I love Forrest Gump but this should've won Best Picture. Frank should been nominated for Best Director and Robbins For Actor. This is a timeless classic and is Number One On The IMDB Top 250 List.

#1 film on my personal list. The best film ever made, imo. Just....the best. The "redemption" in the title does not refer to Andy. He actually didn't commit a crime (though he admits to pushing his wife away) and needed no redemption. The story is actually about Red's redemption having actually committed a crime. He's resigned to the life of being a convict and had no hope of getting out, that he could, in effect, be redeemed and get out. Hopelessness and despair took hold of him. The path Brooks had taken is to show what could happen to Red if he had stayed in the prison. Through Andy Red begins to realize that hope is real and he deserves redemption. He said it best in his last parole hearing. He knows he made a stupid mistake, and he would tell his younger self the reality of his choices. Something only someone who's had time to digest their consequences, have the gift of hindsight, and the wisdom of a life living with those ramifications. Just pure masterpiece.

I sort of disagree about it not referring to Andy. This could very well be called _The Shawshank Redemptions._ Andy was innocent of the murders, but still needed to be redeemed from feeling guilty about his wife. Red was redeemed by his rediscovery of hope. The inmates who Andy helped educate were given a better chance at redemption, which also goes for those who the improved library would continue to help. The prison itself was redeemed from the corruption under the warden and Hadley. I get what you mean, but there’s plenty of redemption to go around in this story, and it’s beautiful.

I think the redemption is of shawshank prison itself. The warden is corrupt, which made the prison a hello hole. At the end, the news and police found out everything Andy had uncovered.

@@0okamino - It wasn't Andy's story, it was Red's story all along. He was the narrator. We see it all through his memories, and hear it in his words. This is why we had no idea Andy was digging his tunnel until Red found out he'd escaped. Without Andy by his side, Red would have lost all hope. He would have ended up like Brooks. Andy didn't need to be redeemed or find hope... it turns out he had hope all along. He started planning his escape almost from the moment he arrived,. Even though it took him 19 years, he never gave up that hope. He not only masterminded his escape, he set up a life on the outside, complete with a new identity and enough funds to retire in comfort.

@@Mr.Ekshin I know it's Red's story of redemption through rediscovering hope. It still seems apparent to me that Andy did feel a need for his own redemption as well. He didn't lose hope or determination, but he did express his feelings of guilt about the behavior he had contributed to his marriage failing, leading to the circumstances of his wife's murder. He needed the redemption of being able to at least forgive himself. Even if Red's redemption is the most important to story (which I agree it is), I just don't think it has to be seen as the only one, and certainly not to the exclusion of Andy's.

My favorite very small detail that often gets overlooked is when Warden Norton opens the bible Andy left inside his safe. When Norton pulls the bookmark to reveal the rock hammer's hiding spot, you see the first page of the Book of Exodus, which is the story of the Israelites leaving the slavery of Egypt.

Hey Reject Nation, so Johnny Boy started havid Covid symptoms on Sunday, tested positive on Monday. I tested negative all week until Wednesday, then started having symptoms Thursday now positive lol. The saddest moment for me was when Brooks Hatlen was released after so many years and was lost in a changed world and committed suicide. I cry every time.The most rewarding scene was the warden getting framed by Andy and getting caught and the reunion with Andy and Red in the end!

I love the little detail when Red walks up to the wall and the tree and the harmonica plays on the soundtrack - the first time in the whole movie. This is where freedom and a life of hope finally begins for Red.

Great film...fun fact. The sewer scene...the "sewage" was actually chocolate sauce. Also, the movie originally ended with Red on the bus, but test audiences wanted to know what happened. So they added the beach scene.

I'll be honest. I constantly look for videos like this because I want to relive that moment of watching the movie again for the first time. I love the movie. The movie is my number one favorite of all time. But I wish I could see it again for the very first time. So quoting leonthesleepy, let me just say, "Oh man I ENVY you Greg!" Fun little bit of trivia is that the section of the Bible the hammer was hidden in was Exodus, and Exodus deals with the great escape from Egypt. Also, the movie was originally suppose to end on an ambiguous note. Whether Red made it to Mexico was going to be left up to our imagination; much like it was in the novel, but the studio vetoed that and said - no, you're going to have those two meet up with each other again.

