We have always had tile and a clear glass shower door. Both my husband and I use a squeegee after every shower. Never have a problem with soap scum. My shower looks just like new because we both take good care to squeegee after every shower. I have not had any problems for 12 years. Shower still looks like new.
I was struggling to get soap scum off my shower doors with just vinegar and water and elbow grease. It wasn’t working! I found this video online, made up a solution of half vinegar, half Dawn and I was STUNNED at how great and easy it worked!!! Just had to let you know! Thank you!!!
After deep cleaning your shower, use a "Ceramic Coating" typically used for car paintwork. I applied this on our shower 2 years ago and the glass still looks brand new today. Not 1 single water mark or soap scum.
I started towel drying my shower after each use to prevent buildup. I've found we are more likely to do that than squeegee, and it gets ALL the moisture out of the shower!
Thank you for that tip. I used to spray with vinegar and/or use my squeegee but my husband absolutely HATES the smell of vinegar. I'm going to use a microfiber cloth from now on and follow your advice. Have a great one sweetie :)
@@AnnaKaize mix in several drops of essential oil (whatever you all both like) per bottle plus diluting the vinegar with water if you’re not already doing that. Hopefully that’s helpful. 😊
@@nonnieTerribonjour ! 😌
I have been fighting soap scum problems for a few months using $$ OTC cleaning products. I watched your video and tried it out on my glass shower door. I saw an immediate removal of the soap scum and it was the least inexpensive thing I have tried. Thank you for this cleaning tip.
We always squeegee our shower after use (last one to shower does the job) and the wipe down with a good micro fibre cloth to make sure round the taps and corners are dried and I only clean the shower not even monthly just to clean the grooves where the shower door runs (we live in a hard water area), sooo much easier and it always looks so nice and clean and takes less than 5 minutes 😃✨✨
Great vlog Melissa. I’ve had a squeegee in our shower forever and it takes a few seconds to wipe down the glass and walls. I’ve never had to scrub/ spend lots of time cleaning this as a result. We also have a built in water softener which means there’s no hard water / limescale build up as a result which also helps. They are an investment but worth it if you live in a hard water area
I have an amazing cleaning lady that comes every two weeks but I work at keeping things together when she's not here. We have well water (HARD water) and get build up everywhere - I'm forever soaking our shower fixtures in the vinegar mixture baggie and am losing the battle with the hard water build up on my black hall bath sink fixtures. Love all your suggestions and appreciate them greatly!!
Bon Ami will take the hard water spots off. Don’t use on the brass coated fixtures. It will wear it off. Bon Ami or Brillo soap pads work on the chrome fixtures, for sure!
My mom taught me to use baking soda on any surface that was easily scratched because it doesn't scratch. I even use it on glassware and ceramic ware because IT DOESN'T SCRATCH.
Yeah sodium bicarbonate is only 2.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, the same as your fingernail, so it basically won't scratch anything you can't scratch with your fingernails.
Oh my goodness-that soap and vinegar recipe really works!! I have been struggling with hard water stains for years and they finally are off. THANK YOU!!!
Thanks! This motivated me to finally clean the scum off my glass shower doors 😅 I tried using baking soda and vinegar before, and that wasn't successful, so I lost motivation, but the dish soap and vinegar mixture worked better!
I take whatever citris I eat and put in large glass jar and poor vinegar to top of them in a spray bottle after 24 hours soak I fill up and leave about 2 inches to add water like 1/3 2 TB dawn mix and spray on works awesome on stove kitchen and bath but not on stainless steal or painted surfaces on non porous surfaces
I visited a friend in the Netherlands who had me squeegee the shower after each use (eye roll) because she was selling the house. But now that I have a big glass shower like the one in the video I use the squeegee. It has stayed looking new.
I have shower curtains on all three of my showers. Glass stays clean. I take shower curtain down from time to time and wash on delicate cycle in washing machine and put it in the dryer with a couple of bath towels on low heat to dry. Works perfectly.
I tried it today! It worked perfectly. The vinegar and dish washing liquid worked better and much more effectively than two Clorox with Bleach products that I have.
