"The original rebellion." There are very good Christians yes, but for what this video was about, a good amount of it was by force and ya'll don't recognize it. I actually believe in freedom
The video is about how Christianity elevated the status of all human beings to equal under God and brought fidelity and love to marriage. Not always practiced consistently by Christians, no, but definitely what is taught by scripture. I’d take that over the freedom that the Romans had. At the end of the day most morals are promoted by force. That’s what law is for. Better that it be good morals.
@@DetonatorCallanEven freedom is a hoax. We are never really free. With all the expressions of freedom we see around, I see a lot of people enslaved to drugs, alcohol, p*rn, every imqginable vice, and even gender identities. It's only in Christ that we have freedom, because it's either one is a slave to sin or a child of God. No fences here.
@@DetonatorCallan Careful! I don't think you live this out brother, I say this in love; turn away from this thinking. When you say "freedom is better than enforcing morals onto people" You know that this also means that to live this out consistently it means we should allow people the freedom even to kill each other rather than enforcing them not to. Why is it we should let one person have his freedom and then restrict another persons freedom? - This is not true freedom. True freedom is not the liberty to do as you please but the power to do what you were meant to do and to be who you were meant to be. - This can only be defined and good if God who us perfectly good gave us that definition, and he did but we walked away from it. True freedom is knowing that while you could and have the power to kill or hate someone with or without the law; you choose not to. It is the same with many other things. This is actually the heart of God in the commandment "you shall not murder" and also revealed on the sermon on the mount when Jesus said: Matthew 5 21 “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell. 23 “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift. 25 “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. 26 Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny. True freedom is knowing that while you could and have the power to have sex with who ever you want with or without the law; you choose not to. Instead God offers a great life were you have sex ideally with only one person. As a man, that means with a woman; who you can build a family with, and she is your one and only wife who you choose love. Matthew 5 27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
'Christian sexual ethics elevated the Roman society' until it fell 50 years later. Byzantium also fell from it, and America is in it's final stages of falling apart from it. Actually, they aren't Christian ethics at all, that is an illiterate's perspective. The Bible does not 'uplift women' as equals (1 Tim 2:18), it doesn't ban but rather allows slavery (1 Peter 1:18) and it does not ban but rather allows polygyny (Exodus 21:10). All these ideologies were Roman exclusively
T. S. Elliot reminds us “It is in Christianity that our arts have developed; it is in Christianity that the laws of Europe--until recently--have been rooted. It is against a background of Christianity that all of our thought has significance. An individual European may not believe that the Christian faith is true, and yet what he says, and makes, and does will all spring out of his heritage of Christian culture and depend upon that culture for its meaning...I do not believe that culture of Europe could survive the complete disappearance of the Christian faith. And I am convinced of that, not merely because I am a Christian myself, but as a student of social biology. If Christianity goes, the whole culture goes.” We need Christian ethics for a thriving culture!

Just because Christianity brought arguably better sexual moral ethics to the Greco-Roman world does not mean Christian sexual moral ethics are the best idea. Just because something is a better idea does not mean it cannot be reformed or improved upon. Christianity is very much against homosexual relationships and non-monogamous relationships. Instead of forcing other people groups into a strict Christian religious relationships and marriages, we should make space for people in our society and culture to have other types of consensual relationships and marriages.
@@icypirate11 those type of relationships are unfulfilling and leave one empty. That’s why the church is against them. Scripture tells us what’s right from wrong for our own good. Polyamory will only cause harm to those involved and same with same sex marriages. Just look at statistics if you don’t believe me. I also speak from knowing people in those situations and it’s nothing but selfishness in the relationships.
The only perfect Christian is Christ himself. And since God is perfect, the best we can attain is to keeping improving ourselves. As Christ bore the cross for our sins. As Christians we bare the cross of never being sinless on this earth but to never stop trying to attain the impossibility of being one without sin. God loves the Christian that never gives up and keeps on going no matter how many or few sins that person might have. For they honor the Lord in prayer, acts, and rituals of Christian traditions.

@@Charlotte_Martel From what I recall of my public school education, the history of Christianity was carefully avoided throughout. We got a bit of ancient Athens, then it must have skipped right to the French Revolution. I don't think we got anything from the Roman Republic + Empire nor any middle ages history. I'm thinking it's their policy to steer clear of any whiff of religion. We got the history of liberal democracy instead (sexual revolution included).