This is one of the last great films with perfect movie pacing. This came out in 1994, before Michael Bay made it so that even dramas go at breakneck pace now. The camera isn’t constantly moving and even when it is, it enhances the storytelling rather than distracts from it.

As someone who has done some time, there is no "goodbye to your friends". The fact that you are getting out is something you keep as quiet as possible. There are people who will fuck with you just to get you another charge and more time. There are people who will demand your stuff, because "you won't need it anymore". Even telling a close friend, it's like winning the lotto. They might react in a "glad for you" way, or a "now's my chance" way - you never know.

This is considered a perfect movie for so many reasons and all of them correct. Morgan Freeman is amazing of course but for me Tim Robbins really is a standout. Andy is so reserved and Robbins played him so in a way that made his high emotional moments all the more heartbreaking and impactful. It’s like you could see him cracking and holding on over time. And Brooks! Omg. His story is so heartbreaking because they really make a point to point out several times before his release just how long he’d been there and why it would be just impossible for him. He was imprison in 1905! Think of everything that changed in the world from 1905 to 1955.

After this you should definitely review "The Green Mile", by the same director and also an adaptation of a Stephen King story. In fact it's possibly the best adaptation of a book into a movie I have ever seen. Fantastic movie with an equally excellent cast. The late Michael Clark Duncan does an amazing job as John Coffey, and everyone else is at the top of their careers too IMHO.

This movie is a masterpiece, one of the best movies ever made (and my personal favourite). Read the book after it and thanks to this movie and that book, now I'm a constant reader of Stephen King, and also my favourite genre is emotional drama in movies and books. Amazing story that touches a person. Also it would be funny if Greg never saw Pulp Fiction and would react to it, then there would be a "Trinity of Classic movies from 1994 that Greg would watch for the first time nowadays"

Red kept giving the same speech every time he was up for parole. Until the last time, after Andy had escaped. Andy knew Red had no hope and might end up like Brooks. So he made him promise him and sent him on that little scavenger hunt. Andy always had his friends back. Yes, this is the best bro-mance movie. 🤗

A friend of mine wrote a book about 80's movie villains and interiviewed loads of them, including Clancy Brown. He told me that, pretty much without exception, every single one of them were amazingly lovely human beings. I have met the odd classic movie villain myself and can say the same thing. I guess they get all the nasty out their system on camera!

@@kp361 She (Courtney Stodden) was 16, he (Doug Hutchinson) was 51, and she contacted him first and attended an acting class he was teaching. That's how they met. Also her mother spoke out in support of Mr Hutchinson about how kind he was to her daughter. The doctor who counseled them on the reality TV show Couples Therapy spoke in favor of Mr Hutchinson. She later spoke about how Courtney was the one with the power in their relationship, not Doug. And that was after the doctor spoke to producers about not wanting to be around them because she thought he was a pedophile and a predator. But after meeting them in person, and talking with him, that's not how he was at all. I never heard about this until you it was brought up here and did some reading on it. So don't get me wrong here, it was still wrong he married her when she was so young. He crossed a line there, BIG TIME. . . . BUT, (and this is going off of stuff I've read on wikipedia in the last 20 minutes) he might not be the creep many people have taken him to be since doing that. That's all I'm saying, backed up with facts.

Love Morgan Freeman. Ever since Driving Miss Daisy. The fact that this movie flopped on it's release amazes me. Maybe because Pulp Fiction, Forest Gump and Jurassic Park were released at the same time. Only thing I can think of. Great reaction as ever. On a side note, hope was a major thing in the Novella the film is based on (Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption from Different Seasons) its subtitle is Hope Springs Eternal.

90's kid here too. Fist time seeing this film on VHS, watching along with my older relatives. Not really understanding everything, but I thought it was a good film. As an adult, I watched it from time to time, really appreciated it especially through an adult's perspective. Truly a classic.