We renovated our bathroom 5 months ago (took out the tub and in a shower!), and I am bent on keeping it looking beautiful. Thank you for this video. I have a squeegee in our shower too! It has a hook on the end, so I hang it on the bar soap holder attached to the shower system. My mom kept telling me I had to dry the shower every time with a towel, so instead I got the squeegee. Less work with a squeegee, don't have to rub another load of laundry! Takes 30-45 seconds with the squeegee, and I get some squat exercises in!! I'll try your vinegar and dish soap recipe to clean any soap scum that sneaks in. Iike the idea of baking soda and dishsoap for my tile floor because it's glazed. What say you? Thanks in advance!
Barkeepers Friend MORE Spray + Foam is THE best thing for soap scum! I just used it yesterday and it took me mere minutes to clean our glass shower doors with minimal elbow grease. HIGHLY recommend ALL Barkeepers Friend products!
Can confirm although didn't know they had a bath product. I use the powder on my white glass cook top. It has been the only thing that will get the cooked on black off with a little elbow grease. Easy off didn't even touch it but bar keepers friend did the trick.
i use the daily spray at each shower and it works well! thank you. By the way, I fell in the stairs in my house last Christmas. I was then injured and stuck lying down for weeks. This is where i discover your channel and fell completely addicted 😅 I applied a lot of your tricks and suggestions and change completely my way of cleaning my house. I appreciate also the evolution of the family and your personnel stories. I just recently finished watching all your videos !! yes yes ! I think i could participate to a CMS quiz 😊
I keep reading that acidic products shouldn’t be used on ceramic tile because it’s bad for the grout, so vinegar in my shower is a no for me. My DIY daily shower spray is 2/3c rubbing alcohol, 1C filtered water, 1T Dr Bronners Sal Suds and 20 drops of tea tree oil and 10 drops of lemon EO. It’s doing the trick. Helps that I squeegee every time!
@@creuvette29 no, it can’t because the ph is so different. White vinegar has a ph of 2.4 (very acidic) and rubbing alcohol is neutral, somewhere between 6 and 8 (water is neutral at 7). Then consider that more than half the solution is water (neutral) and the Sal Suds is quite alkaline which will bring the final product into the alkaline territory, which is what (unsealed) grout likes. Btw I can’t take credit for the recipe of my shower cleaner, it’s based on the one by My Messy German Life.
I'm absolutely delighted. It works brilliantly and better than anything I've tried before. It also cleans the silicone grout between the glass shower and floor tiles as well as the silicone grout in the corners of the shower cubicle. Could we have a cleaning video for the grout in the wall and floor tiles please?
I have a wipe-down towel I wipe everything down with after each shower. Wash it with the other towels. I haven't had to scrub down shower in over 4 years. It was too much grief to replace the shower, I didn't want to mess around moving forward. I have no glass though, might not do as well as a squeegee on glass, but I think it would be drier. Maybe squeegee on glass, towel for non-glass areas for best results.
We are a family of four and we always shower one right after the other so only the last person has to squeegee. And we only have to ventilate once. That also saves a lot of money for central heating and CO2.
Melissa, I'm overwhelmed by the amount of mess in my home. I really want to deep clutter the entire house but my planning is very poor and ineffective. Currently, there are five people in my house. Can you make a video on deep cleaning a whole house including every single corner
Love Melissa's video content as well! Great products and advice. We squeegee everytime but bought a wide squeegee at Princess Auto (Cdn tire has them as well) and it covers 3 times the area so much faster!
In general, abrasive things are not good for glass, as they can scratch. Eraser sponges are all at least somewhat abrasive iirc, and some of them even have extra-abrasive sides. That's not to say you can't use ANYTHING abrasive on glass, just that you should test in a hidden area first to make absolutely certain it is not damaging it.
First for glass panels in shower, check to see if mfgr put a specific coating on glass. If you can. On my shower cannot use some common household liquids.
