glad that you found this valuable. Yes, learning how to sit is a very important thing. You gotta take care of your body to make sure that you can stay for the long run. Good luck on your seating journey and all the best in everything that you put yourself to do!

I changed my gaming desk to a stand up because sitting causes me back pain. Sometimes on the weekends I'll stand for hours playing games. it actually helps me.

Very good video! It is good to hear some science behind posture and sitting amidst all of the #ads and 'honest' reviews. No chair will fix your back pain! As a bit of critique for this type of interview format, I do feel that the zoom in (I assume to emphasize the good doctor's statement) was a little distracting but that seemed to only be a few times in the video. Otherwise I enjoyed it a lot!

Oh thank you Aerise! It's an absolute honor to have made it and to have spoken with the good doctor! Thank you for watching, and I am glad that you enjoyed it! It is true that no chair will fix your back pain - you will definitely have to stand up and get moving once in a while! Oh dear! I thought that the zooms might have been good for emphasizing the point, but I see that not everyone sees it that way - thank you for sharing the feedback, and I'll try to consider that for my next videos! I fear that I have been negatively influenced by the advice of a generation of RU-vidrs catering to the current attention span of our generation, many of whom advocate for a focus on click-through rates, high engagement, and gluing the viewer to their seat; in an occasion like this where a professor of Dr. McGill's caliber is speaking, I suppose this is not really necessary to keep the viewer captivated. Appreciate your taking the time to watch this video, and look forward to making many more in days ahead! ^^ V.

Hey, also Could you possibly make a video of the Secretlab Magnus desk with its L shape extension, even if you don't you'll still be the best chair reviewer.

My situation is different than anything. I have heard so far here. I have a very physical job where I am moving and lifting things all day. So on my days off, I am very tired and want to relax. Any suggestions on a good recliner for relaxing for a few hours on my day off? I have a bulging disc in the L5 S1 area. when I bend forward, it causes pain. I am reading The Back Mechanic But I haven’t found any information on seating just yet. I just got the book today. I have a zero gravity recliner that I have had for about 10 years. It is a human touch brand. It was amazing for helping to relieve my neck problems. But now it is my lower back and it is the problem and the bent knee position of the chair adds stress to my low back and makes my knees hurt if I fall asleep in it . I really need my rest time and I’d like to be able to watch tv , read , and nap a little in a chair with screaming pain . Thank you 😊. PS , I want a recliner.

Not sure if you found a solution yet but I'd suggest trying to find a way to watch tv, read, etc. while lying prone on your stomach. Perhaps propped up on some pillows. This will put your spine in extension and that tends to relieve pain for many people. Check out the McKenzie Method for more details.

What kind of book holder was Stu McGill using?

Can you tell us what are Mr. McGill's favorite ergonomic chairs? How do Herman Miller Aeron or Mirra 2 rank in his opinion?
@VictorTan
@VictorTan 2 года назад
Ah we spoke about the Aeron! He didn’t go too much into detail about particular chairs and didn’t comment on the Mirra, but he did mention that he got an Aeron from the set of the original Star Trek once upon a time and noted… Not that the Aeron was not really special (I don’t want to misquote him) but he did say not to look at it with stars in my eyes. He has noted a preference for task chairs while seated and focusing on a task though, as you have heard from the first part of the video, the Titan is a better chair for reading x relaxing in general, perhaps gaming if you game to relax!

@@VictorTan I'm looking specifically at a task chair for programming and I have Aeron and Mirra 2 in mind, still debating which to pick. What is your personal opinion?

awesome video .. could you give us a follow-up review of that lumbar support pillow pro... how is the product for long-term use? i thinking of getting one buts its kinda expensive
@VictorTan
@VictorTan 2 года назад
Thanks for watching, James! ^^ Were you talking about this video? Link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MkbhE6D4wHM.html&ab_channel=VictorTan Well I could do something like a 10 months down the line with the Titan Evo 2022 video or something like that - would that work? :D I think that my approach to using the chair and also the implements that I use with it has changed quite a bit since I got my first Titan Evo (I have bought four of them ever since). The Lumbar Pillow Pro is amazing! For long-term use, it's super supportive and it does work *with* the lumbar support, which you can learn how to adjust via Dr. McGill's advice towards the end of this video, so if you want something to multiply the effect of that lumbar support and you want a bit more softness in the chair, it will be amazing! You can definitely use it for long periods of time, though I don't *always* use it because while it's nice, the chair itself is incredible on its own :)
