Hi and welcome to episode 25 of the Shed of Dreams ES 335 guitar build series. Now that the frets are fitted it’s time to tackle the final job on the fretboard for now, fitting the binding. I’ve never bound a fretboard before so this will be a learning process for me.
I hope you enjoy the video, if so please consider subscribing using the link below.

I always used that thickness binding my for the body & use the much thinner binding for the neck,less scraping that way.

I just gotta say how much more i've come to appreciate your series more than most other RU-vid luthiers. a guy in a shed that shares his thoughts, makes occasional mistakes and explains how to correct them is INFINITELY more helpful and inspirational than every other "this ONE TRICK will make your NECK play AMAZINGLY" video there is out here. thank you for your videos, immensely psyched for the finishen build!

Thank you, very kind. I thikn that explains my rational for starting the channel, just a bloke in his shed with an affordable set of tools making the best guitars he can without any BS or hype. Really happy you are enjoying :)

I would invest in a set of high quality tang nippers for binding fretboards. it will allow you to have the frets over the binding on the side. It just looks a little cleaner. What you did here is very cool, its just a suggestion!! Sintoms makes a really good set of nippers but they are really expensive.

Good work Patrick. It only took one nib job for me to say never again. Plus I don’t like the loss of fret real estate.

Thanks Dane, it was an itch I needed to scratch. I think it's fully scratch now!! I like the look but it's very time consumming and the loss of fret area is an issue.

It is really an absolute pleasure to watch you doing all this delicate work! Very motivational (if that is a word 🤷🏻‍♀)! 👍🏻

The nippers will allow you to bind before fretting and you can get all that scraping done before the frets go in.

Hi mate, I felt the need to go with the nibs on this build, not sure why, guess it was just an itch that I needed to scratch. I'm pretty sure I won't go down that route again but it was fun while it lasted. I've really struggled to get nippers in the UK, you can get them from time to time but they tend sell out before I can get a set. I'll keep trying as I will be needinga set :)

Thanks Martin, I don't think I'd go back to superglue now, fully converted to acetone.

Fantastic guitar building ! Watched someone else on youtube and they were using a cnc machine.

I don't mind CNC but there is nothing like doing it by hand :)

Next time, line the binding up to the top of the fretboard when taping it on for gluing. Leave the back proud.It's way easier to remove the excess on the back than working between the frets. ... or just bind before fretting.
@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams
I wanted the binding nibs on this one, I like the look of them and wanted to see what doing them was like. I'm not doing them again!

Great video again. (I’m only half way through). Could you have applied the acetone on the face that will be getting glued to the neck to help with the colour leaching

Possibly but to be honest it's so thin that it gets into everything. The staining comes off really easily so it's not too much of an issue.

This looks great! Would it have been possible to align the binding flush with the top edge of the fretboard. Leaving the excess at the underside? If ot would then the cleanup on the underside would have been an easy one. I'm really enjoying this series!
@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams
@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams 2 года назад
Cheers, normally I'd align with the top but in this case I wanted to do fret nibs, I'll never want to do that again!!

This is coming along so nicely. I'm really looking forward to seeing how the neck joins the body. When you get there, could you explain how you get the neck joint to have the right angle for the strings to run parallel to the fretboard as they travel from the nut to the bridge please?
@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams

Thanks Andrew, I'll make sure I go into every detail of the neck fitting process. I'm still working it out for this build but I'm sure it will be fine :)

Looking good Patrick! Is it possible to line up the top of the binding to the top of the fretboard instead of the bottom? Wouldn’t that save all that scraping between the frets? I’m totally ignorant to the binding process, just posing the question! Looks like a job I would love to cut corners on….. you have a lot of patience! Thank you for the video
@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams
@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams 2 года назад
Hi mate, you have to line the binding up with the top of the frets to form the nibs. That's why there is so much material to remove. I tend to listen to music on headphones while I'm doing the long jobs, I can settle in for a couple of hours at a time that way.

@@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams well that's a good reason to film, something I have considered..... I just get anxious about editing and the extra time required. My wife already agonised about the amount of time I spend in the shed building guitars😂😂😂

I have a fretboard that I trimmed and messed up by using a demmel to trim it. I am replacing the fre t board on an existing neck. I repaired the fret board with super glue and fretboard shavings. I could save the fret board by putting binding on it.. My fretboard isn't glued on to the neck yet also no frets yet but the fret slots are cut. My question is do I trim my fretboard a little more so it matches the neck when I put the binding on it or do I sand the binding so it is thin so it matches the neck? Could be a dumb question.. But I am old and learning new stuff...

So just straight acetone is used to stick the binding? no glue mixed inside? Also can it be stuck with regular titebond?
@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams
@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams 9 месяцев назад
Yes, just acetone, works well. Titebond won't stick the binding at all.
