HUGE Shout out to Royal Enfield for sending this bike out to me! It's a ton of fun to ride, if held back a bit by their front brake, but what do you think? Would you start on something like this?
@BladedAngel
@BladedAngel Год назад
Yeah the front brakes are mushy for sure, but a cheap master cylinder does wonders (y'all already did it on the Interceptor). I Kinda like the Forgiving nature on Enfield's brakes. I've been using mine as a mule to teach my entire friend group!

It's worth mentioning, perhaps, that in many countries where the Himalayan is popular, the speed limit is like 100 kph max (60 mph). They're super big here in Ecuador and the max speed limit on any highway is 90 kph (so like 56ish mph) and I think that the little thumper is probably perfect for those speeds through the Andes. I am very excited to see what RE's new 450cc liquid cooled ADV does later this year. Hopefully that gets a scrambler variant as well.

@@Jackofafewtrades I live on a small island in the Philippines and have a Yamaha aerox 155cc and a motorstar msx 150 SRII with big bore kit, slide racing carb and a custom exhaust. Both bikes I cannot use all their power without driving off a mountain. Top speed here is 60 to 65 kmph any faster you risk driving off a mountain. Lots of twisty sharp turns through the mountains. No expressway on this island and a 200 cc bike max is all you could use here going up steep hills and mountains. A 150 cc bike here is perfect. A 125cc bike lacks power with backrider to climb steep hills. A 150cc is fine.

In my opinion, the Royal Enfield line is to current motorcycles what the air-cooled Volkswagens were to the automotive industry in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s: an inexpensive way to get a new vehicle; not the fastest, not the flashiest, but reliable transportation. I have a 1974 Bug, and you have to be conscious of the upcoming conditions (like hills, and passing situations), and not be afraid to change gears.

I bought a 350 classic just for bombing the back roads and I am pleasantly surprised with the quality. The price is right with the Chinese imports but the quality is lots better. I returned to riding after a couple decades off, and I chose the Scram based on its looks and that it was less likely to entice me to ride above my skill level. From my perspective, this is an excellent beginner bike, particularly for a rider that wants the three year warranty of a new bike without having to worry about dropping a super expensive bike. That being said, I'm already ready mentally for something that is a little more highway capable than the Scram. I don't mind zooming down a couple exits when I need to, but anything more than a dozen miles is enough to encourage you to take the next exit and get away from the vehicles that are much more capable of holding 70MPH than you are. Also, for the record, the bike does ok with a rider a bit heavier than you, though you might have to adjust the preload a bit. At 6'2" and pushing 290, it does fine on the flat roads of the midwest.

It's a great looking bike and I agree it has that rugged old FJ40 look, which is really super. What's a great bonus on this bike is the potential for someone to go from being a rider to working on bikes by doing mods that dial it into what they want. Doing the forks and shock would transform it and pretty much anyone with basic hand tools can do a set of cartridges and swap a monoshock. What a fun little project it would be to build a curve carving curb jumper.

I hope that RE listens to your input on these reviews, there is a great insight here not only about hardware and specs but also the solutions to them. Also I feel like you really put this into more than just what is on paper but what is the essence of why people ride and ultimately what a perspective buyer can expect if they are considering the bike. Also I like that your review stayed honest, and you were not trying to win favor with RE by saying everuthing is great. If they are smart they will keep giving you bikes and watching your day in the saddles. FREE R&D for them! Plus keepingyour reviews honest will hold way more impact when you like something about a bike and when you put it into perspective.

Pretty sure my bike came with the same master cylinder for the break component and I have absolutely no issue with stopping power on it. Maybe I lucked out...maybe you just got a bad one? Idk, but that's weird that mine is just fine compared to other bikes I've ridden. As for top speed and passing power, it is not meant to be an Interstate bike. It is tailored to back roads, gravel even, high ways, but not the mass transit speedways, so knowing this going into the purchase should be imperative as the user must know what the bike is capable of and meant to be driven on. In fact, that's why I got mine, I didn't want to drive on the Interstate, just the old high ways to and from work and school and to conserve on gas while enjoying the ride and scenic views. That's its sweet spot. When used where it is suppose to be it shines, when comparing it to the 600+ CC bikes meant for our blacktop/concrete speedways it's not comparable...and not meant to be.