This legitimately made me cry. God loves us so much and he’s looking out for our BEST interests! The lie people believe today is masterfully crafted and it’s so tragic that many can’t see the beauty and goodness of God given sexual ethic. Thank you, Lila, for this much needed historical primer. It is frustrating talking to many people who are below the age of 30 to 35 regarding sex and morality. Their notions concerning fidelity and sexual impropriety in general have been extremely subverted by an overly permissive culture. They think that this anything goes attitude around sex is liberating. A proper cultural and historical perspective would demonstrate to them that such lax attitudes regarding sexual mores actually lends itself to predatory and exploitive behavior. Its not empowering. It leads to increased victimization.
You clearly aren’t familiar with all the sex abuse that happens in churches. Maybe you should be worried about Christian pastors and priests rather then consenting adults

Proud to support this organization. This is a thoughtful presentation on the historical context for sexual ethics. The message is good and holds truth. I think it’s important to mention the spiritual world behind all this. You can leave ‘Egypt’ and change the rules, but it takes a change of heart (repentance) together with the Holy Spirit, to get ‘Egypt’ out of you. Also, I think it’s good to do research on what Constantine did as well: he abolished God’s appointed times and feasts and mixed their familiar pagan customs in the religious rules and feasts he set up to serve God. I think we should also ask God if all those rules and feasts we still follow and celebrate because of that, is up onto this day how He wants to be served and celebrated. I’m new at this research, so I might be wrong on some aspects, but somehow this really landed in my heart. It makes me long for a new revolution, on all Christian aspects, in the Spirit of Truth. Because I believe following Jesus in every way sets us truly free. ❤ Thanks for this video.
The West has indeed fallen. However, it can rise again. We can all lift it up together. All is not lost. The message this video promotes is a solution to the horrible mistake that was the American sexual revolution.
Maybe, but we'll have to go through a form of cultural penance. Because obviously we are not wise enough to learn through past wisdom, we need to unfortunately experience the consequences.
I think this is all good and as a Christian woman myself, who waited until marriage, I would recommend doing the same to other women. That being said, I can understand the point of view of feminists and why so many women today decide to have sex outside of marriage. Although Christianity tells men to be chaste and moral, a lot of Christian men fail at doing that. Then you see big faith leaders go on and on about how women have to be modest and chaste, all the while they themselves are having affairs and so on. So women see that and feel defeated, and end up thinking "why bother?". Those same men who love to preach those good principles don't apply them themselves, so why should I? That's why I really believe that men should step up and be role models to women. Yes feminism created a lot of problems in our societies, but you can't expect women to be all good and moral while men can preach loudly and yet act differently.
@Kwildcat13 I completely agree! Unfortunately, in most cases, the man doesn't wait, and that's considered less bad than if the woman does the same. Double standards.
Tactius during the Roman rule wrote about how Germanic pagan tribes had sexual morality and with one partner to the end they were monogamous without Christianity...
I think about how China had marital norms for ages. The communist party still had them, yet the people who scream "Sexual revolution is marxist" seem to ignore that.
Awesome video Lila, very enlightening to understand the valid ethical importance that the framework of marriage and Christianity provided in societies leading up to today. Great video editors too, keep up the good work guys!
From one unbalanced extreme to another. The Roman Pagans treated sex as just one more way that the strong take what they want from the weak, with no other standard. The Roman Christians said you can only have sex with one person for your entire life, with potential for severe punishment upon those who fail to comply. I think we can have a balance, where sex and love are recognized as profoundly interconnected and interdependent, without needing to enforce a specific type of relationship. Love is the Law.
I wish more people understood just how much better life would be for everyone if we all chose the Christian model of Sexuality. We don't believe you need to be perfect, we just believe you need to try and that Christ will help take care of the rest❤
You're the first commentor. Ipso facto, you are the triggered one. To say nothing of you posting the same comment on any post that either sounds Christian or supportive of the video.
When I saw the title of the video, I immediately thought of Kyle Harper. I read his works when I was still an atheist. Glad to see him used as reference for this video.
