Damn man, that looked badass before the clear coat. Still looks great. I've used this on my truck wheels and it held up okay.

The high-end chrome paints use a primer and then a coat of gloss black first. Doing the same might make it glossier. Also if you're having issues with paint flaking virtually guaranteed your surface prep is to blame. Has to be absolutely clean and prepped so the paint can grab onto it.

Pssst.... I sprayed this 10 years ago and all clear coats chemically eat the shine. It also needs 8 days in warmth to dry if rattle can spraying then micro cloth rub off the dust paint that dries on way to surface. It is best flooded on surface so vertical near impossible. The only thing with this or better airbrush chrome alcohol based paint is clear floor wax over it after curing days through an airbrush in light coats, acrylic wax is hard after drying and you can polish out mar marks.

Honestly, this video turned out to be waaaay more informative than i was expecting. I almost bought that very spray paint last night. While looking in the paint isle, i had a new idea and went with a different color. Lucky for me! Their copper finish spray paint rubs off too, but it looks nice for things not handled very often. I called Rustoleum tech support. They said it’s intended for interior use only and anything that touches it will tarnish the shine.

Use water based polyurethane gloss varnish first, brush on or spray, let that dry, then use the krylon clear coat spray. Problem solved. You'll have that nice mirror finish still.

I never mix my brands. I've found this makes a difference. Will have to try the chrome spray on my Sporty.

You are lucky the Krylon didn't ripple over the Rustoleum. They usually don't like each other, especially Krylon over Rustoleum primer. Never tried the chrome & clear like you did though yet. Looks good !!

Lol... Ive been rebuilding my late brothers snowmobile for 2yrs now. Stripped and repainted plenty of it. Engine compartment engine brakes and drive. Redone suspension and added my own spin. It was a 3 wheels tensioner rear boggie setup. Where i turn it to a 4 wheel setup. Been thinking about chrome paint for awhile. Didn't know how it would turn out.

You'll never clear coat chrome paint. I've done the same shit in my beetle. Screwed the chrome. Striped again, painted and let dry in the sun. Perfect.

I found that so called chrome rustoleum paint dulls any where it is touched even when it has cured for days .... then if you do clear it .... it just dulls to a silver paint look .... better off just using a bright aluminium paint because the aluminium paint seems much more durable then that fake chrome paint ..... This is what I found when painting car parts with it and seems from watching your video the same kinda experience happened to you .... I found just using a rustoleum aluminium paint was better in the end result .... Like your car in the background it is sweet !!!

Next time instead of clear coat do 1 light coat followed by 80% coat 15 minutes later and then do final coat 100% at about 45 minutes. After dry for at least 2 days, 5-7 even better. Then wet sand 1000 grit and polish. Add wax of choice after 30 days.

What is the exact spray that you used? I assume that it is for exterior also?

The crinkle look on the frame is a reaction from using different brands. Every brand name has alittle different chemical composition. It's called crazing.

Try the MAX2K two part clear. It is a special spray can that is a two part system. Fuel proof!

Between each coats your to wipe the chrome dust off with a microfiber rag then spray another coat then wipe again, then Only a 2K clearcoat only

I have thought about baking the paint. To try getting g it to not rub off. I haven't bothered with it again.

The crinkling comes from not letting the Rustoleum base paint dry a good week or more. If you let it dry a week you won't get crinkling.

I watched this video, decided to do my swingarm, looked great but never cured right. Its was not very durable at all for a swingarm so I sandblasted it off and went with regular silver. Maybe it would be ok with a automotive clear in a spray gun so its thick enough.

something I learned about that paint is to let it dry and cure before you touch it then it is not so fragile. I would let it cure for a week... its a slow process...but it helped. I tried the clearcoat thing after the paint dried in the initial first 24 hours and it turned sorta yellow so i started all over again and waited the second time with no clear coat...

I tried many mirror Chrome finishes and could not get anything to look skinnier than a matte silver. Nowhere near actual chrome for some reason. No reflection at all. Anybody know why? I tried on gloss black with primer and everything else I could think of

It chemical reactions. It happened to me on Michigan state quad i did. Its hard to paint with can anf tape off certain sections with the small window. I let mine dry for 2 days and still had that reaction.

I haven’t seen the outcome of your clear coat attempt, but you should’ve tested it on a scrap first. My experience is that it actually didn’t want to stick to the metallic and ran down like oil. The clear I used was labeled “Automotive Quality.”

Can it Rustoleum Chrome paint be used on brake calipers

I never liked rattle can spray paint in chrome. It looks alright when you first spray it on almost like a bright aluminum color, but once you rub or buff it... it will discolor and dull right out even when you follow the instructions. I believe they now have better products for diy chroming if you look on ebay.

