Thank you so much for being the caring doctor that you are. You make a difference to the lives you touch. Wish you could come to the Pensacola, Florida area. Love Nurse Cindy.
Love your work, Dr. Westman. Thank you. Keto is kind of easy to do, but getting past the emotional side of eating is very difficult, which makes it difficult to stay on keto even though keto reduces cravings. It doesn’t reduce life’s stress and the stress eating that goes along with it. It would be great if advice on this subject was dealt with more in conjunction with the discussion of keto.
I'm a big fan of yours Dr Westman, also Dr Ali. In fact I chatted with you for a few minutes in Breckenridge after I told my weight loss story. I really agree with your approach to stick to the basics, which for me means low carb. I do not add a bunch of fats. I've been doing experiments on myself with protein quantity, finding that what my body requires hasn't been exactly constant. Please keep up the good work. The word is getting out!
Oh yes after 6 months on Keto my Total Cholesterol went up 10 points to 262 and my HDL went down from 74 to 67 and my Triglycerides from 102 to 77 and my Dr FREAKED! Wants me on a Statin ASAP, from what I’ve heard and read this is very predictable after 6 months on Keto? Do these numbers concern you Dr Westman? Wish I was in the Texas area to attend the Double Tree event! Thank You for all your video’s!
Hi jane striker, This is the Adapt Team. Please watch these two videos from two cardiologists. Lastly, one of the biggest studies ever done concluded (especially for women) those with the lowest cholesterol numbers had the highest mortality rate and those with the highest cholesterol, had the lowest. Hi Jake Klippenstein, embarking on a Keto Lifestyle does not need to be complicated. Eliminating starch and carbs may seem daunting but could be done simply 😊 Videos and podcasts that complicate things should be avoided.
Jake Klippenstein I avoided this diet for a long time due to the videos that talk too much about macros! This Doctor will help us to find a more natural easier way hopefully
Hi, I want to follow keto diet as a lifestyle. I do exercise 6 days a week, My question is : can I eat without worry about calories intake in keto diet?
hi it all depends on if this is for therapeutic use of for weight loss. For weight loss, calories matter, for therapeutic use, not so much. I hope this helps.
I do not need to lose weight, I am 5' 3" and 120 pounds and 91 years old. I have severe arthritis in my back and on a walker and I am trying the Keto diet for Inflammation. What do I need to do to keep from losing weight
Hi Ratanza Yates, your body would normally find its “set point” this is the point where your body would find its homeostasis, it’s happy place. You should eat when hungry and stop when full 😊
My heart always pounds really hard after 3 days of low carb and I can't tell if maybe my thyroid medicine is overpowered now that I'm bringing my insulin and carb levels down or if it's just like a sugar detox change in my mitochondria or something. I'm always scared because I'll go back to eating sugar because I don't want my heart to pound like that because I'm scared it's dangerous. What do you recommend. And if somebody does low carb how long it actually take to actually affect your thyroid and thyroid medication. It doesn't happen quickly right? It takes like 3 to 6 months right? I'm just trying to figure out how to do this safely and comfortably. I'd really appreciate your input thank you
Hi E.I.K. Cutting sugar from your diet should only have positive benefits, remember, a well formulated Keto diet is simply eating real wholesome food. Carbs are not an essential nutrient. A keto diet won’t replace your thyroid medication. You will still need to be monitored by your doctor for it to be adjusted. I hope this helps.
Hi free2danz1960, a ketogenic diet is a carbohydrate restriction of around 20-25 grams per day or less. This will typically achieve a state of “Ketosis” where your body produces ketones. A modified program is higher in carbs and you don’t necessarily produce ketones but your insulin levels are still low. Some folks can do this with fat loss success and some don’t.
Sorry wasn't finished writing about weight gain after surgery. I was wondering what could be going with this weight gain and how do I get back to losing on keto. I was 4 lbs from my goal and now I'm 10lbs. Please help me to understand and how to fix it!
Karen Chamblee I would imagine the food they gave you. This would have knocked you right out of Ketosis. The best thing to do is to cut the carbs and sugar to get back on track.
catz dumo yes, completely fine, we recommend not following a typical therapeutic Keto diet, as the fat consumption may be too high for you, rather maintain your current fat intake and limit the carbs.
Hi doctor I’m about to follow your lifestyle medicine no sugar, no starch diet. I printed your printout and especially page 4 of acceptable foods to eat. I had a question Dr. Westman... how about eating seeds? Like pumpkin seeds, in fact all seeds and nuts? How about nutritional yeast? I get from mother’s market at the bulk section. Please help me if nuts, seeds, chia seeds, flax seeds and of course the nutritional yeast. Also, will it be okay to eat a whole medium avacado? Appreciate your response. Thanks!!
