Your honest assessment of recruiting is refreshing. I'm glad to hear this from someone with 'real' knowledge on the subject. Too many hopefuls (& the parents) think as long as I can enter this showcase or play in this travel tournament, I'll get noticed. 'Paying' to play only gets you so far and you can't buy ability.

Thanks for being honest! As a hitting instructor, a dad had me work with his HS son... good fielder but his hitting was average. I teach a rotational MLB style swing. When he would do the drills, his bat speed, trajectory and consistency would improve, but he wouldn't dedicate himself to making those changes permanent. In his little HS world, he thought he was ok! He didn't understand that the competition is soo fierce for college level positions on teams. The dad (and him) was were more concerned about the showcases here and there. He had the talent but lacked the dedication and skill set... the scouts would have found him! Thank you, Coach, for being so frank and honest about this part of the baseball career.

In the first 2 minutes of the video is all you need to know about getting offered a scholarship or getting drafted. I was fortunate enough to get both. Matt is absolutely correct. I had an old timer tell me when I was 14-15...if you're good enough the scouts will find you. Sure enough, it happened. I was invited when I was 16 to the Phillies tryout. So....it does NOT matter about getting into showcases or making a travel team, if you're good enough, the opportunities will present themselves. Also...watch the whole video. Great stuff, Matt.

New to your channel and so far I love all the video's I've seen. As a college Coach that has recruited HS kids, what are the 2-3 things that you look for when you're recruiting a player, and the flip side what are the 2-3 things that will get a player removed from your consideration? And, have you ever gone to look at a player and have another player catch your eye? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm the father of a HS freshman who wants to play college baseball, and like a lot of teenagers he doesn't listen to Dad a lot of times...lol

@@AntonelliBaseball I need some advice on the recruiting process. My son went to a top d1 baseball camp in August 2021. At the end the head coach pulled a few players aside to talk to 1 on 1. My son was one and he talked to my son at length about how the baseball jumps off the bat, how he ran a fast 60, and much more good things. He asked what high school my son plays for etc. I have heard from plenty of coaches that my son will play in college but nothing is happening. He is a junior and truly not understanding the process. Any advice will be appreciated.

I love this video's argument. The recruitment agencies and showcases/meatmarkets have been relentless in their efforts to get our money, a great deal of our money. I think our freshman is likely to be good enough to be among the 15-17% of HS ballplayers who play at some college level. But the advice we've gotten, from two or three coaches who also recruited for a couple years, has been to target schools where he and we think he could play, where he would like to go and to initiate contact as he hones his skills and prepares for the showcases, etc down the road. Another piece of advice we've gotten is that there is a lot more money available in academic scholarships than there is in athletic scholarships and that student-athletes often garner more $ in support than athletes w/o good grades.

I've got a little brother playing baseball right now. He currently is playing up a year and has made a name for himself as the best catcher in the league without much actually coaching. He is planning to play select next season so he can get the right coaching and improve. How do we know when his skills are at that next level and start the exposure process? We don't have to worry about it yet as he is far to young to being focusing on college ball, but he is serious about baseball (more so than I was by far) and I want to know if there is something to look for.

something else about recruiting not only baseball but all college sports especially @ the D1 level, it's all about location . if a coach is deciding between 2 pitchers with identical stats and GPA. But one plays in NH and the other in CA. they will probably go with the Cali kid

why?

I don't know for sure, but my guess would be, because they figure that the one furthest from the school will choose a school closer to home. I would assume it also depends on the prestige of the school. If it's well known for baseball most likely that wouldn't factor in. Again I'm just surmising don't know for sure.

Justice Salazar hey bro, Ik this is a very old comment but I couldn’t help but to respond. The truth is, a scout will rarely ever ask you what team you play for and what their record was. A lot of scouts care more about the quality of teams you play and the tournaments you were in (it means more if you hit a double off the best pitcher in your area than going 3-4 with a dinger and 2 singles against a single A team). My cousin plays Baseball at The University of Northern Iowa and my stepdad played at Elmhurst and later went on to pitch in the royals organization and they both told me to worry about reps, obtaining the necessary skill set and qualities, and having a good attitude. If your good enough, you’ll make it. Don’t worry guy

So I understood that the player has to be good enough before getting any exposure. I play high school ball and feel as though my coaches aren't teaching me the correct way to approach and adjust my hitting. I hired a private hitting instructor last off-season. I followed his instructions and after the first few games I began to bat well. The coaches noticed that I was doing good but the rest of my team was struggling. They changed some things around and wanted to alter the whole teams mechanics at the plate (including me). One of these changes was eliminated the front foot step and instead using a heel lift. I tried to use their technique but I couldn't make good contact and lost a lot of power so I reverted back to my old swing. Even though I was hitting the ball again they told me if I wasn't going to do it right they would bench me. So my question is how do I improve my skill set when they try to generalize problems as a team and not fix each players issues? I have two years left of high school baseball and I really hope to be noticed by a college before then. I hope you can help!

