The Second Boot on a Stagecoach | Engels Coach Shop

We finished the driver's boot, but there is a second boot we need to build to carry the passenger's luggage. Everything was missing so I have to forge the hinges from scratch and determine the size this boot should be. Building and restoring horse drawn vehicles is always interesting, because each vehicle has it's own history to discover.

I sometimes wonder if you have any idea just how peacefully a stressful week is transformed into a peaceful weekend when we have a chance to take a step back and watch the work you do. Learning, watching - and most of all relaxing, you bring your expertise to us. It's valuable, and some of that value is the reminder that craftsmanship and dedication to authenticity are a true American tradition. Thank you Dave, and thank you Diane for your editing expertise!

I sure do like watching the sparks fly when you forge-weld. Very satisfying. On another note, I think it is somewhat ironic that the flux you use in the welding process most likely is borax. The same stuff the 20-mule-team wagons hauled in the old days. Seems there's a circular history in the old west.

I think it more likely the extra wide hinge pieces on the front was to allow for the one bolt to be shifted to avoid the support. It might have been weak at that point so the wainwright made it a little wider to avoid that.

I just saw the video concerning how you did the Borax wagons for RU-vid and how you kind of "fell into" buggy and wagon building and repair without a bit of difficulty as to customers, even though you had to start your career from almost nothing as far as prior experience is concerned. You succeeded superbly! Congratulations!! I am going t9o ask you a crazy question: Did things related to your work, from the start, ever seem like you had "help" with important things just "falling from the sky", as it were, just when you needed them? I have an odd-ball hobby: Armor and Ordnance of the Age of Ironclads", which is unbelievably successful in my study, much of which I did all by myself over more than 35 years, also from nothing as to ever studying metallurgy. I had to "ad lib" the whole thing. My "luck" at this was beyond phenomenal, in many ways, much like a movie for Indiana Jones. Too phenomenal to my mind. Did you have such things happen to you that assisted your success? If so, then I am beginning to believer that this world is not what we think it is...

I have a Spring Mountain Buckboard, that was involved in a Gold Shipment Robbery, in 1903. It had been disassembled by Harvey Logan/Kid Curry, and gang members, and, buried. It is located out on the old Homestead, on the Arizona Strip. I also know the location of a Wells Fargo stagecoach, with all the harness collars, etc, along with whatever may be in the Rear Boot, and a couple empty Strong Boxes. What would it be worth today? It was backed into a Limestone cave, and entrance sealed.
