By dumping you mean loosen backfoot wheight right? More Weight on front foot as seen in the video? To extent back leg with bodywheight 70 percent on front foot and make fins/wheels able slide?

I spend a big part of my life landlocked, and only get to surf the lakes in the winter and the oceans on trips once every year or two. Time on waves therefore is extremely scarce. BUT now that I know this nifty little bit of info that I can take my skateboard (longboard trucks/wheels on a regular deck) to the local skatepark to practice pumping down the line - I'll be surfing faster and faster every year baby!!

So the Carve board by Brad Gerlach isn't as realistic as the Smoothstar? I was considering getting a Carve board with the inflatable wheels.
@SmoothStarSurf
@SmoothStarSurf 5 лет назад
@@cnghiem67 Carve boards are great, you can go rail-to-rail but you need a hill or slope - the turns are not very critical. You also can't drive from the back of the board because the trucks aren't fixed. If you want to carve down a hill, they are great. SmoothStar is more of a responsive feel, much more like surfing, you can drive off the back foot with a critical or wider arcing turn. In summary, very different products.

I love the idea of cross training with skateboards. I'm at what's probably considered intermediate (fluently popping up, surfing green waves, bottom and top turns) and I'm starting to progress onto learning cutbacks and more effective speed generation, which is where I think a board like this would come in extremely useful. I ride a shortboard, and I've seen people using both the normal skateboard, and longboards for cross training for shortboards. What are are your opinions on both of these types of boards? Out of all of the boards (if you were recommending a skateboard for cross training for surfing to a close friend), which would you recommend? I will be strongly basing my purchase on your advice as you are obviously both great surfers, and have experience with skateboard cross training.
@HowtoRip
@HowtoRip 5 лет назад
Firstly thanks for trusting our advice. We have tried many cross training boards over the years, and without a doubt our favourite is a SmoothStar. They are the closest thing to surfing and will definitely help you with practicing your speed generation and turning technique (cutbacks, bottom turns, top turns, etc...)

I can see a perfectly good bowl/pool in the skatepark, which I think is way better for surf practice than a half pipe. The curvature of the wall mimics the way a wave pushes to shore, which makes speed generating feel more similar to what it is like in the ocean. Most bowls also force you to go both frontside and backside (depending on the shape) which may seem frustrating at first, but only a few hours of practice will make it come like second nature. Edit: Sorry if it sounds negative, I do love the show and just like you are trying to improve my surfing I hope you will try this and improve yours.

@SmoothStarSurf 5 лет назад
Good question and comment. Its actually Ryan in this video. SmoothStar always recommends helmets. But if you look at the riding they are doing, it is nothing like normal skateboarding. They are showing body movement - compression/extension in surfing. They are not moving fast at all - they are not going on any jumps. So the risk in riding a SmoothStar is a lot less - you can simulate the surf feel on land and do not have to ride at high speeds.

@diogogoncalves5549
@diogogoncalves5549 4 года назад
No. I've used one for a several time and they will induce your weight position and foot movement in error. In a ripstick you, want or not, will twist the skate to turn, this doesnt happen on surfing, and the ripstick carves way to easy, that doesnt happen either. There's several brands besides smoothstar and cheaper, you have surfskate, miller, etc..

Never heard a surf coach that says this. SmoothStar is always preferred because it is more responsive to body movement. If you can find a surf coach that has tried both and doesn't prefer SmoothStar for surf simulation, we'll send you a free board. The guy at How to Rip have tried it and jumped off it straight away.

Shame the smooth star is such an expensive board! £280! Must get myself a loan and make skateboards for a living! Joke! No really, I'll have to stick with the long board a friend has LENT me! Not so curveable-carveable, but not too shabby and still great fun. Great vid though as always. Thanks again.
@SmoothStarSurf
@SmoothStarSurf 5 лет назад
Hi mate. They are not quite the price you say in UK but SmoothStar cannot be the cost of a normal skateboard. We have invented technology that simulate the surf feel. As the video above suggests, the board has a "smooth" transition from rail-to-rail. It also has a spring inside that mimics the resistance of a wave face. We also pay legal fees every year so we don't get copied. Yes, we have a patent in the UK. Longboards can still provide some benefits to riders but not quite the same surf simulation as a product like ours. Hope this helps. Oh, and just to let you know the people behind SmoothStar are surfers not millionaires businessman.

Sure it's a good board my friend, I have no doubt! Relative to a candy bar, I'm sure it's worth it's weight in gold. However, I may not be the only person who is as skint as F... at the moment because, whatever, things aren't easy right now, but heck, I got a friend they lent me a longboard, it's a lot of fun even if it aint a smooth star! Millionaires buisnessmen! Ahhhh! ; 'To touch a nerve!' As they say! That's funny! Anyway, Thank God for friends because money and the 'latest thing' still 'aint everything, thank God! I wish you well! Good luck to you-I'm sure it's a sweet board- and have a nice ride and have a good day! AWS

@diogogoncalves5549
@diogogoncalves5549 4 года назад
@@vadimmiloserdov4962 Never heard of "slider". I use a carver, turns very well but you want to be able to make the tail slide anyway like you would do carving on a wave. For that you need to relief weight on the back putting it foward and use your back foot to slide the tail, helped by upper body movement. So smooth star or carver it's the same to be honest

$360AUD NOT 360USD. There are plenty of cheep choices if you want to just want to cruise around but if you want to improve and progress your surfing, SmoothStar is always preferred by surf coaches. If you want the closest feel to surfing, there is no comparison. So in answer to your question, you need the spring in the front turning mechanism as this simulates the steepness of the wave when you release from a turn. If you don't use a spring in the engineering, it is just a wiggle board.

Unfortunately the issue of having a opposite stances in surf and skate is quite normal. SmoothStar first got this issue about 9 years ago. It was very strange and we thought the best solution was to speak to a surf coach and ask for advice. Unfortunately the coaches that we spoke to didn’t have much of a solution except don’t worry about it and let the student just have fun. Another 6 months later at a Junior surf competition in Australia had this issue. He maturely released that his only way to improve his surfing using SmoothStar was to skate the same way he surfed. He couldn’t “pop-up” on his surfboard, it just felt too weird. So he forced himself to ride SmoothStar the same way he surfed. He was amazed how quickly he was able to change over from regular skater to Goofy on SmoothStar. He said it was because SmoothStar felt so much like surfing so it was just easier. 6 months later, he said he couldn’t ride regular skating anymore, he had converted completely and never looked back. The mother took the advice off the 11 year old and reported that it only took her son just under a week of riding SmoothStar, he didn’t like it at first but even her child was a amazed how quickly he converted over. We later found out that even some professional surfers have the same issue. Even 2014/2018 World Champion Gabriel Medina even skates natural and surfs goofy. So if it happens to World Champions, it can happen to anyone. So in summary, the advice that we give surfers with this issue: Force yourself to ride the same stance as your surf. You will find it easier to fix your SmoothStar skate stance rather than your surf because of the pop-up. Ride your SmoothStar for 2 weeks everyday for minimum 30 minutes. SmoothStar have given this advice many times since they first came across it 9 years ago. Surfers are amazed themselves how quickly they transition over. It is mainly due to one part of the body being stronger than the other, it is just a matter of retraining the brain. The habit normally occurs at a very young age when kids first skated. Then it became the normal thing to do.
