I completely agree..every living human being should watch this..the “elderly”..which hopefully we each and every one of us eventually become..are still human! Living life and a persons desires doesn’t just change when we reach a mature age…and the older I get the more this matters! We need to stop overlooking and/or treating older folks as if they’re different or no longer desire a “normal” life. So many people are overlooked or discarded when they reach a certain “mature” age..what a shame..when these are the people we can learn the most from…we all want to LIVE..until we die..not just EXIST before we die. ❤

My grandmother was the same way! Her birthday was May 3rd 🙃 currently I’m the main caretaker of my husband’s grandparents (they live with us now) and it’s so vastly different. It really makes me wonder why some people strive to do all they can for as long as they can and others don’t.

The converse is also true. Old age is easier when you're a good person, and you treat(ed) your friends/family/children well. My parents are toxic and we have always had a rocky relationship, and they don't have many friends because of their poor behavior. (My mom is the culprit and my dad is her enabler.) They're elderly and now very upset that I won't quit my job, sell my house, uproot my entire life, and move in with them to take care of them. Gee....maybe you shoulda treated me better. I will help them as much as I can from my home 450 miles away.

Ted, I feel your pain. I am 69 and still need to work a few hrs a week. I can survive modestly because I have simplified my life. Old car, moved to have very low rent. I hope you can have some peace soon. ☮️

I have seen many people that have aged well. I am one. But I have known a few..for example....who were in their 50s and looked half their age.. except the one you mentioned is 60!

a lot of people including myself have observed that people with darker skin age the least. it's the melanin protection. i saw the mum's racing shoes and i thought to myself, they need more padding!

I hope that you will never forget that being a mother is the hardest job in the world and most honorable. I know it's cheesey and said before, but as you are now experiencing, you know it's true. I wish with all my heart and might that our American society supported and revered our mothers. Hi, I’m 65 very very soon. I just am lost without my partner who died. It was love at first sight when he was 18 & I on my 17 birthday. I’m struggling to carry on, we were together almost 44 years 😢💛

⁠@@florence1395hi friend. I am almost your age. My husband died, suddenly and unexpectedly, seven-years ago. And, he was fifteen years younger-than I. The first year can be really tough. For a while, for me anyhow, living each day was strange and difficult. Friends and family pushed me to go out and do things. I wanted a lot of alone time. Which is what I did. I was somewhat selfish. I did what gave me as much comfort as possible. That meant staying home and saying “no” to others who wanted to push me, before I was ready. It really was the entire first year, and life became recognisable again. Of course, I miss him terribly, and probably always will. But, the sadness won’t always be like it is now. It gets better, as in improved-better, not resolved-better. I promise. ❤

Just turned 70 still doing repairs at my properties. The older you act the faster you get old.

I have never heard it put that way before, that "Age is undervalued in America". Well said. I would love to see Lisa do a documentary on that very fact. More people need to learn about and embrace the aging. They might learn alot !

I am so sorry for your loss. When my 90 year old Dad passed 5 years ago, I was devastated. People think it’s a chore to care for them, but we had so much fun the last 3 years of his life while he stayed with me. People, don’t miss out on the experience if you can take care of a parent. It’s not drudgery. No one knows you like your family, and when roles change, you see yet another side of your loved one. We laughed every day for the 3 years he was here.

I agree. I'm 74 and spent the last 6 weeks visiting each of my three children. They welcomed me, they nourished my body and soul. I don't ever want to burden them. Their lives are already more of a burden than mine ever was. They are good people. I am very fortunate. But I'd rather not live with any of them. I will most likely have to though, because none of us are financially able to consider other options. We are all hard workers, even my disabled son works hard, but life is a financial struggle. However, we do have love and for that I'm deeply grateful.

