In this episode I will be visiting Santa Cruz, the capital of Tenerife and then I will head to the south to discover a hidden gem of Tenerife- abandoned leper colony extending on the hill above Abades.
The Auditorio de Tenerife has become an emblem of the city and also of the whole Canary Islands. The edifice contains two main rooms the Symphony Hall and the Chamber Hall.
Nearby the auditorium there is one of Spain’s busiest harbors. It plays a pivotal role in commercial and passenger traffic, as well as in being a major stopover for cruises en route from Europe to the Caribbean.
Abades is a small holiday resort located on the south-east coast of Tenerife. While climbing the hill above Abades, the whole ghost town reveals behind the ruined church, with structures where broken beds, bathrooms, and ceramic tiles mingle with scattered trash, artifacts and graffiti.
The abandoned station was built in the 40s by Franco’s military as a quarantine colony to address the rising number of leprosy cases. The project was to include 40 buildings, among others: the impressive church, a hospital (the largest edifice in the complex), a crematorium, a school, many bungalows, an administration’s building facing the sea.