I squeegee after EVERY shower and dry the glass portions with a glass microfiber cloth and the tile walls and floor with a super absorbing microfiber cloth and never has to remove soap scum🤗
I have an old shower tub combo and I hate cleaning it. Yes, soap scum. I’m never sure of what to use in the walls and tub??? No glass at all. We have a shower curtain.
Excellent video! I’ve been looking for a non-toxic way to clean my shower after I shower. I will definitely try the vinegar-and-water recipe. I have back issues and cannot easily bend or extend to clean my shower stall so, yes, we clean it after every use (mostly!) and then thoroughly clean it every week or two.
Soap dissolves grease and oil. Soap scum is none of those. The only thing that dishsoap does is create a thicker viscosity for the vinegar to adhere longer. Why people use soap to dissolve soap boggles my mind. If you have faucets that are encrusted with soap scum, saturate strips of paper towels and let sit on the bad areas for half an hour to an hour. The soap scum will come right off. I spray my shower walls with vinegar and then mix salt, baking soda, and a small amount of water to form a paste. Then I scrub it off in a circular motion and rinse. We squeegee our glass shower doors every day, which helps them stay clean and clear. But to deep clean the rest, I use the method above - no dish soap! Also, using shower gel is better than a soap bar for preventing soap scum.
Hey, thank you so much my best friend‘s 19th birthday is on Saturday, September 14 and my tiara had glue on it and myai said to use soap and it like in my tiara doing much better
The essential oil also removes soap scum in the water/detergent combo. Sanitizes too. Kills off tinea on the shower base. Anti-viral (particularly Lavender or Eucalyptus essential oils - Thursday Plantation is fine to use) - Here in Australia one can buy larger quantities of Eucalyptus in a water soluble format as well as undiluted. Brand called Bosistos. Very recommended to add a cap full to the spray bottle when someone in the house isn't well with a 'virus'.
@@lisamanetta9567IMO,I believe she's talking about the fact that when you use an eraser sponge, it immediately starts coming apart and makes another mess to clean up
Ive been using Dawn and a scratch free sponge for years and it works great for this OCD person. I will give it a shot with the addition of white vinegar and aee if it makes it even better ❤
Every member of my family have to squidgee and paper towel the walls and squidgee only the floor after showering. This will prevent mould build up too. Soap scum still forms on the bottom of the glass over time so I use an Australian product called Mr Sheen for glass, wood surfaces etc. Leave it on for about half an hour then wipe down with a micro fibre cloth then rinse and squidgee. It’s perfect.
Dawn 4X dish soap and the scotch brite blue/white eraser works great as well. Dial soap and other bar soaps need to be cleaned at least every two weeks to maintain and not build up. If Dial bar soap has built up over the years, It will take a lot of soaking scrubbing to remove it, because it is like dry powdery wax when you scrape it off. I have found that spraying straight Pine-Sol brand, Pine-Sol, softens it. Sometimes you have to remove it and layers if it’s been on for years. Depending on the top shower, you have, cheap oven cleaner worked well. Test a spot first. I must be properly ventilated and use gloves, so it will not burn your hands and cause cancer.
This is the problem I have and I have been trying since we did our renovation to clean our bathroom tile and literally nothing works and now I have build up. Any advice on how to remove it and scrape it up? :(
I’m thinking about trying an automotive spray sealant called sonax spray and seal. If this works then no kind of buildup could ever cling to any of my shower again until the sealant wore off, which could probably take a very long time.
For some time, due to mental health and physical constraints, my shower wasn't cleaned as regularly as it should have been. I then began using a squeegy but could not bend or squat properly to doe the floor so I switched to using a towel which seemed to work but I still have an issue with bending etc. I then found a small head mop with extending handle and microfibre removable pad and that has been a game changer. I don't have to bend and just squeeze out the pad, using a second one if necessary and reuse them a few times before machine washing. The glass and tiles are cleaned without effort. I do have some permanent hard water stains on the glass but it is clean which is the main thing.
I moved into a lovely cottage that was built 3 years ago, the shower looks like yours in the video, very pretty, although the glass door has hardened water stains, I've tryed a few times white vinager & dawn soap, seem to help Iin a few areas, water stains still there. Don't want to use baking soda, this is a rental, I would feel terrible to scratch the glass, any thoughts? Thank you..
