What is your DEXA reading?
@unexpectedfarm2000
@unexpectedfarm2000 4 года назад
@@BlueSkies360 Because I had no idea what a DEXA reading is, I had to look it up. I've never had a bone density scan, so I don't know the answer to your question. I do know that the only broken bone I've ever had in my life was back in the 1950s, when I was still eating animals and animal products. (I've been vegetarian since 1962, vegan since 1975.) BTW, my husband and I happily donate blood to the American Red Cross every two months.

@@dewannaglow8365 OK young lady, does it mean that nowadays your eat Vegan Frog legs too? or just Vegan hamburgers? Eating veggies is a good thing, i have no comments about that. The only comment i have is that people become vegans as they don't want animals to suffer for our consumption and yet... you guys shape your food as meat. That simply doesn't make sense to me. You're young, around 20, so you're in good health but by becoming Vegan you're playing with your heath as you will have B12 deficiency at some stage. B12 vitamins are found in Beef, liver, and chicken. Fish and shellfish such as trout, salmon, tuna fish, and clams. Fortified breakfast cereal. Low-fat milk, yogurt, and cheese. Eggs.

I think there are some people who do experience this for one reason or another; but Science justifies that plants are far more easily digestible. yeah but that's the same with meat burgers...a lot of people pile on sauces and they don't really know what the meat taste is any more. The reason why vegan steak bakes have taken off in the uk is because people are still tasting the seasoning that was on the original meat product and proves they don't really know the taste of actual meat.

I made these burgers (obviously estimated his measurements), but with a couple of edits: I added smoked paprika, a tiny bit of liquid smoke, and a tiny bit of both balsamic and worschestire sauce (vegan brand). I cannot use oats, so I used quinoa flakes. Also, when I cooked the mushrooms, I added some garlic to them toward the end. These are very tasty. They have the appearance of meat, because they brown so nicely. The flavor is great (especially with the added smokey flavors!). It's a little tricky to process well and not have it get too mushy. To improve that, I kneaded in some ground walnuts at the end by hand. It really restored some texture. These are a keeper.

Combine ingredients and warm in a saucepan over low to medium heat, whisking until smooth. You may need to adjust the amount of milk or English Farmhouse to your taste or the consistency you prefer. I was making it thinner to stir with pasta, but you could use less milk for a thicker cheese for burgers.

The current trend towards plant based burgers are the commercial ones like Impossible burger and Beyond burger that mimics meat burgers perhaps to the point of being indistinguishable. What's shown here is a chef's creation which probably tastes good but probably has less of a resemblance to real meat. However, the carbon footprint of this chef created plant based burger is probably much lower than that of the commercial plant based burgers and hence far more sustainable. For one, the commercial ones have over 20 ingredients and often use coconut oil which has it's own sustainability issues. Please publish this recipe as it's probably far more sustainable and healthier than the commercial plant based burgers.
@lloydchristmas4547
@lloydchristmas4547 5 лет назад
Very valid points.
@jabom99
@jabom99 5 лет назад
Why don't you just eat real meat? It is much more sustainable and healthy and the carbon footprint is much smaller. Vegans crave meat because hominids have been sustained by meat for 2 million years. Vegans crave meat so they have to create a fake meat because they are so undernourished. That is why this has become "a thing" lately. Canada imports thousands of tons of fruit and vegetables from tropical countries contributing to air pollution, fossil fuel use, and Co2 emissions.
@johnwang9914
@johnwang9914 5 лет назад
@@jabom99 The amount of arable land, fresh water and energy needed to produce meat is an order of magnitude higher than producing food from plants. Granted, meat production has improved and the commercial meat substitutes such as impossible burger and Beyond burger have high carbon footprints due to the ingredients they use but in theory, the more we transition to plant based foods, the more secure our food supply will be as our population grows. There is also the possibility of growing meat without growing the animals themselves and that has potential for bring efficient but requires a lot more research than plant based substitutes. Your premise that the carbon footprint of meat is low in comparison to plant based food is pretty much an impossible argument to make as animals must be fed and what is it that they are fed... We can pretty much expect that not everyone will transition to eating vegetables, legumes, fruits and cereals alone so to have more of the population eating plant based foods will initially require meat substitutes. The food we eat today is nothing like the food of even just a generation ago so tastes will change, eventually what will be eaten as meat substitutes may be very different from the meats they replace just as the chicken and pork of today are nothing like what they were just sixty years ago. Even if the commercial plant based meat substitutes have relatively high carbon footprints due to non-local ingredients, the changes in tastes that they will cause will allow transitions to progressively lower carbon footprint formulations.