I had a few classmates that played baseball in high school and I had 2-3 that were like that too where they spent money on these clinics and they weren’t that great either. That didn’t deter their parents from shelling out all that money. Part of the problem is the parents too. They are not completely honest with their kids and the kids get this big ego making them think they were playing great when they weren’t. We had this one kid that went to these clinics year after year that was a pitcher and he would completely bomb at these. He also had a very nasty and cocky attitude to boot too. Needless to say no college or the MLB recruited him and I seen him working at a drug store a few years later. His parents were the problem too-they were too blind to see that their son sucked and were desperately trying to get him a free ride to college. They didn’t want to spend money on him to get better, but they found money for them clinics, lol! Mind you, there was a batting cage that worked with high school kids to improve their game. I went there for softball and got my pitching up to 73 mph. He mellowed out and finally admitted that he wasn’t good enough and it was a waste of cash money. Sad part is he was always mean to me, but I got into the MLB before he did in a way, lol, before he did. He was mad as hell and kinda salty when he found out I worked for the Cleveland Indians and I was showing off my key card to him. It was my way of getting back at him.

How did I get recruited to division 1 and 2 baseball schools and my good friend and teammate only got calls from division 2 schools to play and he had one of the all time highest batting averages and runs scored in school history? I was a top many categories, but was only first in school history in walks, doubles, triples. Had second most saves. I never understood why some guys didnt get the attention they deserved. And my buddy from a rival high school led the league and possibly the state in RBIs, batting average, obp, hr, runs, and stolen bases. He was phenomenal. Batted over .600 senior season, hit well over .500 junior season. His team was a state tournament qualifier and somehow he got overlooked by a lot of division 1 schools his coach tried to help him get in with. He wound up going to a total non baseball powerhouse school (East Carolina University) and had a shit career there. Quit after his 3rd season, but what a waste of talent and a total miss by the college recruiters during that time in the state of North Carolina.

I’m going into my senior year and I played at first baseball for my first time. I was good at it but my sophomore year we had a different coach and he putted me in the out field. I just got back into baseball my sophomore year. Do I still have a chance to play in college?

So if your not top 5 player in the state you live chances are 0 for division one college?
@AntonelliBaseball
@AntonelliBaseball 6 лет назад
It depends on your state. Probably more than 5 play D 1, especially in south where probably dozens play D1 every year. Thanks for watching and commenting!

How important do you think travel ball is?
@AntonelliBaseball
@AntonelliBaseball 7 лет назад
It depends who you play for. I think if you play for a good team with good coaches it is very important for improving as a player and also the exposure you can get. It has to be a combination of the both to really make it worth it

Antonelli Baseball I'm a freshman in high school and pitch with a fastball in the 80s and a Wipeout slider and curve and I bat .500 in a division 4 high school any tips to kinda start my recruiting now?
@jeffk3929
@jeffk3929 6 лет назад
Grant Miller, start a profile on Field Level. It is free and you can get alot of exposure on there as you can upload videos of you playing. Colleges will follow you on there. My son used it and received a college scholarship as a pitcher at a D1 school in TX. He is a freshman.

Hi Matt, my son is an incoming Freshman and just turned 14 last week. He's throwing 72-73 with good control and he's a 6' lefty. Do you think it's worth his time to go to showcases yet?
@AntonelliBaseball
@AntonelliBaseball 7 лет назад
I think it's still too early. Sophomore year is probably a good time to start. Good luck to him!

When did you know you wanted to leave Holy Cross to pursue this career? How did the recruits you had recruited react?
@AntonelliBaseball
@AntonelliBaseball 7 лет назад
I left more because of family. My wife had just given birth and I wasn't home much at all. Decided I wanted to be home more. This allowed me to stay in baseball but have more control over my schedule. Still miss coach college, especially with the guys at HC. Thanks for watching and commenting!

send lots of emails, like 100s. Take you SATs, have good grades and be polite. Aside from having recruitable stats, those are the bigger factors. Attitude and grades.

Do college coaches look at height for a main part of recruiting??

Some do. Depends on the position also and the coach. Thanks for watching and commenting!!!

One thing you didn't touch on is the financial burden on parents and special Lee a single parent which I am right now my son is a junior and not bragging he is good I've been told by his high school coach and his coaches on his travel ball team but it's hard to pay the hundreds of dollars that the showcases asked for so what is a single parent to do it's not fair to the child

Have the skills? That sounds like any number of high school “rock bands” worried about band names and gimmicks instead of learning how to tune their damned instrument.
