Hank Marvin, Bruce Welch, Brian Bennett & Sir Cliff Richard perform 'Apache' & tell the story of The Shadows' first UK #1. From the BBC4 documentary 'The Shadows at 60'.
He's well-known enough for their achievements I feel. And you will need to remember there's never first. One might say that Lonnie Donegan was the first guitar hero given that he single-handedly set off a Countrywide skiffle craze.
@@cycleSCUBA We all know Music is found in every known culture. It became very popular beginning the 50's in Great Britain. Credit goes to the Shadows lead man HANK shoveling pop instrumental modern music on electric instruments/guitar The craft & skill created by him basically propelled a great number of past famous musicians & bands that appealed audiences,
My late Dad, a guitarist himself, was a huge Shadow's fan and had Apache running through his blood until he passed away in August 2018. He played it so well. When I hear Apache I think of Dad.
When I hear Wonderful Land ,I think of a favourite cousin that passed .I turn it off ,usually ,when it's played . Keep safe from this horrid virus ,Shane .
Awe. Sweet, precious memories. My late husband, also a professional guitarist, was a huge Shadows fan and loved playing their music with his original, local band when he was at home.
Bruce Welch told me that this documentary was filmed in November 2019 and that The Shadows didn't get to see any of the footage before it was first broadcast in Spring 2020.
The Shadows and the Ventures literally ruled the world with their music, motivated many to pick up the Guitar, and still continue to do so. Their music is eternal.
I remember it well (I'm 82) and it WAS different and pretty easy on the ears. It's nice to see other older guys still playing and enjoying it. Thanks guys.
As a 13yr old my bedroom was covered with Shadows photos. I bought all their records singles EPs and their very first LP which has a track Nivram - Marvin backwards. Great to see& hear them sounding just as superb 60 yrs. on🏴
In 1975, I was captivated by the enchanting sound of a guitar playing "Apache." Fast forward to 2024, and I found myself once again immersed in that same sensation. The music resonated with my soul, effortlessly transporting me back in time and compelling my spirit to sway with the enchanting melodies and rhythms. The rendition of "Apache" by The Shadows remains unparalleled.
Without doubt the very best instrumental of the rock n roll era and my personal favorite to this day.Sounds as good now as when I first heard 60 years ago.Timeless.
Almost 60 years. Bring them back from the dead. It's just like day one. Totally amazing! Hank Marvin and the Shadows deserve their walk the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
That clean twangy guitar sound never ceases to do it for me. Its so pure, sweet honest and there s nowhere to hide like there is with distortion. knopfler and Albert Lee are two more of many fine clean sound exponents. Bless em all.
Apache, one of those songs that always sweeps you away. I've loved this song since I was a kid. And even today at 50, the song has lost none of its magic.
@@krishnaidoo6221 These guys didn't show up brash and wierd, they relied on their musical skills rather than the crazy appearances and aberrations of what is called POP These days, complete with all the electronic studio gizmos and two chord wonder vocals which seldom have more than three words in'em. Terry Offord
@@terryofford4977 Yes. And don't forget that you can't make it in music these days unless you have "backup dancers" because, you know, you can't hold the attention of the youts without backup dancers. Sarcasm implied
The Shadows would have to be my all time favourite band. I've seen many greats in concert over the years, but the night I saw them surpassed anything else. I never wanted the show to end. They were also the reason I took up guitar, so Hank and the boys are a very special part of my life.
I was 7 years old. This was just some the iconic sounds of music that defined the era and was playing in the background as I grew up through the 60's. Forever etched in my mind...... ✌🏻💕🇺🇸
When I got my Mexican made Fender strat back in 2011, I quickly had the pick-ups swapped out for 50's ones, as I'm a huge shadows fan and wanted my strat to sound like Hank's, the result of the pick-up swap was my strat sounds just like Hank's, especially with that authentic Shadows echo added 😁 The shadows are absolute legends, their music will remain timeless forever and be loved and enjoyed for many generations 👍🏻
Ohh that music! It takes me right back to the Saturday morning children's film club at my local cinema. They usually played Apache as we went in and settled down, and the sound of it playing loud and echoing round the auditorium gave me chills!