@@mankind9074 She just eyeballed it. But, seeing as she hasn' responded. I eyeballed it, too, and this is what I came up with: - 1.5 cups cooked black beans - 1.25 cups cooked lentils - 1.5 cups cooked mushrooms - 1.5 cups cooked chickpeas - 1 cup rolled oats Blitz it a little in the food processor -- you want to break up the pieces, not turn it to mush. - 1/4 cup of nooch. - salt, pepper, and chili flakes to taste. - (He didn't add any onion, but I always do, and I strongly recommend it. Or, use onion powder and also a little garlic powder.) - 1 cup of shredded beets - 1 TB of tapioca starch - Parsley and rosemary to taste - (I also add aboutt 1 TB of tamari or soy sauce, and a fake-beef bouillon cube -- see below -- 1 cube for about 400g of mixture. If you use bouillon cubes, which are highly seasoned, or tamari (very salty), hold off on salt, pepper, and chili flakes until you've tasted the mix.) Blitz a little, again keeping in mind that you don't want a mush -- you want distinct bits that will give a decent texture to the burger. Form them into patties (i make mine about 100 grams / 3.5 oz), and cook them in a little oil on a skillet on the stove top. Three FYIs: Because I don't use any add-ons, I put some fat in the burger itself -- a little mashed avocado helps give the mouth-feel you get from fat in a hamburger or chicken patty. If you use only black beans, bake them off 1st to get rid of some moisture (on a cookie sheet, at 200F for about 15 minutes) -- otherwise, they become mushy. (The lentils and chickpeas hold their respective textures better.) When I make black-bean burgers, I add a fake-beef bouillon cube. I use Edward's brand, which is so-so (their faux-chicken cubes are very good); another YT chef (Sauce Stache) recommends Shanggie brand, but I can't find it where I live.

Flax Seed 3/4. cup Walnuts 1/2 cup Nutritional Yeast 1 Tbsp. Tapioca Starch 1 onion chopped (small) 1/2 Tbsp. Chili Powder 1 Tbsp. Tomato Paste 1 tsp. Rosemary 1 tsp. liquid smoke 1 tsp. Braggs Ammino Acid Salt (to your taste) Black Pepper I omitted the beets I sautéed the mushrooms, onions, and garlic without oil. (added a little salt and pepper). I placed everything else in my food processor and pulsed it several times. Make sure you do not let it get too mushy. I put the mushrooms mix in a bowl and added the mix from the food processor. I sprayed my pan with a light coating of oil and placed my patted mixture in the pan. I let them cook about ten minutes on each side on medium heat. I wanted to make sure they cook a littl2e hard since the beans are soft and you are not going to get it as firm as a hamburger. They turned out great. I made 5 firm patties and served them with mashed potatoes, gravy, and corn on the cob. I had mixture left over so I formed 4 nice size balls and placed them in a freezer bag for another time.

I made these last week and got mush. I made them last night and they came out perfect. Here is where I made my mistakes. I used too many beans, should be a cup each and not the whole 15 ounce can. Also drain the beans, rinse and let dry, and don't over pulse in the Processor. Keep everything else as Chef describes and it's a very good burger. One other little thing, try and keep them out of the oven. Fry on high each side for about 3 minutes, no more than 5 minutes total. Then reduce heat to low and cook for 15 minutes on each side, turning often. The oven tends to make them crumbly. Great Burger!!
@dw999
@dw999 Год назад
@David, I'm sharing two tips for better veggie burgers: The website Minimalist Baker, in its Best Vegan Meatballs recipe, instructs us to bake the beans on a cookie sheet at a very low heat for about 15 min -- dries them out, so they don't turn to mush in the food processor, tho one still has to pulse them sparingly. And, I add a little mashed avocado to give a little of the mouth-feel you get from hamburgers or chicken patties (both of which have fat throughout the fibers). If you don't have avocado on hand, then perhaps add a little melted coconut oil or melted vegan butter ( = a fat that is solid at room temp rather than a liquid oil).

As always, this video shows that most people are really addicted to taste, not what food will do for you. This is why it is easy to copy the taste that many are use to. The good thing about plant based food is that they will taste good (depending on the preparer/cook/chef/establishment/product) and they will be healthy for simultaneously. Eating food that won't purposely increase death, cancer, chemotherapy, diseases, sickness, worms, fungus, parasites, viruses and over acidity is a win win situation.

Same with vegans on statins - I'm sure there are some out there where their body still over produces even without the meat (our bodies produce all we need btw). Studies prove the average, the trend. There will always be the outliers. Science is science and just because you love your local farmers doesn't change it any. Farmers need to do what all businesses have to do - adapt or go out of business and plant based is the way forward - if not for the animals then for all the other reasons. Your local farmer still slaughters and animal that doesn't need to be slaughtered.

I made a variation of these burgers as follows and they turned out great! 1 cup each, cooked: black beans, chickpeas, lentils, all drained and patted dry 1 cup mushrooms (water sauté for 3 min covered to release liquid, then 3 min uncovered to dry) 1/2 cup rolled oats 1/4 cup fresh beets, shredded 1/4 cup unfortified nutritional yeast 1 tsp dried parsley, or 1 Tblsp. fresh 1 tsp tapioca starch 1 Tblsp tamari 1 Tblsp. chickpea or other miso 2 tsp. cumin 2 tsp. smoked paprika 1 tsp chili powder 1 tsp. garlic powder 1 tsp liquid smoke (Colgin is vegan) Pulse all ingredients in food processor. Shape into 6, 1/2 cup patties (108g). Pan fry, bake (20 minutes, turn once), or grill. Top with vegan condiments.

It looks incredibly tasty, I am in the midst of changing my diet & removing more meat than I typically would, grain is also an issue for me so I am unsure this would work for me HOWEVER it wont stop me from trying it I doubt I would switch over to a vegan lifestyle but I have incorporated many vegan foods to my existing diet as meat really doesn't impress me anymore for many reasons but most because I am diseased & the covid vaccine has changed my good health to very bad now & meat seems to create excessive inflammation so this burger may work for me. I would have to switch out the grains & legumes in this recipe for the lowest carb grain I can find to compensate but I basically have everything else in my home. Thanks for sharing I have something new to try out.