One thing missing from this, was that the idea of "loving" one's spouse was popularized by Christians. Before the Christian reformation of marriage, love wasn't actually required or even expected of two people entering such a union. It was purely a means of propagating a family and social alliances. Back with the "Gay Marriage" oxymoron debate, I dug through early marriages and it was interesting to note that all the modern "drive" for redefining the institution came from "Well they love each other, why do you care!" Love as a core aspect of marriage was a Christian invention, which these people were spitting in the face of to try and redefine the institution.
@@cherylschalk9106 yes, unfortunately some of the clergy have turned against it. I do believe that the church was the promoter of these ethics, and still do but it’s some of the clergy that have turned their back against the faith and corrupted it. Really cool overview here. How beautiful to see the vulnerable in society embraced and elevated with the advent of Christianity. Every human being has inherent dignity, and our society has to reflect & protect that truth to be just.
Lila’s absolutely right. I’m so glad my mother wasn’t a crazed leftist feminist. When I was a rebellious teen my mother reminded me about what the church taught about sex. And I have to say, what you brought out here is similar to how it feels when you read the Bible and believe it, and then are confronted with the reality of the world. You know why all the major issues are wrong. A dark truth here, but a undeniable truth, is that every immoral sexual revolution has led to the destruction of the people perpetrating it. The Roman empire, Sodom and Gomorrah, the tribe of Benjamin, and most anciently, the whole world during the Great Flood. We have a prophesied destruction coming, of Mystery Babylon, which is likely the USA just judging by the global dominance in tech and influence of Hollywood and music industry (making the world drunk with the cup of her iniquity).
And it's funny that all people sold slaves were sold by their own people. If you were a weak tribe you were sold by stronger tribe. My people did it too. We kept slaves of other tribes. Sometimes we would adopt them as a child of one that was lost. I'm a native american. Deal with it as you choose.
When men and women recognize the inherent dignity in each other, they can recognize the inherent dignity in their children -- from the very moment of fertilization. God's design is beautiful.

This is a half-truth. There were some sexual restrictions on men in ancient Rome and homosexuality was highly stigmatized, but it's also true that men were free to do what they wanted with their slaves and that infidelity from very high status men wasn't really looked down on.
That was the small critique I was going to make as well. There were in today’s terms anyway definitely homophobic slurs and attitudes in both Ancient Greece and Rome, and it was known that sexual abuse very much so greatly harmed children. But yeah the ones who could were not uncommonly very perverted and gross.
Powerful men are still allowed to do whatever they want, ant the biggest excusers for their behavior are Christians. It's the Family Values crowd that is defending Trump from the consequences of his infidelity. He's as much a Christian in sexual morality as Nero was and yet they hold him up to be a messiah.
Considering that Roman and Greek society involved a lot of pedophilia, it makes sense there were restrictions on men. The practice of Homosexuality should still be stigmatized because it’s similar to pedophilia.
True many pagans recognized and appreciated the high moral standards of the Christians. The first social services were those organized by the Church and not limited to Christians only. Stoics had many similar views. But these were an elite minority.
I admire the intellectual honesty. Pagans or non-Christian-origin peoples did have a lot of good moral laws and ways of thinking. The Ancient Chinese, Ancient Egypt, Ancient India, Mesopotamia, the Greco-Roman world ... They all had good morals/moral principles of their own. But yes, Christianity elevated it all to a much higher level. Edit: I forgot to mention Ancient Egypt.
We need more videos like this. A well-articulated apologetic on morality. Many discuss moral epistemology but refuse or are ignorant of moral ontology.

Many blame Christianity for the fall of Rome, but even before the Crisis of the Third Century, there was no saving it. The people of Rome were served best by a sexual moral standard. Later in your video, I'd be careful with how you relate patriarchy to the degeneracy of the day. Even after Christian morality became firmly entrenched, women were still legally and morally bound to their husband for their own good, as they ought to be to this day. Christ and Paul were big into patriarchy (Christianity is a patriarchal religion). This a big part of why the former emphasized shielding widows so much.
True it did change sexuality of Rome but only in name, upper class men continued to this and they used their power to get away with it king had tons of mistresses in their courts and a lot of arranged marriages didn’t really ask for the women’s consent
as it should be. men were never designed to be with one woman. Its a fact that the children created out of wedlkck, in the purest form of lust and love and conquest of the woman persued by the king, are generally better, stronger and more like their fathers, then the ligitamite ones. look at Charles martel, alexander the great, genghis khan.