Hi Sharon Money, this is the Adapt Team answering. Dr. Westman advocates sticking to the allowed foods on page 4 for the best results. Some may do ok with foods not mentioned on the list, but for everyone wanting the best chance at success, stick to page 4 😊
Dr. I REALLY need help with my lack of sleep on Keto/If. I haven't slept good for months and I am at my wits end. Everything else is going so well. I've lost weight but the lack of sleep is really affecting me. I take 500mg of magnesium at night, no caffeine, no blue light. My room is dark, cool, and quiet. I DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO. I either can't get to sleep, or if I do fall asleep, I wake up after 2-3 hours. Please help.
Lorie V. Get a diurnal cortisol test aka adrenal stress index test to see if your cortisol is too high at night. Could be keeping you up and waking you up at night. FWIW I had the same issue.
Hope you can really help me . I'm having trouble eating all my fats /fibre will I still be able to get into ketosis hope you can tell me thanks Colin UK
We don’t advocate a high fat approach. You may want to check out Dr. Westmans “Keto Made Simple Masterclass” enrollment is open but closes tonight at midnight. Go to www.adaptyourlifeacademy.com to learn more. Click Keto Masterclass at the top
I keep hearing people talk about “page four”, a list of preferred foods to eat for a keto food plan but I can’t seem to find it anywhere. Can someone please respond with a link for this information? Thank you.
Hi Shelly Skye, here is a 16 min video that has all the allowable foods that are on page 4 😊 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-84xZMhysMDM.html
Today I decided to give up keto since my cholesterol is now 475 and my ldl 380. Maybe it simply isn't the right eating plan for me. Seems to be working great for my husband though.
Hi KoiPondPeppy, Before giving up on account of your cholesterol number. Please watch these two videos from two cardiologists. Lastly, one of the biggest studies ever done concluded (especially for women) those with the lowest cholesterol numbers had the highest mortality rate and those with the highest cholesterol, had the lowest. Hi ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-57KGmdUguw8.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8A-BEm8xtW0.html
Thank you. I had already watch both of those but when they say high cholesterol, they don't say how high. Most people get put on statins at like 220 or so. How high is too high? 475tc seems scary high and 380 ldl is even scarier.
Hi KoiPondPeppy, the outcome of Statins don’t seem to prove that you will live more than a couple days longer, yet the studies showing a link between low cholesterol and mortality is quite evident. Of course, we believe you should listen to the Doctor that you trust. Thank you for commenting 😊
Thank you I do appreciate it. It's just that when all these videos say high cholesterol, I'm not sure if they're talking about cholesterol as high as mine. They just say high but not how high.
Dr Westman, I have been doing Keto since October and have lost 20 lbs yay! I just got results of my blood work and everything is great but my LDL is 290.. Dr is scaring me telling me I'm going to have a heart attack or stroke and wants to put me on meds which I refused. Told me to cut all added animal fats and use only plant fats and recheck blood in 30 days. Please, any advise would be greatly appreciated
Hi Eileen Sullivan, this is the Adapt Team. It’s difficult for us to give you advice contradicting your Dr. and always advise you to follow your Dr. We do not believe that a high LDL is alarming as an independent marker. If Triglyceride numbers are low and your ultra sensitive CRP is low, we believe the LDL number is benign. I hope this helps.
Adapt Your Life my total cholesterol is 394. My triglycerides are 104, HDL is 86. We are drawing blood again in 30 days. Is their anything I can do prior to the next draw to better these numbers
Im really confused. I thought high protein would cause you to store as fat if you're not needing it and yet a couple of Dr. Westman's videos say unlimited ? Then I see Nurse Cindy's videos and she's doing net carbs? Help me understand please.
Hi Dyan Bailey, thank you for your comments and support. We believe that if you are Metabolically ill, you should follow Dr. Westman’s 20g total carbohydrate program. Typically, it is very hard to over eat protein as this macronutrient is the most satiating. Especially when combining this with natural fats. We prefer to keep things simple and eat to satiety. I hope this helps. 😊
What advice would you give to a 57 yr old, postmenopausal woman with no ovaries or replacement hormones and that also takes lexapro for depression and anxiety? I have been on a eat no white diet and lost 25 lbs but I have stalled now and would like to try keto to lose the fat in my belly, thighs and butt. Thanks for your imput.
