Yeah. Quebec gets 24 senators, but BC gets...nothing actually. They have to share with three other provinces of western Canada. Imagine the uproar if New York and New Jersey each got 24 senators, but California, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho combined only got 24. If its gonna be like that, then redraw the probinces to match that (ie replace BC, AB, SK, MB with Western Territory; NB, NS, PEI with Maritime Territory).

Can we see the Canadian senate debates on RU-vid or somewhere else? Est-ce qu’on peut voir les débats du Sénat canadien sur RU-vid ou ailleurs?

They're the upper chamber of parliament. They're job is to debate and vote on legislation, as well as propose amendments. They can even put forward their own legislation, but that doesn't happen often. For a bill to become law both chambers of parliament need to pass it and approve any amendments. We have two chambers of parliament so the house (the lower chamber) can't unilaterally make laws, which could be a real problem if someone with bad intentions got a majority. It's one of the many checks and balances our system has. We can debate if it should be elected or not, I think it being an appointment is good as it lowers the penalty for going against the party, but there's arguments for both sides. But, it is very important to have this check on power.

Adam LeBlanc It's better if they have no party affiliation. Otherwise we would end up like the States.

The reason we have the problem down here is the 17th Amendment. The Framers (those who put together the US Constitution) specifically required US Senators to be appointed by their State Legislatures while members of the US House were to be elected through popular votes. Thus the sovereignty of the States would be protected against Federal encroachment. The Progressive movement did a lot of damage, part of which was convincing the People to undo that check on the Federal gov't by changing US Senate elections to the popular vote style just as what we have in the House. We need to #Repealthe17th Amendment.

Where would the senators sit? They wouldn't. There would be no senators.

0:16, the Senate, looks after its regional representation, so it is a government within a Government. Who was representing this Pickton pig farm region, in southern British Columbia?