Where does one find scriptural support for a male to be a "virgin" prior to marriage? Also polygyny is not only acceptable, but also Commanded at times, and is never called out as sin in the OT or the NT.
The ideal is simply 1 man and 1 woman. The image of Jesus and the church will also symbolise the man and the woman in marriage. It is not necessarily a sin, but monogamy is better. The NT speaks almost exclusively of monogamy.
@@JESUS_Saves3747 I have heard many many times, that 1 and 1 is the ideal. But you can not find this as an "ideal" in scriptures. If appealing to God and the OT. God divorced the House of Israel and the House of Judah. Is God's example now the ideal. 1 man with 2 marriages, 2 wives? Or what about Uriah the Hittite. He is the only man in scriptures to explicitly be documented in scriptures as a one woman man. I can strongly assume Adam had only one, Eve. But that is an assumption from silence. Only Uriah, is explicitly shown to be the husband of only one precious lamb. I would argue that he was NOT an ideal example of monogamy for a number of reasons. I often think of his example to more like the man who was given little, did little, and lost all that he was given. The Parable of the Three Servants in Matthew 25:14-30. "28 Then he ordered, ‘Take the money from this servant, and give it to the one with the ten bags of silver. 29 To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away." Again from the New Testament, Jesus invites 10 virgins into the "GAMOUS", but only 5 were ready and so only 5 entered. Again from Matthew 25. With, I believe, 9 books written by polygynists. 40 scripturally supported polygynists and only 1 Monogamist. Why is monogamy held on the pedestal as an idol? I appreciate your honest response. Polygyny is not the ideal, according to you. And monogamy is "better", but what about singlehood? The fact is, there are men in heaven who were unmarried, married to one, and married to many. Polygyny is NOT Sin. Period. I won't argue about which state of being is better than another. I am not God. To each their own. For myself, I pray that God will one day say. Matthew 25:23 23 “The master said, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!’
The Bible addresses the concept of monogamy in various passages, emphasizing the ideal of one man and one woman in marriage. Here are some key references: 1. Genesis 2:24 : "That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh." - This foundational verse describes the creation of the first marriage between Adam and Eve, setting a pattern for monogamous relationships. 2. Matthew 19:4-6 : "‘Haven’t you read,’ he replied, ‘that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate." - Jesus reiterates the Genesis account, affirming monogamous marriage as God’s design. 3. 1 Corinthians 7:2 : "But since sexual immorality is occurring, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman with her own husband." - Paul advises believers to maintain sexual relations within the context of monogamous marriage to avoid sexual immorality. 4. Ephesians 5:31 : "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." - Paul quotes Genesis to emphasize the unity and exclusivity of the marital relationship. 5. Proverbs 5:18-19 : "May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth. A loving doe, a graceful deer- may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be intoxicated with her love." - This passage encourages delight and faithfulness within the bounds of a monogamous marriage. 6. 1 Timothy 3:2 : "Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach." - This requirement for church overseers (bishops or elders) highlights the expectation of monogamy. These passages collectively support the view of monogamy as the biblical ideal for marriage, emphasizing the exclusive, committed relationship between one man and one woman.
Religious intolerance also increased in Rome due to Christianity. "Christianity brought into the religious life of the Roman Empire much greater intolerance of what was deemed to be religious error (‘heresy’) and deviance. Justinian, in particular, turned the Roman Empire into a much more persecutory state. Whereas previous emperors had attempted to ban pagan sacrificial acts, for example, Justinian made it illegal to even be a pagan and introduced the death penalty for those caught making false conversions. Under him, steady downward pressure was applied on the legal status and civil rights of heretics, Samaritans and Jews, and for the first time men were persecuted by the Roman state for homosexual acts. Anti-Jewish measures would further intensify under Heraclius, whose court presented the Christian Roman Empire as a ‘New Israel’."
Religious intolerance didn’t increase or decrease, it changed. Before, Christians were persecuted by the state, after, Christians were supported by the state. Before, Paganism was enforced by the state (mandatory sacrifices, purges, etc.), after, pagans were discouraged by the state.
Nero killed you for being christian. He even burned down a Roman City and blamed the Christians for it. Christians went through 300 years of Roman persecutions through crucifictions, thrown into collasiums to be eaten by lions for the entertainment of the people, torture and so forth. No where has Christians have ever been this brutal to pagans
