In today's video we look at the history of yet another one of Super Street Fighter 2's New Challengers. In this week's case Dee Jay, a character who was added to the game last minute. But he was placed in the game at the expense of another character. Was this the right decision or was this a mistake? Let's find out!

After uploading this video, James Goddard was kind enough to reach out to me to clarify a few points and make them clearer. So here are some corrections directly from the source! Before becoming the Co-Lead on Hyper Fighting, James Co-balanced Champion Edition and served as an apprentice designer on the game. While twins existed in Super Street Fighter 2’s earlier draft, they were 2 Fei Longs, rather than the Yun and Yang we know from Street Fighter 3. (Although it seems possible that switching Fei Long to one character, likely inspired the latter two). Dee Jay was created as a character prior to the release of Hyper Fighting, so the success of that game did not weigh in on Capcom’s decision to roll with the DeeJay character design.

Back in the day that was my biggest complaint about Street fighter 2 .There was not many Israelite aka so called blacks that study martial arts not just boxing in fighting games in the 90's .My so called white friends did not understand it . They would say go play something else than . But I love fighting games and I love to train in martial arts since I'm NOT into football ,basket ball ,or dancing.

Thank you for the correction. Also, as a black man, thank you for covering Dee Jay. I agree with Goddard and how hard it was to find black characters that weren't bad guys or comic relief. I especially think of the American Team in KOF, whose running gag became other teams beating them up and stealing their tournament invitations. As a kid born in the 80s, seeing that team made me feel represented... but then seeing their later depictions, I felt like SNK didn't take black people seriously. It's crazy to see modern day, when perhaps Japan finally realized how many black people around the world love anime, manga and Eastern video games, and how there's Dubai been a trend to consistently make cool black characters in rosters (thinking Tekken with all of their black characters, Darli Dagger in Samurai Shodown, Dolores in KOF 15, black ninjas in Naruto, etc). Also, TopHat, just for a tip, Fei Long's name is pronounced "Fay," like "day," not "Fee." (I don't say this to be snobby, but I'm a halfway decent mandarin speaker and someone who lived in China. I love your videos but the pronunciation was killing me).

Dee Jay was enormously popular in Jamaica. My friend told me when growing up there in the 80's and early 90's that while they really didn't have arcades for the most part but instead people who would rent out their living rooms often equipped with a TV, SNES and Super Street Fighter 2. He joked that regardless of where you were it always seemed to just be Dee Jay mirror matches. He said that they were so excited to get a representation in their favorite game!

This I can confirm, I took a trip to Jamaica with my family as a kid in the early 90's, I think '94-'95, it's true there weren't any real arcades I can remember, but there was a gaming room at the resort we stayed at. It held a bunch of SNES consoles, Genesis consoles, and one Pac-man arcade machine. SSF2 for the home consoles were out at the time, and this resort had 1 copy, that and SF2T. I remember the line just to play SSF2 was crazy, and the locals who worked there did enjoy DeeJay quite a bit. I just remember playing the bartender my turn, and of course he demolished my Ken with DeeJay. I was more upset I had to get back in line to play again, so I left. I came back later that day and got manhandled by another DeeJay player. I just turned on the other SNES and started playing SF2T, I at least had that game at home at the time.

Interesting, this is the first time I've ever heard that Yun and Yang were originally planned for SSF2. In a way I'm kinda glad we didn't get them till Sf3 and we got Deejay and Fei Long instead. I like Deejay personally, I think he fits in just fine with the SSF2 roster, sure his story doesn't add much to Street Fighter as a whole but I'm still glad he is there and wouldn't be upset to see him return in future games.

Have to immediately clarify & give proper respect here to my Japanese mentors- I was not the CO-LEAD of Champion Edition, I Co-Balanced that one & was an apprentice Designer (I pitched Champ as well). I was the CO-LEAD of Hyper Fighting. Again great to see vids & hope I can help with this.

It's pretty well known and obvious - but you might have mentioned that his pants say 'MAXIMUM' as all the letters have vertical symmetry so his sprite can draw both ways. Claw's claw and Sagat's eyepatch change sides when the sprite's flip on the 2P side.

@ottessirbob
@ottessirbob 2 года назад
@@KasumiKenshirou I remember hearing that vaguely too. I wonder about the Japanese artists/designers that had to find an English word that was both fitting for the character, and symmetrical. Sort of a unique task if you're not familiar with the language. Somewhat related, "Orko" from He-Man was originally named "Gorko" but they dropped the "G" in favor of a more symmetrical "O" to put on his chest in the event they flipped and reused animation as they often did throughout the Filmation show.

I think Dee Jay could have been a great addition to the SFV roster because of the mechanics and what the developers did with Guile in that game. Dee Jay could have had a solid V skill and trigger that could have made new comers fall in love with charge characters. In short: Capcom could have made more money in Street Fighter V if they added Dee Jay and did right by him.
@19zach75
@19zach75 2 года назад
Dee Jay is a great character. Not your run-of-the-mill fighter who's just there to get beat up on. Capcom seemed biased when it comes to developing him...a Jamaican kickboxer who fights in a rhythmic style, as opposed to twin kung-fu fighters. I like Yun/Yang as well BUT, the SF universe had plenty of Kung-Fu type fighters already.