Are use vinegar in my hair when I take a shower and then I spray my shower walls with the same vinegar I use in my hair. And then after I’m done, I squeegee my walls my shower floor and my shower doors every time. My shower is always clean. Just thought I’d share that.❤
I have a very small amount of rust around the drain in my bathroom sink and on the shower drain cover. I am not comfortable using harsh chemicals. Would rather use DIY. Any ideas? No I don’t like to clean my shower/tub! Would rather vacuum and mop with microfiber cloth mop. Nice watch!!!
The problem with the squeegee is you need to do that right after showering with the water off, so you're standing there for a few minutes naked, and cold cleaning the glass. Honestly, I hate it, I sometimes do clean the glass that way, but it's a pain. I would love to have a walk in tiled shower enclosed, like you walk in turn the corner, and shower, no glass doors, but I can't afford the remodel.
I wander if applying ClearView automotive windscreen protectant to the shower glass would make a difference. It is designed to flow down water instead of beading and holding water drops. I think it is just alcohol based so perhaps just apply some rubbing alcohol once a week or so will suffice. Another thought .. standard car wax or those fancy ceramic liquid layers. The soap studs would have no chance of adhering to the glass to begin with 😎
These are great tips! I have glass and Travertine! We bought the place because dang Travertine looks elegant! But holy cow, like you said, you can't use anything normal on it. If you have any suggestions, I'm all ears. I use a cleaner made for porous stone. Every now and then, I'll just use Tilex to smack the mold into submission. And I'm supposed to reseal the shower, but that hasn't happened in a hot minute. And i do run the fan after a shower.
I squeegee my shower after every shower. I haven’t had to scrub it at all. I notice the spots around the handle that I can’t get to are the only spots that have soap scum
Baking soda and vinegar are alkali and acid respectively. They are pH opposites and should not be substitutable with each other. What is the chemistry at play here? If it doesn't matter which you mix with the dish soap then is plain dish soap enough?
Thanks for your helpful videos. My shower is a mix of materials so cleaning seems impossible. I have glass, natural stone, ceramic tile, and glass tiles. I would appreciate any tips on the best product (DIY) to clean my shower as a whole.
What is the best way to clean a jetted Jacuzzi tub? We are in our late 60's and early 70's and don't use the jetted Jacuzzi tub, but we do take showers in the same area. Problem is, the jets collect soap scum and have that orange and sometimes black mold growing in the jet alcoves. Our housekeeper doesn't do a very good job of cleaning them, it seems.
steps: 1: KingsFord lighter fluid, allow to dry to a powder. 2: When the remaining stuff is powder. Spray with PB blaster using a metal wire brush. Wipe off with paper towel. Congrats, your tub is white again
Life is multisensory. Aside from tasting the tub for cleanliness... the sense of feel from the customer was enlightening. Wax that tub when your done and next time cleaning is even easier. Just not where you walk.
I have a clear glass brand new shower door. The squeegee method is great in principle,, but there's a bar in the middle of each panel which makes the squeegee method kind of disjointed. I cannot make smooth passes all the way to the bottom of the door, which is annoying...
I am brand spanking new to your channel, and we have a smaller walk in shower with fiberglassor hard plastic walls and the sliding glass doors are so nasty! They never have been "clean" and I have tried EVERYTHING! Another issue they inserted one of the etched glass shower door inserts backwards, so the water and soap hits the etched part and I have tried all methods and nothing will remove that scum haze,,,, should I just invest 400 for a new setof doors and be diligent with them? do you have any ideas... I even thought of removing the doors and just installing a shower curtain but my husband is against that idea,,, ideas, suggestions, PLEASE???
We’ve only had our new shower for about 2 weeks . I’ve noticed scum on the bottom half .. just tried the DIY spray , but it didn’t get it . I wouldn’t think that we’ve had that much buildup in the span of two weeks. Could it possibly be something else or should I try the harsher vinegar as she explained in the video any advice would be good thank you in advance.! Btw ..I’m speaking of the tile ! Thx
