Michael Clarke Duncan had to dig up awful childhood memories and fears in order to play the part. He said it was needed for him to do so otherwise he wouldnt have been completely able to encompass John Coffey's childlike character. It was his best role and was robbed of an Oscar. By reputation he was a gentle man too so you believe his performance. Rip

I wouldn't say he was robbed he was up against some powerhouse leading actors in supporting roles and also the kid from the Sixth Sense, Haley Joel Osment. It was a very tough category that year, who ever won it was going to be lucky, that just happened to be Mr Caine.

The thing is the innocence of John Coffee is what got to me. He was this big imposing character but he was the most gentle naive person you could imagine. He just wanted the best for humanity and was just misunderstood to the people that didn’t know him. This movie was so damn good

Yeah, his sweetness is actually what did me in too. The fact that such innocence, kindness, and vulnerability exists among such callousness, ugliness, and evil, is sometimes too much to emotionally process. His character was too good for this world, to the point that it was painful to watch. It wasn't the cruelty, but the sweetness, humanity, and childlike innocence portrayed in this film that stirred something very deep inside of me that I usually try not to feel in my daily life.

John is many things. He is a healer and can heal anything, he is an empath and can sense emotion, he can feel pain and injury and the closer he is the more he can feel it, his gift probably makes him immortal to natural death so that only someone else can kill him. The mouse living so long would be the equivalent of Paul living about 2000 years and they only got a tiny fragment of John's gift. He has seen the whole world in a world before planes, trains and automobiles are commonplace. His initials being JC are not a coincidence. I am a 46 year old man and I cry every time I see this movie or a reaction to it. This movie is perhaps the best movie ever made. The actors all gave award winning performances, the adaptation from the book was perfect, the director did a perfect job.

nope the average mouse lives 4 to 7 years. it lived 64 years past the events of the past. so around 4 times its age. the average man lives 76.3 years. so you x that by 4 and you come up with 305.2. he won't live thousands of years and if he would live that long he wouldn't be looking old at 108. the women thought he was in his 80s. but at the same time he most likely won't live to 305 either. since he is already relatively old looking. if he had a drastically enhanced life span he wouldn't have reached "middle aged" appearence until he was in his mid 100s

The actor who played Tom Hanks' character as an old man was Dabs Greer, best known for playing the reverend on Little House on the Prarie. He lived in Pasadena, Ca and was a customer at the bank my mom worked at. He was the nicest person.

I started tearing up 3 minutes into this video. I’ve seen this movie so many times, that it’s an immediate reaction. Especially when MCD appears on screen. He steals my heart the same every time I watch this film. When he delivers the lines, “Please boss, don’t put that thing over my face. Don’t put me in the dark, I’s afraid of the dark,” the waterworks r uncontrollable. I tear up just thinking about that scene. 💯 R.I.P. Michael Clarke Duncan. Such a powerful movie. One thing I think about is how Coffey could feel the pain of people around the world, and this was 1935. The Japanese invasion of China was on the horizon, and the wider Second World War after it. I can see why Coffey wanted a rest and how all those events would have effected him.

Tom Hanks turned from an amazing comedic actor into one of the absolute best dramatic actors of all time. His early work was pretty much only comedies, but around the mid 90s he transitioned into dramatic roles and became a legend.

Being life long Stephen King fan, I read the novellas years before the movie, and cried then. The movie brought the characters to life. Trivia: Bruce Willis convinced Michael Clarke Duncan to try out for the part of John Coffey, because he read the book too, and thought he'd be perfect for the role. He was right. Edit after your reaction: I love how you watch, and listen to the story, and can pick out what might happen. And I respect your emotions. Stephen King is against the death penalty. He's written and spoken about it. Thats how Shawshank and Green Mile came about. King isn't a horror, death writer. He writes about the living...The day Mr. King's time on this earth is over, I'll be taking a day off work to mourn, and there is no "famous" person in the world, I'd ever feel the need to do that for.

