thank you. I just re-watched my video it felt a little "painful to watch" when I compare it to my videos now. I am happy you found it simple and easy to follow. Maybe it gets more complicated when you upscale the sawdust burner to say heat your workshop. thanks for watching.

Nice sawdust stove Chris, they do burn for a while and if you have a bunch of sawdust laying around it is a great way to have free fuel and get rid of your sawdust at the same time. Thanks for sharing.

Pro tip, put the centre dowel a quarter of the way across the tin. That way, when it burns, you get a crescent moon shape, exposing more dust to the flame front.

add some used oil or melted fat / butter to the sawdust before cramming it in the can and it will burn longer, hotter, and cleaner and the sawdust wont collapse, and the dowels (pre oil them) will slide out easier too. But great idea. I love hobo stoves.

It's a great way to use up sawdust. More sawdust = bigger stove. 55gal sawdust stove... You could heat a garage. I need a to make a bigger stove to reduce down the maple sap when I make maple syrup lol

When I made a larger one with a big soup can I used an empty gas bottle for the middle. The larger one worked much better. I also added air to one and was able to melt aluminum down.

It's clever and nice and simple. I just don't see an application unless there's lots of sawdust around and no twigs for the rocket stove. That's not a put-down. It just doesn't have any advantages. Unless, again, someone has sawdust to burn... literally.
@RealQuickChris
@RealQuickChris 7 лет назад
+Kube Dog May not be a ton of uses in the woods but I have tons of saw dust and I was looking for uses for it. It works good if you wanted to mess around out in the yard or want to use up the sawdust you have collected instead of tossing it. Some people use a 55gal drum and heat their shop with it. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment and thanks for watching.

I wonder if you were to add petroleum jelly to the saw dust for the bottom and top, if that would stabilize it for you. If you wanted to stay more natural you could use bees wax or heated pine pitch to the saw dust.
@RealQuickChris
@RealQuickChris 6 лет назад
+macnuth I think they are all very good ideas it all depends how much time you want to spend on it. I made a larger one and that worked really well for getting my DIY charcoal chimneys started for the garbage can turkey.

I tried this and got LOTS of smoke and minimal heat. There was no fire or embers visible in the can/sawdust. Admittedly, it smoldered for over an hour. The sawdust was dry and had no chemicals in it. It was also quite fine. It would go through a fine kitchen strainer. So, what am I doing wrong?
@danc101
@danc101 10 месяцев назад
I've tried making sawdust stoves a few times with different sized cans and even with a different sized hole through the sawdust and none of it works. The flames always go out leaving it smouldering and producing loads of smoke. If I blow on it it does flame back up but only to die down and smoke again. To be honest I think sawdust stoves just aren't all they're cracked up to be

can u use semi-dry saw dust?
@RealQuickChris
@RealQuickChris 6 лет назад
you might have to use some kindling to get it going but when it gets hot it should help it dry out.
@SimonPeterMulima
@SimonPeterMulima 6 лет назад
i also witnessed the fact that the smoke is very strong for the eyes. the smoke is also invisible but you will have to give off a lot of tears. like as if u are peeling onions, is there a remedy for this?
@RealQuickChris
@RealQuickChris 6 лет назад
where there is smoke there is fire. I have a lot of campfires and I will burn everything from sticks in the yard to fallen trees. I let is sit outside and it gets wet when you burn wet wood it is smokey. fire needs 3 things Fuel, Heat, and Oxygen the only thing I have noticed that helps when burning wet wood is more heat. I nice big hot fire helps dry the wet wood out faster. so in the case of wet sawdust, we could lay it out on a tarp in the sun and let it dry or try having a bigger fire. I have used a big can to make a sawdust stove and it works pretty well, it's hot. (video here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jx92uFKsRJ0.html ) the sawdust I am using is by no means bone dry but its also not dripping wet. once you have the sawdust burner going you can add some small sticks in the bottom to add more fuel that will generate more heat just be careful not to cut off the air flow. Fuel, Heat, and Oxygen it's an interesting ratio I tried adding more Oxygen and it was amazing what happened. (video here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5XAgpwkxAFc.html ) I don't want to toss out the sawdust so it is interesting to me to see the different ways everyone has to gain a use for it. what do you want to use this type of sawdust burner for? A bigger can might just help solve your smokey problem.
@SimonPeterMulima
@SimonPeterMulima 6 лет назад
I was actually alluding to the fact that even when the smoke is not visible anymore(because the husks have dried). It itches in the eyes. thus causing teary eyes. this is not the case when we use charcoal. Do you have a remedy for that?
@RealQuickChris
@RealQuickChris 6 лет назад
that is a good question and I am not sure if you can get wood, sticks or sawdust to burn like charcoal. Charcoal has been kind of super dried out or rather cooked in a container so much so that gasses are produced and released believe it or not you could in the process of making charcoal use the gases produced to run an engine. (wood gasification) so I wonder if the gases produced from burning wood is what is causing teary eyes and not in charcoal since these gasses were released during its creation process. I am just thinking out loud. so no I don't have a remedy for that but if I come across something I will let you know. sorry I could not be much of a help on this one but you have given me something to think about.

@SenhorTudo
@SenhorTudo 4 года назад
@Chris S Nah, I use a rubber mallet to compress the sawdust even more and keep adding sawdust until the can is almost full. You can whack it quite hard. The burn time is lengthened considerably and the sawdust is quite solid. The problem with the fluids suggested here is that they stink the place up and, if you're using your stove for cooking, they will give your food a lousy taste.
