The Shameful Case of Steward Health Care

In 2023, in Boston, a woman needed an embolization coil after complications during childbirth, but the hospital didn't have one because it was repossessed two weeks prior for unpaid bills. Sungida Rashid died because the hospital was part of Steward Health Care, which was, over a decade, plundered for over a billion dollars by its private equity owners, while its hospitals were mired in debt and lacked critical supplies and staff. Here, I explain how this happened, and who profited from putting patient lives at risk: Medical Properties Trust, Cerberus Capital Management, and CEO Ralph de la Torre, who purchased a $40 million yacht with his share of the spoils.

It’s because the essentially empty, debt ridden shell that’s left can simply be allowed to go bankrupt - and if there are any assets remaining, these can then be snapped up cheaply by private equity vultures as well (sometimes even the same company that sucked out the capital in the first place). Hence, there’s no need for a bailout, because the ones left hanging are merely the actual hospital staff and the patients, not the asset strippers who ended up with the money. After all, who’s really going to suggest bailing out patients, nurses and doctors, right?
@liabobia

I used to work at a Steward hospital as a psych nurse! Unbelievably bad - we had zero resources for patient care beyond pills (usually not even the correct, up-to-date protocol medicine). Psychiatric care is hard enough to deliver without being hobbled by the hospital's goal of taking as much insurance money as possible without delivering adequate supplies or staff wages.

The sad thing is that this is pretty much one of the many standard operating proceedure with business in the US. My wife got laid off from THREE DIFFERENT JOBS because some idiot companies came in, bought the companies she worked for and then just stripped them dry, or sold the assets. The company would get bought, and the new company that bought it would just have a freakin tag sale and sell everything including the studs in the walls, while just booting the employees to the curb. What made this story so anger inducing was that this idiot and his company was doing this to HOSPITALS!! But what this idiot and his company did to those hospitals is very much standard operating procedure in business, and then, when anyone goes to the government to help with the situation for the employees and everyone who gets screwed over, they get countered by politicians and floods of money that call the former employees moochers and welfare kings and queens. It's always the poor's fault. These people don't give a damn about the employees and they'll fight like hell to prevent these people who lost their jobs from getting any help getting back to their feet.

it's astounding this isn't on par with terrorism or something? it's like 2am, my brain isn't jiggling enough to think of the right words but we know this practice is for pure profit & leads to people not getting medical care & people straight up dying. but then again, these are the same people who put a steep price tag barrier between humans & health care in the first place. what do i expect :/

Steward Healthcare bought one of the hospitals (Glenwood) where I live in Louisiana. My husband is an electrician who was doing work there. Rumors started floating around the hospital that vendors weren't getting paid. My husband brought this up to his boss, asking how many unpaid invoices they had. They stopped providing services at the hospital soon after. Within the last 2-3 years they had to shut down the NICU; you couldn't choose to have your baby there anymore. This caused me to go with St Francis when I became pregnant, and I had to have my doctor fight for me to be able to have a tubal ligation as they're a Catholic hospital and don't generally allow it. Steward fucking sucks.

By definition, Industry is ALWAYS for-profit. After all, it's the only way to rationalise technology investment and the wages of the people responsible for mining the materials necessary for it or better yet, the people who run the companies who own the devices essential for keeping people alive. There is ALWAYS a cost and a loss in industry, no exceptions. When you skimp out on infrastructure for other ventures because they're "for free" then you allow the quality of materials to fall accordingly. If you want free shit, then you deserve none of it. I want never gets as they say.

So there's this channel called company man, wildly different tone than this, overall upbeat in presentation, and that guy tells the stories of various companies. It's not until you watch a bunch of his videos that you start really cluing in on the darkness under that upbeat presentation. One after another, these places where I as a child shopped, or ate dinner, etc; those places are gone. And the story is always the same: bought up by "investors" plundered, and in the end, the money to buy them really came from the business that got destroyed. Over and over, the same story. Making stuff, actually providing goods and services, that takes a back seat to shuffling finances around. The money shufflers get rich, the people providing the goods and services get unemployed, and customers don't end up getting those goods and services.

What a fantastic system! There are plenty of politicians who would love to see this happen to the NHS here in the UK. There's been a steady push in that direction happening for decades, going back as far as I can remember. What's the expression? Private Finance Initiative or something? I can't remember... but this is how the government can declare that the NHS has never been more well funded whilst simultaneously there's a drastic decline in services.... clearly what we need is more private finance, customer choice and competition! Pay private companies to provide NHS services! Invite foreign investment too! It did wonders for our energy sector... look at how we are reaping the benefits from that now! It's so transparent and yet they continue to get away with it, blaming the failures on immigrants and the unemployed. It never seems to change in spite of how ridiculous it is. I really wish the USA would sort their healthcare out for the sake of everyone else! They won't have it though! I've had plenty of conversations with Americans who would seemingly rather die than acknowledge that there's any benefit to a national insurance system... because: communism or something. !

And people talk about petty theft like it's actual crime. The ignorance amongst the public is truly astounding. If they only knew the crimes against humanity that were being committed against all of us right under our noses, I would hope that they would be either shocked and to silence or would change their tune quick. I'm so sick to my fkg bones hearing about how we need to be more inhumane towards petty offenders. Why does that bother people so much, don't they know where the real evil happens!?! No they don't because it's not splashed amongst the news pages or the newsreels so they don't hear about it. It happens comfortably behind closed doors and unless you're directly a victim of it, you probably don't know. And that's how they've been getting away with it for so long. They operate stealthily like a sns5ke and unless you've been directly harmed by one of these criminal operations you're unlikely to know. Meanwhile, the only so-called crime that seems to get any attention are petty street level violations. People have things inside out and backwards. Wall Street has always destroyed this country from the inside out and since they've bought the filth that we elect, we've NEVER had any protection from it. This is truly sickening. The true criminals are robbing us blind and killing us right and left and getting away with it and laughing it all the way to their billionaire banks. Amazing.

Partly it's due to language barrier issues (I'm Spanish) but partially too because I don't understand some concepts, mostly those related to rich people doing weird things with their money. For instance, what's the deal with the hospitals owned by a company paying high rents to another company that's related to the first one? Where do these hospitals get to money to pay the rent? From Stewart? What's the business in that? I'd like having some of the points to be explained clearer for those of us unfamiliar with these topics. But keep with the good work anyway!

I went to go do some work at a certain hospital. When I showed up, I was told "I would give you a bunnysuit but we don't have money to give any to vendors so I'll just pretend I didn't see you enter without one." The front door was broken, the floors were filthy, multiple systems were broken.

@@GeorgRockallSchmidt Thank you! I should really have guessed that from the fact that you reference Warren within the text. I'm not overly familiar with him (apart from the obvious one), but I'll be looking to rectify that. Great video as always!

A very nice business model: Get the money out, file for bankruptcy, make it a problem of the community (and blame it on the poor). That´s the distribution of wealth. Isn´t it wonderful?

It looks like there needs to be an open window policy retroactively introduced just like in Russia. Plus, a clause that covers seagoing vessels by use of boat drones.

The Massachusetts house of representatives is one of the best. They don't vote on bills to become laws. They propose and write them, sure, but voters themselves vote directly on their outcome. They don't have as much direct power which i think makes them harder to corrupt