I read these Stephen King books when they first came out in a series. There was a line out the door every month for the new chapter. That last book in August (my birthday), we were all crying in line like we were on the mile w/ Coffey... we knew he was going to die... we just hugged each other and read the last chapter on any table, wall or curb. The only other time ive seen a population in line like this was when superman died in the comics.

This is an absolute masterpiece. I've seen it so many times and I'll cry each time because it is one hell of a deep movie. The casting choices were absolutely phenomenal. I hated Percy and I hated Wild Bill, but that's because the actors did such a great job with those characters. And of course Tom Hanks and especially Michael Clarke Duncan...what a standout performance. He was always a good actor, but this was his finest performance and it's 1 of those roles where I don't feel like any other actor on this planet could have been as good. He was born for that role and was amazing. As for choosing between this, Forrest Gump, or Shawshank...I'll take this one over the other 2 any day. Both of those movies are amazing and I absolutely love them, but this movie just has something deeper than those others. Bravo to those that voted for this one because it was a great choice. I really would like to see a reaction to 'Dances With Wolves', but this movie was the best choice.

I must have seen this movie dozens of times over the years, everytime I watch it I am an absolute sobbing wreck. Every. Damn. Time. Michael Clarke Duncan was an absolute tour de force, you were 100% right no other person could have played John Coffee. He breaks my heart. Tom Hanks was brilliant as always. This movie is a complete emotional roller coaster. You got from laughing, to anger, and crying. Percy is probably One of the most despised and hated characters ever put on celluloid. Anyone who can watch this movie and not cry does not have a soul. I don’t no how many times I’ve seen this movie. It always makes me cheer up. Even when I watch people react to it can’t help to get a lump in my throat at tear in my eye. This movie is a masterpiece. Although I will put Shawshank above it.

Best male reaction I've seen to this movie. Most guys like myself are too emotionally repressed to let ourselves cry or tear up. So well done. Hard to pick a favorite but for me this is the most emotional of the 3. Shawshank ends on such an upbeat note aka happy ending. Forrest Gump is a roller coaster up and down up and down with a bittersweet ending.

@@lunacouer I agree, I too am glad men are becoming comfortable sharing their emotions and letting go instead of bottling up. It's probably why for a while it was hard for me to express myself properly which led to an intense depression and mental health issues. I am learning to express myself and it is so awesome when I do. I have a friend who also let go and he is more comfortable sharing things now mostly because I will listen and try to help him. I did the same thing for a manager that I once worked with and even now he is still eternally grateful for how much I helped him.

This one gut punches me everytime...especially when Paul ask John about what will be said to him when he heads to heaven. Think I agree that I like this one most over the other two. Saw it on Christmas Eve when it came out, small tradition I had with grandparents. Had to see it, having read tons of Stephen King as a kid. Probably the first movie that actually made me cry.

Just watched it for the first time, been a huge cinema nerd for the longest time and have been putting this movie off. When Tom’s older self cried to the flicker show in the beginning I just knew it was some crazy subtle foreshadowing so I buckled down and gave it my full attention by myself ready to be enthralled by some good ole movie magic. When the flicker show came back around in the theater scene I absolutely lost it. So good. What a movie man, I am at a lost of words, I am so moved rn. Cinema.

This movie is almost cruel with its immense kindness, tenderness, and hope. It's such a fine message, it makes us hurt with sympathy; tears are inevitable. It's a wonderful movie. You fought the good fight, TRR, until the very end of the film. Obviously you're a true human being. Thank you for your open honesty and true reactions. Elaine has one of the most poignant lines in the whole movie: "He infected you with life?!" Two other clues: the lawyer (Gary Sinese) says there is no back story for JC, it's like he just dropped to earth; and John himself, while watching the flicker show, says "Theys angels, just like in heaven."

