Stanley Kubrick's 1980 film adaptation of the Stephen King novel of the same name, The Shining follows the Torrance family as they move in to the Overlook Hotel for Jack's new job as caretaker! However, a classic tale of cabin fever runs into trouble as it finds itself a Stephen King story, and thus the hotel has a dark secret past, the hauntings slowly drive Jack insane... and of course, the kid is psychic.

Because Danny Lloyd was so young, and since it was his first acting job, Stanley Kubrick was highly protective of the child. During the shooting of the movie, Lloyd was under the impression that the film he was making was a drama, not a horror movie. In fact, when Wendy carries Danny away while shouting at Jack in the Colorado Lounge, she is actually carrying a life-size dummy, so Lloyd would not have to be in the scene. He only realized the truth several years later, when he was shown a heavily edited version of the film. He did not see the uncut version of the film until he was seventeen, eleven years after he had made it.

What I love about the shinning the most, besides it’s soundtrack which is phenomenally creepy in its own right, is the lighting, majority of the film is extremely well lit, almost giving the hotel this clinical, unnatural feeling to it. Like it’s too clean, makes it far more unsettling and works far better in my opinion than horror films that are so dark that any form of glare turns the screen into a mirror and you can’t see anything.

@@ripleyjlawman.3162 I think King was writing a very personal story about his own struggles with addiction, parenthood and not wanting to grow up to be his own father...which is probably why seeing Kubrick gut all that stuff from the adaptation truly hurt. Some interesting personal side notes on this film: Stephen King said he wanted to scare people but Kubrick "made a film to hurt people". - I believe Jack can shine too, but he doesn't know what it is and it scares him so he drank to medicate and numb the voices he hears. Of course, now he is dry and the isolation of the hotel makes the visions he experienced more vividly. - It's possible that Jack had sexually abused Danny at the hotel, and possibly in the past already. The sexual imagery throughout the film, the mysterious events of Room 237, and hints that Jack is hiding something, including him looking at a Playgirl magazine in the hotel lobby and that look he gives when he is being interviewed and delivers the line " Well, you won't have to worry about me" are a couple examples. He also seems to be very infatuated with the bathroom and the bed, specifically, when being introduced to their living space. The phallic-looking Apollo that is blasting straight towards Danny's face is an interesting choice when put into context like this too. Of course, the "you know I would never hurt you and mommy right?" moment he has with Danny is just blatantly creepy, as if he is prepping him for something to be normalized later. - Wendy is the one actually doing all the actual work around the hotel, which is funny because she didn't interview for the job. She is checking the boilers and the freezers, calling in for radio checks and weather updates, making food, and watching Danny throughout the film. Meanwhile, Jack is "writing" and often throwing a ball against the wall by himself. He doesn't do shit. WTF??

I read the book not too long ago for the first time and I don't see where this movie is THAT far off from the base plot of the book. Kubrick is a master film-maker and his interpretation was spot on for me. I also later acquired the TV mini-series that Mr. King produced and wrote the screen-play for....and it nearly matches the book, scene for scene and I didn't find it at all scary or creepy. Yet Kubrick's movie still does to this day. I largely feel that the music is the key. If you have the means to play the 4K version of this film, with its Dolby Atmos track at loud volume, you will be creeped the fuck out by the end. The music is integral to the horror.

Yeah the performances are good and have a few good scenes for sure (the bar scene is actually my favorite), there’s so many things that either were rushed, changed, or totally left out and not even referenced, that it’s annoying as a fan of the book. Stephen King apparently didn't like this adaptation of his novel, but for me i'm on Kubrick's side on this.

@@DamnatioMemoriae164 oh i read the book. I just prefer the movie version, because there is a subtle explanation for that edginess to Jack. He molested his son at one point, and theres plenty of hinting to that. There is a great vid on youtube that goes in depth to show it all and even shows some i missed in my 3 times watching the film at various ages. Highly recommend it

Have to agree with SK why he hated Kubrick's version of his story; Jack Torrance in the novel slowly goes mad in the Overlook. Once Nicholson gives you his usual smile, we already know he's bat shit crazy af.

At 6:04 - "Little kids just LOVE darts." Dude - it was the late 1970s, early 1980s. Darts was considered a family friendly game that even kids could play. It wasn't considered a game for more mature audiences until the late 1980s, early 1990s.

Kubrick films are a combination of story, performance, light, and music. Imagine 2001 with the soundtrack, or Barry Lyndon. Your assessment of Wendy is absolutely spot on, as she rises to the circumstances in a believable way to save her child and hampers Jack's attempted murder effectively. But going back to the statement that music makes the movie creepier. Music is a part of cinema. Think about the actually good Quentin Tarantino films. The soundtrack contribute a great deal to the effect of various scenes. Before Tarantino made music and image inseparable, I would argue that Kubrick did it first.

Unrelated, but my favorite memory of this film: the first time I saw it was at a middle school sleepover. One of my friends was a bit slow in putting some of the clues together and when we pointed out that "RedruM" was another word written backwards, she confusedly asked what "Dermur" was supposed to mean. We still don't let her forget about that.

If I remember correctly the hotel they used for the external shots actually has the room which was the heart of all evil in the book, since Steven King wrote the book in that room or at least the outline of the idea of it. I think that was mentioned as the reason for that change in the movie script. Funnily enough there is now a horror game involving the entirety of that hotel so I guess the owners now are much less opposed to the idea of the connection... years of fame due to the shining will do that i guess.

Wendy started submissive and ended up taking charge when the situation called for it, with a natural transition into it. Jack started dominant and ended submitting to Wendy, going after Danny as Wendy dominated him, with a natural transition into it. It's clear, especially after Doctor Sleep, that King only complained because it wasn't HIS version of the film. If the complaint was genuine, he would've made Doctor Sleep a follow-up to his own version of the film, not the Kubrick version.
@robertyeah2259
@robertyeah2259 4 года назад
He didn't make Doctor Sleep? Mike Flanagan did? It was Flanagan's script and his idea to mix the Doctor Sleep novel and Kubrick movie. His complaint was genuine, he didn't like that the themes of alcoholism were mostly removed and less sympathy was given to those who struggle with addiction. Mike Flanagan reincorporated those themes into the Doctor Sleep storyline. You lowkey sound like you're sundowning

I think The Shining is the most over-rated horror movie of all time. It is very slow, boring not remotely scary or frightening. There, I said it. The only thing creepy in it is the fact the hedge maze has materialized out of nowhere after the various establishing shots of the hotel. That is incredibly disturbing. That said, there were multiple scenes in this review that I've never seen before in any copy, such as the introduction of the 2 twin girls. In all copies I've seen (including the cinema) the girls first appear when Danny is riding the bike around.