Hi dr Westman please help me if you can......I have high cholesterol and doctor is always trying to get me on statins I am also type 2 diabetic I have been on lazy keto for about 5 months lowering my bs but cholesterol is still high I’m in Australia and was wondering if you have any suggestions total cholesterol 7.4 trig 2.8 HDL 1.3 and LDL 4.8 fasting doctors scare me with telling me all about heart attack and stoke with high cholesterol any advice would be appreciated I’m 57 years thank you 😊
Love your videos, great info. What would you consider adequate protein to consume inn a day? I seem to be losing inches, but the scales tell me I have only lost a few pounds. Been doing Keto for 2 months now. I'm over 60 and walk 2 miles a day, plus elliptical for 30 mins.
If you are walking more, you may be adding muscle mass and losing excess water. The same volume of muscle weighs more than the same volume of fat. Do not worry about the weight on the scale. Consider how easy it is to walk up a hill or to use your elliptical machine. Do you see improvement there?
Hi Terry Williams, here is a 16 min video that shows all of the allowable foods found on page 4 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-84xZMhysMDM.html
Please, please write a book so I can finally understand Keto !!!!! I gave read a lot and am still intimidated by how to get it all in balance so you can use fat as fuel.
Hello All, any advise? I had a DEXA Scan done which details my resting metabolism. Most diets will say men should hv about 1800 calories to lose weight....however at 53 years old and 260 pounds my resting metabolism is only 1291. So if 3500 calories is one pound thst means I need to reduce my calories by 500 a day to expect a 1 pound loss...I can do more cardio/strength training to help too but is it realistic long term to live on 791 calories for 260 pounds n someone working out more....guess it explains my yo yo dieting...I do ok for a while, then off the diet and the cycle begins all over again. I am on testosterone replacement therapy due to a genetic issue...not sure that plays into this at all. Any ideas of really increasing my metabolism? I swear I’m have less than 20 carbs a day and the scale is NOT moving and my calories are not outrageous either....very frustrating. Tyvm for your advise and feedback
Hi Theresa Herfindahl, the message was subtle but Dr. Westman mentiond “you don’t have to eat organic, grass fed or expensive meats, don’t have to eat particular fats and oils, eat moderate amounts of protein and keep the carbs below 20g total per day.” 😊
Good Day, Doctor, i have a concern, i'm wondering if you can tell me if it's true that doing intermittent fasting for 14 to 16 hours causes damage, I was told a prolonged ketogenic state ends in renal failure, And i'm concerned if that is true. I have a Doctor in my group, and she is also learning, and i would like to clarify that with her, since she is the one saying that, Also is Being in Cetosis for long time Dangerous. In advance Thank you for your reply
LOVE NATURE & HEALTH Hi LOVE NATURE & HEALTH, this is the Adapt team answering. IF while being in Ketosis for 14-16 hours will not cause Kidney damage and neither is it dangerous. We are of course talking about a otherwise healthy individual without pre existing conditions. I hope this helps.
I thank you so much for your reply. How, about being in Intermittent fasting for 14 to 16 hours lets say 3 to 4 time a week. I was told that a prolonged ketogenic state ends in renal failure, Do you know if that is true?
Hi Jennifer S, it’s basically this video (please see link). Dr Westman covers all the allowable foods in a hand out he teaches at Duke and they are all on “page 4” ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-84xZMhysMDM.html
Awesome people...would you advise a person to start le ketogenic lifestyle if she has suffered from severe episodes of atopic, contact and dyshidrotic dermatitis for 5 years? I ask because of the keto rash that she could be more prone of? I would appreciate your comments Thank you very much!!!!😊
When is this reaching India... Doctors in India are not updated with this new research... they are not helping or suggesting patients to start with Keto... I'm trying to advise and suggest to my family and friends, but few are not taking it serious and mostly with negative thoughts :(
Very deceptive title for this video, secret for how to do Keto easy. It was mostly rambling, shout outs, and just difficult to follow along. I was disappointed, and while I am sure he’s knowledgeable, I don’t think I’ll be watching him again. I think he should have called it rambling ad for my next appearance and q and a session.
If none in San Diego in the near future, is there a way to buy/subscribe online to the current workshop taking place today in Houston? Is it being recorded?
Hi Lana Black, please go onto our website www.adaptyourlife.com and subscribe so we can keep you informed. We are planning on making this available. Thank you for your support.
Ive read that keto will result in feeling full and not feeling hungry all of the time. Actually about 2 hrs after ive eaten my stomach feels empty again. Im eating correctly but still not losing any more weight either.