In my opinion, The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption are 2 of the Greatest films ever made. And I say the combo of Frank Darabont and Stephen King (who wrote BOTH of these books) was phenomenal. Of course, I'm a HUGE King fan to begin with. His earlier movies were good, but they didn't get the attention they deserved. But obviously these two did. And we see why King fans say that he is awesome. (Again, IMO)

I think any of us that have been a fan and appreciated Greg as he’s let us into his life in this channel over the years, knew that the second this was posted, that this was going to be a very special reaction. Most of us don’t, and won’t, ever know you personally past this awesome channel and community, but this just really seemed like the kind of masterpiece you would really enjoy and take to heart, Greg! Like many of us 🙂 (sorry for being presumptuous, btw, just love this film, and anytime someone whose educated opinion on most film I respect, it’s always a blast to watch along with the gems you have somehow missed. We all have those lol…for instance, I am a MASSIVE “mafia movie” genre fan, and come from both some real life intrigue, and a track record of seeing every mafia film out there. Except any of The Godfather films somehow…)😅 Anyways, have a great day, brother, and thanks for sharing your reaction! I cry every time, saddest movie Ive seen. I’m 20 years old and ever since my dad showed me this when I was 9 or 10, I’ve enjoyed it so much and feel it in the heart every time more and more. Michael Clarke Duncans impact on this movie is just out of this world. Just so good

The Green Mile is one of my favorite films of all time. Mr. Duncan, Mr. Hanks, heck, everyone in the cast was amazing. I respect you being able to show your emotions freely while watching this because I couldn't hold back the tears myself. RIP Michael Clarke Duncan and a Chicago legend. It’s always hardest for me at the end when Tom puts the necklace back on him. Kinda reminds me of real life when Tom gave his eulogy. MCD really showed how much acting potential he had but he’s gone way too soon

Greg, your genuine emotions and tears showed that you are human. This film is a masterpiece, and Michael Clarke Duncan's acting (and that of Tom Hanks, of course) is top tier, "infecting" John with incredible gentleness and humanity. Simply phenomenal.

I've only seen this movie two times in its entirety. The emotional stress it puts me through is too much, but its one of the best movies ever made and im so glad you got to know the story. I sob uncontrollably every time I watch it.

Mind you, a normal mouse lives for 1-2 years. Mr. Jingles has been alive for well over 60 years. Which is of course 30-60x longer than he would normally live. Paul's condemned (If we say 70 years is average) to live for at *least* 2,100 years if not 4,200 based just on how long Mr. Jingles has lived.

This is one of the best made movies I’ve ever seen. Great character development. No matter how times I’ve watched it I tear up. Beautifully made. 💕 A long movie but it needed the length to really tell the story. I challenge anyone with a heart to not have an emotional reaction after watching this.

John and Del both had learning difficulties ,Del believed that Mr Jingles was going to "Mouseville" and John was called an "imbecile" ,they were both childlike which made it more heart wrenching, anyone with a heart will shed tears watching this great movie, I did and I had seen it before.

4:38 When I first saw the movie, it was clear that the line "I tried to take it back but it was too late" was meant to have a double meaning, with here the viewer thinking that Coffey by accident had done something that killed the girls then tried to "shake them awake" (trying to take back what he did), but couldn't do it, he was "too late" in trying to undo the accident.

I’ve watched this so many times, and I, at the very least, tear up every time. It’s so beautiful, and acted so incredibly; especially when you consider how little acting experience MCD had at this time. Tom Hanks at MCD’s funeral was so funny and so sweet.

I watched this movie for the first time with a friend a few years ago. And I don't think I have ever cried so much at a movie. When he flipped the switch I could feel my whole heart shatter. Trust me, we all know how you feel 🖤

I think I know why the movie moves at such a good pace. Originally, this story was released as six novellas to form the whole story. But each novella was its own story that had a beginning middle and end. So, every thirty minutes or so you have unforced rising and falling of situations and emotions, which can then lead to the whole story's climax.