@jy61

Kickboxing as a whole, outside of Muay Thai which is Thai Kickboxing, was essentially just Karate with some boxing elements. We already had 2 Karate characters and a Thai kickboxer. There was also already a boxer. For Chinese Kung Fu, which is incredibly diverse in comparison due to being such a broad term, was only covered by Chun Li. The twins covered Bajiquan, while Chun Li was just generically labeled Chinese Kenpo and doesn't really have any notable moves from any particular style. In terms of fighting style diversity, the twins actually would have brought more.

Not only great but in retrospect (and in my opinion) it was great to have a black character that was not a “thug”, “brute” , “second fiddle” or “bad guy”. It was not something you saw very often (streets of rage also got the memo) at the time. I also loved that he gave you lots of good answers. I agree. I love in SFV that they brought back Birdie. However, I'm not a fan of his back story of him becoming a fat joke. Meanwhile Cody breaks out of jail and becomes mayor. Capcom should stop dancing around the idea of having a true new black character and just do it. Ryu and Chun-li with hip-hop downloadable alternate outfits. I do like how SFV brought Rashid into the mix. I think they were smart giving him a personality which goes against many stereotypes believed in the West.

I loved seeing a Jamaican character in the Street Fighter series. The biggest issue i have with DJ is that the developers really didn't have enough information (or didn't try) to really expand on him. Maybe hired a voice actor that can speak Patios for authenticity. Also, as a dj/fighter, Deejay could have been utilized in so many ways. DJ could have trained Sean Matsuda when he was rejected by Ken Masters. Brazilian and Jamaican cultures have many similarities. This would cause Sean to create his own style of karate that is effective. He could have also linked up with Elena to help build schools. Even jokingly meeting up with Dudley to see if he can kick. Those are just my thoughts.

Dee Jay is my favorite fighting game character and when people ask why it's simple. As Goddard put it, I just wanted to play as a black character who wasn't one of the worst stereotypes you could invent at the time. Unfortunately, his treatment throughout the franchise as a whole hurts my soul, especially when compared to a certain blonde hair/blue eyes petite lady that garners more top billing than some of the original World Warriors themselves! Don't even get me started on the sole KoF team that hasn't been seen since 1998!! 😩

A convo no one wants to have. Additionally, Sean is a weak ass Dan. Shit makes me mad that the Black characters in this franchise are weak or the stereotype that is Balrog. And the one time they could’ve got a guy cool and not weak he got transformed into Rufus in SF4!

Growing up as a Black kid in the 90's, we hardly ever seen any characters or heros that looked like us. When I seen Dee Jay in SSF2, it made me so incredibly happy. He's the reason I saved my allowance to buy the game on Sega and Super Nintendo. 9x's outta 10 when I played it was as him. It felt good to be included.

Dee jay is a great character and is also one of my favorite. I love his machine gun upper and the jack knife kick....or whatever you call it, it is sad that some character have lost their popularity due to some reason. But, I just hope that the franchise will give these characters a reboot in someways. Maybe in the next street fighter game?....street fighter 6?🤔 just saying...

DeeJay my favorite from the four new fighters. Still is to this day. That part about Yin and Yang originally being in SSF2 is new to me. Nothing against them; but I think DeeJay and Fei Long were the better choices.

I like how Dee Jay's music is fairly popular by SF4 - Cammy's win quote against him mentions that one of her friends is a fan of his. It's a shame that they never really further developed his backstory and motivations the way they did with other characters. According to that roster leak, he'll be back for SF6, so I'm curious about what they'll do with him.

Great vid as usual. I discovered you about 6 months ago. You're my FAVORITE YT influencer. Especially when it comes to games. Im sorry.I dont engage on other platforms. I watch YT alot. Im black, I play retro games / fighting / beatem ups / Wii U advocate/ Mario is 👑 etc AND Madden, 2k, GTA BOTW etc We're out here. Your SSF2 , SOR , TMNT, BATTLETOADS!!! The Co-OP coop beatemups. They was the cheapest games in the Arcade, you just had to be good to make your money stretch. Any way.... I digress. I just wanted to let you know someone like me watches and appreciates your content. I could say alot more about how much I appreciate your skillfulness but its a Yt comment 🤷🏿 Thank you

I liked Deejay. His stage had cool music. I liked the "maximum" in his design. My fav new challenger was obviously cami. I think SF should do a dream match type thing like kof. Have as many characters as possible. But I don't need more deejay in current games or anything. Maybe have him in the background as an announcer/presenter, or a famous musician, or with his own line of work out/gyms. It'd be cool to see him tied up with sagat or friendly with him. And Ken too, since they compete in the same circles it seems.

Ah yes Dee Jay, the titular new SF character of 1993. He was certainly a fresh addition to the roster of characters at the time but unfortunately, like T Hawk, has since been relegated to that of a half-forgotten midcard fighter. His appearance in the animated movie was a mere cameo; his absence from the SF 2 V animated series was hardly missed. In the case of the former, it seemed as though the creators just wanted to fit him in somewhere because he served no real purpose as far as plot device was concerned. As a playable character, I always found him to be a little slow and, despite his array of attacks, difficult to master. I would personally like to see a documentary on some of the more obscure/lesser known characters such as Rainbow Mika or Sodom.
