The Shining miniseries is really geat, but I understand that people prefer the film version. The miniseries had been well received back then, but later on, people were against it, even though it's faithful to the novel. Stephen King and Mick Garis did really well in the miniseries, I like the cast as well.
Hey Dave great video. I remember when I was 10 I watched The shining movie and then I watched The shining miniseries at my grandma's house on Facebook and I loved it. So I had my mom order it on DVD for me. and 2 years ago in 2022 I did my own review of it. I love this mini-series this is like one of the best King miniseries right next to the stand. I love most of the king adaptations I see some of them I didn't like so much but most of them are pretty good and this mini-series is underrated
Thanks for the positive take on the miniseries. I really enjoy the miniseries. I love this versions treatment of Jack and Wendy, the added backstory (thanks to the memorabilia in the basement), and all the other small details that the movie ignored that flesh out this traumatic situation that Wendy, Jack and Danny find themselves in. While the movie is superior in many regards, the cinematography is gorgeous, I hate what Kubrick did to Shelley Duvall. That woman suffered so much, and Kubrick's interpretation of Wendy was so misguided and wasn’t worth what he put her through. Then there is the way Jack Torrance started the movie as a creepy and disturbing character. Bam! 💥 In your face disturbing Jack Torrance. There was no depth or nuance to him, nor did we witness Jack’s descent into madness, nor his redemption at the end. So while the miniseries does look dated now, thanks to the poorly done SFX, I can ignore that so I can immerse myself in the world of The Overlook for a few hours with characters I like, and watch it all burn to the ground.
I’ve been looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this series! I agree with all of your points here. I’d really like to know why they changed the ending to the overly sentimental graduation scene. The last scene in the book is so memorable and I would have loved to see it translated to screen. Aside from that and a few other things you mentioned, this is definitely an underrated series. As a huge fan of the book, it’s a treat to see a faithful adaptation. Weber and De Mornay are excellent as Jack and Wendy as well. Great review!
It was better than I thought it would be but my main problem is it's just not scary. It has that clean, 90s TV feel like an episode of Eerie Indiana. Horror-lite, basically. I thought Rebecca de Mornay was by far the best actor in it, the kid was extremely punchable obvs, and Steven Weber I thought did well at being likeable but I found him less convincing when he had to act angry or demented. Have to say I haven't particularly loved any of Mick Garris's adaptations - he's no Frank Darabont!
I loved the miniseries much better than the movie! Mostly because it's more faithful to the book, and it's one of my favorites still. My favorite line is where Rebecca says: "Looks like someone got their fuses blown!" lol
I love this version of the Shining. I watched the film version and it didn't like it and is way over hyped. But the one thing I can say about the film is the atmosphere and cinematography is amazing - shame the TV series didn't capture that same feel. Of course there are elements in the TV series which could of be done better like the animal hedges - not seeing them move physically but do a Weeping Angels from Dr Who type effect. But I loved how it showed the family breaking down and the mistrust from both parents.
I liked it! Once in awhile I look around youtube to see if anyone's talking about it. I taped it on ABC when it first aired. It's got a couple of issues like you mentioned but overall I'd rather watch the miniseries than the movie. It's probably because as you mentioned, Jack is more likeable. Having said that, I saw the movie as a kid and it terrified me more than any movie ever has. In the miniseries I was waiting for the twin girls to show up, since that was the scene that scared me so much. Not remembering the book very well (though I remember loving it) I guess the girls showing up was all Kubrick.
after last week I did rewatched it (I own the DVD) and yes, I really do love the family dynamic, I really could tell that the Jack and Wendy loved each other, even if they had problems. Steven Weber kills it as Jack I will be honest. I agree with Stephen King that Jack Nicholson just seemed unhinged from the start while Steven Weber does a good job of showing the slow decent into the end. Danny is very bad, Tony isn't much better (were they brothers because man their acting was just bad) and I have a feeling the ending was a network mandate to ended on sugary ending. I would love to see this redone for like Peacock or Max or Amazon where they could go full R and show things networks wouldn't allow. (I personal favorite for me in the book was the windup clock and how even it went off the deep end)
@@DaveReadsKing I think doing it on streaming platform would give it the time it needs to breath. Thought I felt that about the Stand and... it had it's problems... still one can keep trying.
This is my favorite between the film and the miniseries is obviously the better adaptation. So faithful to the novel, rich with atmosphere, amazing soundtrack and excellent performances. I watch it every October.
I really didn’t like the special effects in the tv miniseries, less would have been more. I do enjoy watching the Shining miniseries though. It has the superior story, but the mood is a lot creepier in the Kubrick version. So there are good points and bad points to both.
Great video. Really enjoyed the series. Even though Shelly duvalls brilliant in the film I still prefer Wendy’s character in this. More resilience and much tougher. Also like jacks gradual descent into madness rather than the film version. A fan of both and I’d still rate it 4 stars.
Ive always avoided this, i think mainly because of my love of the movie. But your review has really made me want to seek it out and give it a go, just not sure if i can get past that kid......he can definitely read between the fucking lines!
I do prefer it to the Kubrick version. But I wish we could switch the child actor for the one in Kubrick’s movie. Honestly, I think the Kubrick version is overwrought & overrated. I know this is an unpopular opinion. I do not care.