Did you sand the chrome before clearing? I'm asking because I have a gold chrome sprayed bike frame that I'm planning to clear and wondering if sanding it will destroy the chrome effect.

I have used it and let it sit in the direct sunlight and afterward I was able to handle it without any issues all I can say is you must not have let it completely cure between coats

*What you wanna do with this paint is spray it nice and shiny with 4 light coats like dude did in this vid. Important part is using a heat gun to heat and dry the paint between coats and after the final coat. Just hover the heat gun over the entire wet paint surface moving the gun constantly and not holding it in one spot. Then paint will be shiny, dry and hard.*

I had that "crinkle" bulls*** happen to me when I tried to paint my first car with Rustoleum. Basically, it's not necessarily the brand, as much as it is that the new paint is acting like paint stripper to the existing paint. Spray paint has a solvent-based carrier, and that's what happens when you apply solvent to wet paint... it removes it. I actually emailed Rustoleum, REALLY PISSED because this happened. I ended up blowing off the whole situation, however, I later realized what had happened. My paint job got splotchy because I painted in direct sunlight and therefor I couldn't keep it as wet as I needed to get an even top coat. Basically, it didn't have time to self-level before it flashed. Anyway, I decided to fix it by lightly sanding and then recoating... easy right?? Hell no. Thank god I only tested on my hood. Even though I waited the full 48 hours the can recommends, IT STILL SPIDERED! (This is what I sent the nasty-gram to Rustoleum about) Even after the 48 hours, the paint had not cured ALL THE WAY THRU. If I had not sanded it, it would have worked fine. But sanding it sort of "opened up a scab" and exposed non-cured paint. The moral of the story is this: You have to recoat (or clear coat) within the amount of time given on the can. If you miss the window, you are applying solvent to dry-to-the-touch but not-yet-fully-cured paint and you are risking "removing" the existing coat. So either get it done within the specified window, or wait for the full cure time before messing with it. And per my hard-learned lesson, don't necessarily trust the cure time on the can, especially if you intend to sand it at all before recoating. Knowing what I know now, if I was gonna sand and recoat spray paint, I'd wait a MINIMUM of a week before doing so. Or if possible, wait the cure time, sand it, and wait the cure time again and paint it. That way the freshly opened "wound" would have time to cure as well. After a LOT of practice, I can actually rattle-can an ENTIRE CAR with Rustoleum, and it looks fantastic. The car I'm driving right now has a Metallic Gold paint job and people SHIT when I tell them it's Walmart rattle cans...

I bought some easy chrome to paint my helm on my yacht will do a vid as soon as i get it. But for an off road vehical i could make that same bracketin 316 stainless steel and polish it to a mirror shine.

You should have used a Rust Oleum clear if they have one. Not good to mix manufactures. Also maybe try some heat to bake the paint. That might cure your durability problems. Clear coat basically just gives a base coat paint a glossy surface. There was no need to clear the metallic paint as rust Oleum themselves said not to clear coat it. It probably just needs a proper drying time or to be baked on.

How long did you let it set up before touching it?

Yea I know what your talking about the chrome rubbing off and I tried coating to but it kinda work if you apply it lightly it does ok.

I did a review on Amazon regarding Rustoleum silver paints years ago. They don't harden well. The gold , copper, and other colors do fine but their aluminum, silver, chrome are all crap. Do not use them. They are the worst paints Rustoleum makes. They need to rethink their formula.

Every single stage metallic spray paint will dull over time because the metallic powder in them gets dirty and contaminated with the binder. Once that happens you can't fix it. Clearing will dull the finish, but maybe not as dull as it would had you not cleared it. Catch 22.

i used the same paint and it looked grey no chrome look to it at all.

Should have painted it gloss black the overlaid the metallic untill you get that chrome look.

RustOleum takes forever to dry sometimes still slightly tacky/soft after 24 hours. That's why I avoid it whenever I can. Krylon is dry in ten minutes.

I like the video 👌. I had the same problem with the chrome paint. Try it again next time let the paint cure for two weeks then use an oil based exterior high gloss polyurethane with a hardner. The chrome paint won't react to the oil. You see both the chrome paint ( Rust-Oleum spray can) and the clear have the same solvent. By using the oil base with a spray ( gun) will not react. And you can also use water base too. I make the Terminator robot replicas and skulls out of fiberglass and the bodies out of tin and aluminum. I've tried everything to make it look chrome. I was going to try the new wet chrome spray system but the cost is crazy. Good luck dude!

You didn't let the green cure long enough before applying the clear. I wouldn't recommend krylon anything.
