Great lesson, Nathan! Surely sounds great and very melodic compared to thinking of Dorian ideas over the minor one chord. I know it took me a long time to think the major 7 over a minor one chord. Luckily it's been in my ear for a couple years and now don't know how I lived with my previous technique on minor chords.

Thank you for the link to this video, Nathan. One thing I was confused about: Did you mean that when we see a m7 chord that we should think of it as a m6 instead?
@NathanBortonMusic
@NathanBortonMusic 7 месяцев назад
I think it depends on the content. If you want to just play the "tonic minor" sound then yes, think of it as m6. If you want to play the minor chord as part of the chord progression then playing it as a minor 7th (implying dorian or mixolydian of the V chord) could be good. Honestly, it's up to you. It's just good to have different options for different sounds!

Excellent video once again Nathan. I was wondering why a minor sixth chord has a #6 instead of the natural 6? Is it just convention, or are we simply assuming the m6 is the subdominant of the parent scale: e.g. Am6 is from the G major scale in jazz to get a more interesting sound?
@NathanBortonMusic
@NathanBortonMusic 11 месяцев назад
Hi Rick. Good to hear from you and thanks for your question. The raised sixth is to create a tonic minor sound. What this means is that there are not naturally any notes in the scale that want to pull to another note. If we have Ab in there instead of A, then it would sound less stable and thus lose that "tonic" feeling. However, you will notice that in the sixth diminished scale we add a #5 tone. This not only adds more pull to the stable sixth degree, but allows us to play the dominant chord of our key within the sound of the scale. Hopefully that makes sense and helps? Really it comes down to which sound is more stable.

@user-cd3tq9ye2p 5 месяцев назад
you can switch from f to g melodic minor or use the major scale f dorian to g phrigian. or f dorian to g dorian.

switching scales is nice , dorian can be moved. common thing in modal jazz
