I've been running a burr like this for some years now on all my bushcraft knives and honestly wouldn't be without it because of the many uses. My method to produce the burr very similar to the one you're describing. I use a honing steel mostly but also have a tool made from an old blunt router bit where I use the shaft rather than the blade of course. Great video and a very happy Christmas to you.

On my bushcraft knife, I keep the distance where my thumb can reach, (around 2 inches), rounded, for carving, and the rest of the blade towards the tip, I keep very sharp ( 90 degrees, ),, So, I have the best of both worlds I think,, 🤔🤔🔪🔪,, Great video Felix,, Merry Christmas to you and your family, 🎅🎅👍👍

I had to sharpen the spine on a fairly expensive bushcraft knife so I could use it like you demonstrated. But, I was in the field and had to use my Leatherman file on it. It took a little while, but I got a nice sharp spine that should have been on it when it was made.

With a metal file and sharpening stones, I created a scraping surface on the inside straight portion of the lockable cap lifter on a 111 mm Soldatenmesser 08 SAK. The liner lock makes it easy and safe to use this DIY - about 12 mm long - scraping surface for tasks like striking a fire steel.

@FelixImmler I did it today, thank you. I was too wary of using power tools, so I put the knife in a vice and used a file. I then finished with successively finer diamond stones. It was a great success, with a neat finish, and it showers plentiful sparks of a ferro rod. Thank you for the motivation.

At the tip of a Mora blade there is actually about a centimeter of sharp spine where the Scandi bevel ends. This can be used as an emergency option for creating sparks with a ferrocerium-rod.

I mentionied a card scraper edge on the spine in a previous video's comment(where I said that it can be good if it is put on the tail of the venture). thanks for mentioning my idea and watching the video i recommanded. But my method of making a quick(not so sharp) card scraper edge in the outdoors is using a tungsten cardbide machine tool as a burnisher. It is sharper than the burnisher and would creat a perfect burr, but this sharpness allows knives with non-perfect 90degree edges to take a burr. Thank you so much for showing my idea in a video, I totally did not expect it! I always love learning from many different fields and take inspiration from them into my own field

I've got the Morakniv Garberg, which has a carbon steel blade and is flat ground. I also have several of the lower end Morakniv blades and they are definitely stamped out and without a flat ground spine!!!--will have to tweak those on my Ken Onion Worksharp!!! Interestingly, the burnishers used for honing the burr on card scrapers are made out of tungsten metal and are MUCH harder than the steel of the card scraper! Thanks Again for the Great Video Felix and MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! 🎄🎄🎄

Hi Felix, the opinions in case of a spine should ve sharp or rounded are different and there are many of them. I also like a sharp spine more than a rounded one, because it's simply an additional tool. Please don't do that! I mean the first example, eating from a tree trunk. Foxes mark their territory by placing their stools on raised areas. Stones, sawn-off tree trunks. Placing food on a sawed-off tree trunk without a base is questionable because of the fox tapeworm. I also don't want to cut my sausage with a blade where I have previously wiped everything with it. Just some good advice.

It's worth pointing out that this is completely pointless on san mai knives where the outer layers are iron or some unhardenable steel. It really needs to be a homogenous blade. Even differential hardening or tempering like edge hardening or a soft back draw, renders it kinda useless. You want the whole blade to be hardened. So if you want a knife with a hamon, it's worth considering treating the back the same as the edge

When sharpening the spine you are doing the exact same process used in ice skates. Particularly figure skates or hockey goalie skates. Other hockey skates are ground to be concave. Goalie or figure skates are closer to a flat 90 degree grind. So, you could go to a skate shop and see if they can do your knife, if you don't feel comfortable yourself. Once you get the initial shape, you can proly find a hand sharpener for skates to touch it up.

Always peeled carrots with the back of my knives. And yearly I smooth out walking sticks and tool handles with the back of my bushcraft knife. Counter intuitive but you get better grip with a rough cut stick than a well rounded stick - so I shave the bark off my sticks while green, and then smooth out the ridges with back of my knife. Quick and dirty job does the best. I make handles for my tools and family as well - hoes, fries, axes and hammers. As others have said, you should probably add a big disclaimer warning people about the danger of grinding a knife the way you did. Or pin a comment saying that. I have had a knife flick at my arm while sharpening like that - first and last time I make the mistake. Luckily it wasn’t my last mistake… Cheers from Portugal. And merry Christmas Felix!

Felix - excellent explanations (and images) of why such a bur is desirable, what a desirable bur looks like, and how to achieve such a bur. Thank you and please have a very Merry, Christ-filled, Christmas as well as a Happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!

I am doing the 60 degree angle on my Moras with the Work sharp field sharpener and it is working amazingly well. I am sharpening close to the end of the blade, opposite from your technique as i was cutting my finger when too close but will probably changing the edge sharpening but still i want to have it at least 2 cm from the handle as sometimes for precision i use the thumb. I agree completely that further the sharpening edge is , more difficult to operate is.Great tutorial and tips again!!!

I thought a nice angle like that could possibly be very useful. Any safety drawbacks that you may have noticed while carrying or using?

Thanks Felix, loved it. I'm an engineer and long time knife lover and would like to add something to the commentary about how you ground the knife spine. I really liked how you did it. There are risks to your person every time you pick up an edge tool and if you cannot manage those risks you should not be handling sharp things. Of course, there are recommended ways of handling sharp things and that's fine, but we need to be able to recognise risk and to weigh it against any potential benefit. If you cannot do this, you will not last in a true survival situation. I've taken to doing it as you showed in the video, mostly because of physical limitations; it's just more comfortable for me. For most of my life, I've had high-risk physical jobs where there were little options available, so, learning to recognise risks and assess how to best approach any given task was the best survival tool I had. Again, if you can't understand what the pointy or slicey bits of knives can do to you (and how to stop it happening), don't use sharp things like knives. Keep up the good work, and thanks again.

Yes, since learning the value of the burr from you, all of my knives have been given such an edge on the spines.

i tried this with the shaft of an 8mm drill bit. it did nothing. spine is not bad, rounds over pine lumber corners fine, but no better than straight after the sharpening stone treatment. may be my technique, might be the tool. i only tried 3 times but paid attention to the angles you described

A ratchet wrench handle works good for making burrs 👍