When I was a little boy Apache by The Shadows was one of my early favored music record. I'm very happy to see those Gentlemen still busy and in a good mood! Greetings from Germany.
@@faithfulforever6331 Danny Kaye (born David Daniel Kaminsky...was an American actor, singer, dancer, comedian, musician, and philanthropist. But you sure don't want to hear his songs, IMHO. You have lived a charmed life.
So great, so lovely! Hank, Bruce, Brian and Cliff... still in great form after all these years. They were unsurpassed, they are still unsurpassed, they will remain unsurpassed forever!
Bruce Welch just always seems to be a completely genuine guy. The young stars of today could learn a few things from him…first and foremost the music is your job…your trade… and ignore all the so called celebrity nonsense.
One thing I can never understand is comments from older people like this one is why you feel the need to imply criticism and indeed be explicitly critical of the subsequent generation. By all means compliment Bruce Welch but why the need to criticise younger people because they don’t fit your mould? As my mother used to say, if you have nothing good to say, say nothing at all.
This was the first tune our little high school quartet ever played. I learned everything I knew about rhythm guitar from Bruce Welch. Hank is still a master.
Hello 👋 Priscilla. How are you doing? Hope you are fine. I'm Scott Clifford am from Denver Colorado. Where are you from? You seem like a real country girl
One of my favorite childhood memories. My father owned a fish and chip shop in Western Australia (the very first to have a jukebox in it, along with pinball machines) and this was played all the time by the kids coming in..., I was 6 and everytime I hear this I go back to being 6 all over again. Thank you Shadows.
Little did I know when listening to Apache as a kid that one day the great Hank B Marvin would set up home on the other side of the world in my hometown, Perth.
Hank you're the best guitarist of all time bar none even though I love Knopfler, Clapton, the Edge, jJimmy Page, Gerry Mcgee etc, and the reason is simply because you don't have any room for error, your notes are the words. Been lucky enough to hear you live.. Wow what a gift God gave you..please don't stop giving us new music..
Love them! Always will! Reminds me of my dad, he loved them too as a young man in the 60s .... BSA, Norton, triumphs, Etc.... when England was truly great!! 🏴🏴🏴🏴👌🏽👍🏽😎
They have been my favourite group since my teenage . Still my favourite .I grew up listening to them .I am 66 , still madly in love with them .They made my youth happy .Unmatched .
Hank Marvin , Bruce . . . , Wow ! the late 60s heroes are still popular. For many decades they have ruled the music world . I'm a big fan of SHADOWS . 🎸🎤📻🎹
The 6os were the most impressive time for me (born 1948) grew up with Beatles, Shadows, Kinks... later the flower power time ❤, what a wonderful memory, a little sadness now looking back...
Born 1952, just in time to live in the golden age of rock n roll, from Elvis, Link Wray, Kinks. Stones, Beatles, Cream, Hendrix on and on.. variation, innovation. Still rocking at 68🎼🍡🎼🎸😎
Hello 👋 Katrina. How are you doing? Hope you are fine. I'm Scott Clifford am from Denver Colorado. Where are you from? You seem like a real country girl
Sir Hank Marvin ? Why has this not happened, he's a legend - and a much under-rated all round guitarist. The role model for thousands of aspiring guitarists for 60 years. Lets start a campaign !!
@@bertsongs No, he wasn't offered the honour, friend, he was offered an OBE and refused that. 'Guitar legend Hank Marvin revealed he turned down an OBE "for personal and private reasons". The musician who fronts the Shadows - Britain's most successful instrumental group - declined the honour while band members drummer Brian Bennett and rhythm guitarist Bruce Welch both accepted an OBE. In a brief statement issued through his personal manager Brian Goode, Marvin said: "I feel very honoured to have been recommended for an OBE and I'm happy that both Bruce and Brian have also been recognised. "However for personal and private reasons I've decided not to accept it."'