I was also a nurse,but retired, looking after both my brother's and I'm also a pensioner

We have been given power, love, and a sound mind and for us that are believers forgiveness and atonement. God is with us, strengthening us, and will bring us home to eternity with Him. Hallelujah praise be to God almighty. 🙏🏼

Me too. My dad was playing tennis and doing yard work till 85 and then the “decline by 1,000 cuts” started. Bad hip pain but due to a stupidly over radiated skin cancer on his ankle he couldn’t get a replacement. So that took him from cane to walker to then not being able to drive and then only being able to use walker to go about 100 feet. He died 6 weeks after a surgery to just shave down the bone to relieve some pain. No cancer no heart disease no high blood pressure. Nothing. But post op his cognitive level started dropping and his appetite then he got covid AGAIN then he got weaker and simply couldn’t swallow which I didn’t know is a super common end of life hastener. Unlike in soap operas- no one would give him a feeding tube. 86-tan independent playing tennis totally sharp and enjoying life. 7 yrs of incremental decline and it was all over. We called him “man of steel” as NOTHING stopped him. He was so strong and stubborn and determined. But Father Time catches up. My yoga /line dancing & ballet mom also till 85-just bit by bit lost confidence of balance and movement. She can still take a walk with not much problem. But the whirlwind that I knew my whole life is vanished to this much weaker , lost since my father died, no longer super human mom. It’s STUNNING. I got to live in blissful denial so long because they presented so vibrantly. But now I just mourn the loss so deeply. Even tho my mom is still alive- I feel like the last woman profiled crying “I miss my mom”. Even without Alzheimer’s or memory decline you miss the parent that made YOU feel safe and was all powerful in your eyes.

My heart aches for us. Our parents aging and dying is unbearable. Sending love and comfort, Katie

I agree, however not in North America. I'm a private senior care giver in Canada helping seniors age in place. And more often than not their families have very little if any involvement in their parents lives or care. Many of my clients have removed their children from their wills and giving to charity instead. Their children will be in for a shock one day.

Yeah he seems so nice,like his daughters. My heart goes out to them as it sounds like they lost him recently.

They had a good father. Good parents raise good children, I'm sure he deserved every care he received from his daughters. I read he died, but they all had about 13 more years together, after this video was made.

This documentary was filmed in 2012 and was aired on TV in February 2013. It couldn't have been filmed in 2010. At 4:50 they even mention a bill overdue and said the bill is from 2011 that's almost a year overdue.

Sometimes, older ppl are stuck w well meaning ppl but ppl who believe they know best. If you aren't at least a PhD in geriatrics, be assured you aren't even close to knowing what's best. Some ppl are control freaks, have hidden agendas, or are lazy and looking out for their own welfare. Never assume responsibility over someone's life wo asking what they want and doing your best to help them get it, just as you should at any other time in life.

How did you do it? My mom REALLY shouldn’t be driving anymore. I was the one that told my great grandma that she wouldn’t be driving anymore and I was nominated because she was way less likely to get angry with me than other family members. My mom would be the one to never speak to us again.

Use it or loose it. I’m also 73, but most people think I’m in my early 60s. My last boyfriend was 20 years younger.

I watch these type of videos for many reasons but one is to help me stay consistent in my health habits body, mind, and spirit. I do my best, God does the rest. He holds my lot.

Oh my friend, we know alllll about “best” and “healthy.” At some point we decide before we die-and that reality is very, very real-when are we gonna be able to eat what we want and do what we want when we want? It’s now time to just be and do what we please. You see, we *are* making our *own* “best decisions.” They’re just not *your* choices. We’re more in touch with our finiteness than you understand. And we don’t need to ask permission or apologize to anyone for our choices or our existence.

What's even harder for us seniors is people thinking they know best our medical needs but dont go to dr apts with us so they can here our annual tests results. I am 67 and on no meds. Age doesnt require meds

Some older people are happier to die in their own homes, even though they are practically killing themselves because they can’t look after themselves. I can understand that.

@@reneemac111absolutely 100%. Of course if dementia is advancing then different, my father managed with carers going in for 15mins twice daily. Took his meds for week all in one day didn’t bother me didn’t kill him.

Also, are the other siblings at least helping out once or twice a month?

I agree...would have been nice to see single seniors that have roommates due to finances, couples who don't marry to avoid lower SSI, and other situations caused by financial restrictions. How are those seniors navigating their lives, I wonder.