I'm so happy you got to watch this and share the experience. My brother told me to watch this. I was the movie kid in my family and my older brother was cool. When he told me in his serious, "I will definitely ignore you around my friends, but I know you like movies so stay in a watch this on TBS tonight" voice, I felt cool. I was 13 and a nerd. When my older brother got home he asked me about it. He asked me about why he liked it so much and I explained story structure and repeating shots and I felt like my cool older brother respected me. Whenever I watch this perfect film. I think about how my older brother took care of me in his own way. Also, one time I worked at a video store and my colleague explained to someone that had never seen this as "Beaches" for men. Best description ever. Thanks for sharing this. 👍

I’m actually one of those rare souls who saw this in the theater when it came out. It was hardly promoted and didn’t do well at the box office. I went in with no idea what it was about - but realized while watching that it was a faithful adaptation of a short story by Stephen King.

The Rita Hayworth movie they were watching is an iconic film noir from 1946 called Gilda, where she plays the title character, a femme fatale. She was married 5 times, including to Orson Welles during the time she made Gilda, none of the marriages lasting more than 4-5 years. She became so inextricably associated with the role, she later said, "Every man I ever knew went to bed with Gilda... and woke up with me.."

This Movie is the perfect example that when you watch it for the first time, you get so eager to see how the story is gonna play out from the beginning until the end. Masterpiece Movie! Fun fact : the prison location is no longer open, but it is the Ohio State Reformitory in Mansfield, Ohio. They do movie & prison tours now. It's an amazing place to visit. It's also a hot spot for the paranormal. ❤

A man I met who does paranormal exploration as a hobby went on one of the ghost hunting evenings when you pay to be able to wander inside. They saw a girl's ponytail get pulled straight into the air, and something was messing with the other women. It is definitely spookily active.

James Whitmore, who played Brooks Hadlen, was a leading man back in the day. This was the last thing he did before he died, and he was one of the most notable parts of the movie.

One of my favourite aspects of this film is questioning who the main character is. It is Andy or Red? At the moment Andy doesn't come out of his cell, he could have committed suicide and the film still work. Cause Red has the biggest arc throughout the story. It was only on this watch I noticed the similarities between the shot inside the warden's safe, looking out, and when they discover Andy's hole in his cell. I also love how Andy was so in control the whole time, he knew he could play the music and still keep his plan. Just superb. Easily in my top 3 films of all time, along with Interstellar and Die Hard With a Vengeance. All of them perfect IMO. GG.

This movie hits me in the feels more than just about any other movie I can think about, though Frank Darabont's other masterpiece "The Green Mile" is a close second (also a Stephen King story). I didn't see this in the theater when it first came out and I regret it. Frank Darabont did one other Stephen King story too: The Mist. That movie has one of the most gut-wrenching endings in history, so be prepared.

I had to take summer school my senior year (I was 2 credits shy of graduating). The last week of the class, this boy brought in this movie and said to the teacher " this movie is so amazing! You have to show it to the class!". Without even seeing the movie before, teacher declared a free day and we all watched Shawshank Redemption. I also live an hour away from the prison where this was filmed.

I love reaction videos like like. Shawshank is one of my favorite movies. I loved seeing your emotions change over the course of the movie. People go from "ok, let's watch this prison movie" to absolutely loving, pulling for and hoping for the characters. Loved watching your emotions evolve.

The prison is the old Mansfield Reformatory in Mansfield Ohio. It is no longer an active prison. A newer prison was built behind it. It's just a tourist attraction now. I went and did the self guided tour and it's so good. They have the room where Brooks hanged himself and has him ans Redd's name carved in the wall. My ex's uncle was sent there in the 80's and it was a very old and outdated prison.

Such a good movie, with an excellent cast. Brooks’ death breaks my heart, bit of a soft spot for James Whitmore ever since Them. King’s Different Seasons had some great stories.

One cool thing I've heard about this movie, is that for the scene where Andy walks into the library and asks Jake where Brooks is, Tim Robbins got super familiar with the bird's squawking patterns so that he could get hit line in while the bird was quiet

So I live in Maine and as such I love how almost all of Stephen King’s books and movies are set in Maine, but I do have to say, Buxton does not look like that. It’s much greener and there are tons of more pine trees. And the people here are very friendly. I just hope that one day a Stephen King movie can actually be filmed in Maine.
