There's a period in Scottish history that had a profound effect, not only on Scotland but on the whole world!
This period is called the Scottish Enlightenment, and it really was Scotland’s ‘Golden Era’.
The Scottish Enlightenment ran for about 100 years from the mid 1700s through to the middle/end of the 1800s.
Personally, I feel it is the most important period in Scotland’s long history, and has defined, for many people, what Scotland and ‘Scottishness’ truly means.
Watch this video and learn how Scotland helped invent our modern world!

Thank you, Mr. Young, for this important bit of Scottish history. Although I have visited the UK before, I will be visiting Scotland for the first time in July/August this year (2024). I have been reading a tome on Scotland's history (Alistair Moffat's), and it's been a challenge. As an American (with British ancestry), our history begins so much later, and so I've dipped into videos and other media to assist in assimilating the English/French/Protestant/Catholic conflicts in Scotland's earlier history. Yes, some of my ancestors were Scots -- my grandfather, born in Iowa, was named "Bonnie Earl," and I discovered my unusual surname is a town on Shetland (likely from the Vikings). The Scottish public education system in the 1700's is particularly impressive. I worked for a year at a Presbyterian mission hospital in rural Malawi, where the nearest town was "Blantyre," named after Livingstone's birth place. Every such mission had a hospital, a church, and a school. Best wishes!

I enjoyed reading " Story of a Nation " by Magnus Magnuson along time ago. I borrowed it from my local library. I was amazed at what all the Scots had done. Your commentary reminded me so much of that book and was more in depth in some areas. I enjoyed the series and would enjoy more along that line. Well done sir!

Wonderful series Gordon. Thank you so much. I have a copy of `The Scottish Enlightenment; The Scots' Invention the Modern World`by Arthur Herman, on my bookshelf. Your series has encouraged me to pick it up and start immersing myself more fully. Thank you again for all your hard work and extremely interesting series.

Glad you enjoyed it, Gail. Yes, Mr Herman's book is excellent. I am in such despair this fantastic period of Scotland's history is largely ignored in Scotland today! Kind regards, Gordon

I’ve said it before but you have to be one of the best ambassadors for Scotland that has ever existed and the love of your country and culture is obvious ans admirable. The wealth of knowledge and influence the Scots have had around the world in phenomenal and hardly equaled by any other country. I’m proud to say I’m at least a little Scottish from way back. Isn’t everyone ???!! I can’t wait to visit there someday. Thx you for sharing the history with the rest of the world. Kindest regards mike

Your final lament and wish for Scotland also applies to modern America. We must relearn how to embrace the scientific method and rational thought to overcome the current pandemic of propaganda. We may not always agree , but we can agree to embrace rational thought and questioning those who seek to control. Your overarching lesson is to inspire the mind and spirit, then you can inspire the world.

Really enjoy your videos Gordon! I am learning a lot and now feel bad I gave away my Great Grand Mother’s Singer Sewing Machine. I had no idea the company was Scottish! I wish too the World had more of the enlightened vision as Scotland had - right now. We could use more of that.

We definitely could, Michele! My late mother had a Singer Sewing Machine that was treadle operated. No electricity required, she used to sit there with her feet going making or repairing our clothes! Regrettably we didn’t keep that, but my wife has a hand operated one from her granny. Great machines, well made! Kind regards, Gordon

@@gordonsscotland8441 Yes! Great Grandma’s was also a peddle run machine. My mom made all my doll’s clothes on it, as well as Chanel type suits that she taylored, and curtains etc. I think it’s nice your wife sews. Kind regards back to you Gordon!
