The global health landscape faces unprecedented challenges, with diseases proliferating despite advances in medical knowledge and technology. Despite significant investment in research across multiple disciplines, including physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering, some diseases remain elusive to diagnosis and treatment. In contrast, pre-colonial India boasted a healthy populace with a robust understanding of health and effective indigenous medical systems like Ayurveda. However, the dominance of Western medicine during colonization marginalized these traditional practices. Now, there's a resurgence of interest worldwide, including in India, in alternative approaches like Ayurveda, signaling a shift away from solely chemical-based treatments. The systems approach of the Tridosha model of Ayurveda holds a lot of relevant and intriguing aspects that have been found to be effective in diagnosing and treating various physiological conditions.
Having said that, in today's world, with the recent Patanjali lawsuit, it is important to delineate what is truly scientific within Ayurveda as well as protect this age-old tradition from those who want to destabilize it, due to ideological reasons.
To discuss all this and more, we have with us one of Bharat's most illustrious practitioners and scholars of Ayurveda - Dr. Rama Jayasundar. Dr. Jayasundar heads the Department of NMR, AIIMS, New Delhi. She has had a rather fascinating trajectory, having received her doctorate in Physics from Cambridge University with training in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. While pioneering biomedical NMR work in Bharat, she went for a medical degree in Ayurveda (BAMS - Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery), and today is the only one at both the national and international levels to hold dual degrees in Physics and Ayurveda. Her current research interests harness the distinctive facets of her expertise (NMR, Physics, Ayurveda and Allopathy) to shed light on the scientific basis and working of Ayurveda.

Mrittunjoyji is the best successor to Rajivji's legacy, although he has a long way to go still. I saw his work with Vichar Manthan in England and now with Infinity. He is really sharp and strong in his conviction! I hope to see this intellectual kshatriya scale new heights in the years to come!

Dear Rajivaji. For donations, please give other options like Bhim, Gpay etc. And that too in Indian rupees. We don't use PayPal etc. Kindly consider so that you can garner donations from Indians living in India. You are doing great work for Hindu society.

Much in-depth research needs to be undertaken in this field. Open minded, critical and interdisciplinary approach to Ayurvedic science is called for. The present dialogue opens directions for such studies. Thanks for initiating such discourse for general people.

I really enjoyed this interview - especially how she explains the concept of worldview and how Ayurveda uses Vedantic worldview which is all about interconnectedness and irreducibility - great exposition. The concept of Worldview is explained by Michael Cremo beautifully as follows: A worldview involves four elements: (1) an ontology, an account of what things really exist; (2) a cosmogony, an historical account of how the things that exist have come into being; (3) an epistemology, an account of how things that exist can be known; and (4) an ethic, a way of living that takes into account the other three elements of the worldview. The ontology of the modern scientific worldview recognizes only the existence of ordinary matter and material forces. This is true either in terms of an absolute ontological naturalism, according to which-some scientists believe-vital forces, the soul, and God do not exist, or in terms of a methodological naturalism according to which scientists should purposely ignore “supernatural” elements such as a soul or God or vital forces, in order to explain things as far as possible in terms of matter and material forces However, we see that at various times in the history of Western science, scientists have accepted things such as subtle material elements, a nonmaterial soul, and God as part of their explanations of life and the universe. Ontology is important. It very much determines the nature of the other three elements of a worldview. For example,if an ontology is materialistic, this leads to cosmogonies that do not allow deliberate creation, intelligent design,or the unfolding of preexisting information. Such an ontology will allow only accounts of how matter combines in natural ways, the study of which reveals certain regularities. Epistemologically, such regularities can only be discovered and known by sense evidence and logical inference. Finally, such an ontology will support an ethic that values material consumption, material production, and material happiness.” Quoting from the introduction to 'My Science, My Religion' by Michael A. Cremo.

I wish Mrs Rama and his team comes out with clarity on ailments where Ayush is effective ( or less collateral damage) vis a vis Modern medicine . She has given an example of Anus Fustula . Madam please enlighten us on many such examples with research which can stand the rigour of modern evidence based research . Government should increase funding for joint studies by experts from both the disciplines ( without prejudice & bias).
