In today's lesson I'm going to talk about the key to playing solo jazz guitar which lines in the most important part of a tune: the melody. We will cover how to learn a melody, then ways that we can build up our melody to create a solo guitar piece.

Great lesson. I’ve been playing this tune as a chord melody given to me by the great unsung player, Remo Palmieri, who played on several of Charlie Parker & Dizzy’s earliest recordings. Remo had impeccable taste and was a harmony master.

I know this lesson is a bit longer than normal, but I think playing a melody (like we covered in the lesson) is a huge step forward to playing in this style! Also I apologize for not listing the swing rhythms, that was a mistake! They are just the ones played in the etude instead of the roots. If you want more ideas for swing rhythms, check out my lesson on that topic: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XRc7Vp-F1gE.html

This is a great video. On my channel I post solo jazz performances and was tinkering with doing a similar lesson.. you’ve already nailed it and I even picked up some cool ideas that in the last 20 years I just hadn’t really thought about much! Well done and thank you!!

Exactly! Find a vocal version of the song to learn melody. My go to is usually Frank Sinatra or Nat King Cole

Great start. I'd love to see more on solo guitar as I've been pursuing it. I can do "chord melody style" for the heads, but the improvisation has been difficult. Your videos helpful on this aspect.

very well broken down concepts, thanks! wondering if you have any other lessons like this where you break down a tune. If not, will you be making more?

I do have other lessons breaking down tunes, but not like this one in terms of solo guitar. I some videos covering Stella By Starlight, Boliva, Confirmation and Donna Lee... for what I can remember! I'll try and make more solo guitar videos in the future!

Just great teaching style. First the bass, then a chord ....then harmonize the melody etc ... 💙 . Just curious, did you learn in this fashion? 🤔 Of course you have gone on to do a MBA I suppose. But there's something about your teaching which is so demystifying, yet brief! Congratulations 🎊 on very accomplished instruction.

Not bad. You covered most stuff. One thing you left out however which most jazz professionals agree with is the importance of knowing the words. Knowing the words can help you with syncopation, it can help you figure out tricky melodies that are not falling right on the beat and mostly will help you develop your own style
@NathanBortonMusic
@NathanBortonMusic 10 месяцев назад
Totally agree! I did link an early recording of this song which is of course a vocal song. I was assuming that the learn would learn it from that recording, and just because of the time it would take, they would learn the lyrics by listening. That's at least how it works for myself. I also focus more on the syllables of the words than the actual words (expect for meaning). This, in my opinion, helps more with phrasing than memorizing lyrics. Thanks for your comment!