The Shadows still as good as they were 60 years ago, undoubtably the best instrumental group in their time and their music still lives on today. They were certainly the biggest group before the Beatles and the groups that followed during the climb of the Mersey beat.
Really miss you guys.... You still sound just as good as you did back in the days.... A Shadows reunited album would not be a miss.... thank you for shooting this documentary.
Played this song at my wonderful dad's funeral afew weeks ago, it was his most favourite piece of music ever and it so was lovely to hear it as he left this earth for his paradise ❤️ ♥️ 💙 xxxxxxxxxxxxx
Amazing band and the sound from hank Marvin's guitar is truly amazing. Wish I was born in the 50s to have seen this band live and with cliff Richard too when they were at their brilliant best.
There is no substitute for Hank marvin of the shadows. Its smooth clear technique without unnecessary embellishments makes it unmatched. Its sound is as clear as the sunbeam. Gently penetrates the ears like a sunbeam. Others use the same fender guitar but can't get Hank's wicked sound out of the guitar
Was a great tune.i learnt it around 1960 picked up the rhythm part first then learnt the lead. Took me so long to learn it back then age 18 i never forgot how to play it.
There used to be a woman who worked in our local bakery who looked just like Hank Marvin - same glasses and everything. Cracked me up every time I went in there - especially if I was really hungry…
I doubt there are many British guitarists around today who would not confess that they were - at the very first instance - influenced at the very least, to buy a guitar, learn it and play it by these four - fabulous - men. The Shadows also cemented the Fender Stratocaster into the British rock realm. No other guitar would epitomise the sound of the sixties instrumental playing as much as the good old Strat, with its cutting high-end and bell-like tones. The Shadows instrumentals were a musical underscore of the whole period. And Apache was usually the first thing any aspiring lead guitarist would undergo finger-cramps to accomplish. BRAVO GENTLEMEN ! And yes, they are all real *gentlemen.*
Listening to this, I can smell the new vinyl as it was taken out of the paper sleeve for the first time, and the smell of the warm Dansette record player. Can hear the mechanism of the auto functions of the machine as the record drops onto the turntable and the playing arm moves above the blank groove and then drops onto the disc with a crackle and hiss before the music starts. The coal fire warming my feet, mum preparing tea, and Dad just in from work. Memories all from those first few bars. Great days.
Our band, The Gathering, played Apache at our country high school speech night around 1967. Loved The Shadows and saw them live in Shepparton Victoria around the same time. Still play the tune!
I was a school kid, and I entered a disc store, asked to listen to Apache, bought the 45rpm , went back home, and played it so many times on my vinyl record player, that few weeks later the disc grooves were worn out !!!
APACHE, the music sounds great! I like to listen to this music played by The Shadows . The music is so unique and the sound of the Guitar played by Hank is really really good! After 60 years he can still plays with his guitar and the sound never change. Over all , all of them are good players of the music.they are so happy to be A TEAM of The Shadows. I can see Hank Marvin and bruce Welch never stop smiling during their performance and All of them are really GOOD ! They are good music players even after 60years their music will still remain the same and never change. Until today I still like their music.good to hear that they get reunited again recently in 2020.
Sometime in the early '70's I was in North Finchley looking for a certain road, I stopped my van, went up to the first person that I saw ... clip-board in hand (I was working) didn't look straight at the person who I had 'accosted', he then started to give me directions, it was then that I looked up and realised it was Bruce Welch !!! OMG ... I was beside myself, I hadn't a clue what he was saying, none of it was going in !!! I just said thank you, got back in my van, calmed down, waited awhile and then asked someone else !!!
Absolutely the best in the world the Shadows make Apache talk there’s no better than Hank Marvin simply incredible and amazing it gives me goose pimples just listening to it