TEC parts do a performance cam for the Himalalyan/Scram. Brings up the power to about 28.4BHP, up from the stock 24.3, and adds a bit more torque lower down the rev range. Add in DNA airfilter and you should be able to gain another HP or two. Not massive gains. But now you'll have the torque and power for those overtakes that you struggle with stock. Total cost of both is about £208, around $250. A fairly cheap upgrade.

Год назад
@@spitescorner Sarcasm? Yes, it was :) I enjoyed motocross for 9 years during my younger days, and I understand the appeal. However, as an adult and parent now, I can't help but notice that it may encourage a sense of machismo and recklessness. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), these attitudes can be dangerous, especially for beginners who may not have the stability or experience to handle such situations. It's undeniably cool and looks easy, but the physics of the flywheel can make it difficult to respond quickly in emergencies. I don't want to come across as grumpy, but I think it's important to remind people to exercise caution and not attempt these stunts at home unless they are experienced and confident in their safety. Sharing safety advice doesn't make you less appealing, and I hope you're open to promoting responsible behavior as well. By the way, it reminds me of when I was around 12 years old and loved riding my bicycle hands-free. I felt so confident that I would do it almost everywhere, even around corners. One day, though, my front wheel slipped on a manhole cover while I was turning at full speed. Thankfully, I only ended up with bruises and there were no cars nearby. It happened so fast, that I couldn't do anything, but that teaches me that I was doomed long before the event by my attitude.

You can get a sporty cam & air filter set which will add a few hp, still probably won't quite get it to 30bhp (it's 24 from the factory), but close. Have you tried it of road? Apparently it's pretty good in the dirt. Nice review.👍

Yeah can confirm, front brake feel on the Interceptor is really bad, the brake works well but does not inspire confidence. The rear brake is even worse on mine. Too bad cause the engine really wants to go above the speed limit. And since you mentioned the DRZ, there's a 450cc liquid cooled engine coming for the RE line reportedly making something around the 40~45 hp mark, there's been spy shots of the Himalayan frame rocking said engine. From what I gather this combination comes from a Dakar bike Royal Enfield has been developing. So do expect the Himalayan/Scram 450 as well as a Hunter 450 to hit the indian market soon.

Glad to know it's not just me on the front brake. Not sure about your rear, this one feels great. Also I haven't seen those spy shots myself, but if the rumors are true, it would be a killer little bike I think.

@@spitescorner My 650 is just about to get its first service tho, I'll have them check the rear brake then, maybe it's pads no bedded in properly but I doubt it. The 450 test mules have even been spotted in britain as well, together with the Shotgun 650 (Super Meteor bobber-ish thing), the future is bright for the Indian company.

What is the little LED light within the halogen headlight? My Continental GT has same. Is it a DLR for markets where lights aren’t always on?
@spitescorner

Might be a parking light for other markets. My Ducati has that, but a lot of US market bikes don't so it could be vestigial

They would need to go to Liquid Cooling which comes with its own issues the first time and added complexity. This bike you can fix on the side of an Indian Road.

Nice review! I have to note though, I've been riding since 1972 and not once have I ever needed a tach or a gear indicator. It seems as if every review I've seen recently complains about the lack of one or more of those items.

I have been looking at this bike for sometime as an option for replacing my klx230. I don't ride the klx off road much so it seems like getting a bike like the scram 411 is a good idea. Plus the seat on the scram could actually accommodate a passenger unlike the klx which is comfortable for nobody.

Why buy a klx and not bring it offroad? Convert it to the supermoto :)

@@houseofroos I would just get an 390 adventure but I can't talk myself into spending that much. A duke 390 would bring my bike total to 3 and I am out of room in my garage at that point.

Honestly just cleaning the rotors and swapping out for sintered pads on the front made plenty of difference. Not perfect, but 3x as good as stock for initial bite and progressive feel. Still a liiiiiittle spongy. :P

Agree on the dash, but my pref would be change the needle to a tach, and run a digital speedo in the center, instead of hte other way 'round. Easier to watch that red needle in your peripheral vision than read the numbers.
