You missed the whole point of the song.. the hooker was a lost soul that was saved by the preacher. That's what he left behind. She changed her ways and taught her son the Bible, and he became a preacher.. she went on to live a loving and good life. We all will die, but it's the life we lived and love we gave that matters. You were way too obsessed with the term hooker and never got away from that in your mind.

Yes I hope he reads our comments as this is a good story about life. The hooked was given the blood stained Bible from the preacher that died in bus. N this preacher told the congregation of his mother ( the hooker) that read the Bible to him n he became a preacher

Most reactors miss the meaning. The farmer, the teacher, and the preacher all had legacies to pass down. The hooker didn't have a legacy at first until she had a son who she read the blood-stained Bible to. He became a preacher, and this was her legacy.

Mercy was granted in the song so that the woman could change her life and raise her young son in a moral fashion. The irony is that he became a preacher in a way replacing the preacher that passed. Or at least that is my point of view on it. I love this song, it almost always makes me cry.
@SickGirlRocks

I don’t know why people overthink this song. It’s not what you take when you leave this world behind it’s what you leave behind you when you go. The preacher left the love for God with the hooker. She was saved and she passed that love onto her son who became a preacher and passed that love of God onto his parishioners. Be an example of the good news as Christians we are tasked with bringing the news of Jesus Christ our savior to the lost that they might be saved. It really is the most important thing in life. Even if you can only do it by being an example living your life for Jesus in the best way a sinner can.

Great reaction. I was one of the slower thinkers when this song came out. I took it to mean the preacher was asking the lady of the night if she can see the promised land (as her life was ebbing away) and that he gave her the Bible to hold for whatever comfort it might provide her. So I loved the twist (well, it was a twist for me at least, LOL) at the end. Such an OMG moment at the time.

This is a song that tells us that no one is beyond the reach of God. As Christians we spread the Word not knowing how it may impact somebody’s life for Him. The simple gesture of handing a woman of ill repute a Bible led her to raising a son who would go on to leading others to Christ. We don’t know why God take some and leaves others that’s His decision. When June Carter Cash died in May of 2003 many of her fans were surprised cause she was an example of budding health whereas her husband Johnny Cash had had health problems on and off in the latter years of his life. But June who was healthier died first. They say Johnny Cash couldn’t stand life without his beloved wife June Carter and he died less than four months later.

It amazes me how so many reactors miss this song's point. When the preacher says to the hooker... can't you see the promise land... it is supposed to make you think she is dying. If she were to survive... she wouldn't see the promise land. If you are comprehending the song's words... you are meant to be surprised it was the Preacher that died. Which is why the story in the end is told by a preacher.

Two of them were searching for lost souls: The Preacher was searching for souls to save. The "Lady of the Night", who was searching for her soul, her purpose. She found it, when the Preacher gave her his Bible, she understood and taught His Word to her son, who in the end, became a Preacher himself. "It's not what you take....."
@cynthiachessani6788
@cynthiachessani6788 Год назад
My impression of the hooker is that the lost souls she was looking for were her "clients", not her own soul. Surviving the crash and having the bible changed her life snd changed her heart.
@ronaldnash5394
@ronaldnash5394 Год назад
The preacher passed the Bible to the hooker, who read it to her son who became a preacher. In essence, the preacher helped a lost soul turn the teachings read to her son, and by him becoming a preacher, he has the ability to reach many more lost souls.

Just in case some did not catch it... The 4th Cross (the one that was not there) would have belonged to the hooker! She lived - and this is my opinion on the story of the song = The Preacher did NOT preach to the Hooker. All he did was- he got her to think about something... He asked her a simple question about an absolute truth: "Can't you see the promised land?" Referencing what Jesus Christ our Lord said: "Thy Kingdom Come..." Definition = That absolutely, and most assuredly, know this - The Kingdom of My Father IS GOING to come!!!. This got her to think and realize that her Sin of desire to please her flesh (and the flesh of others) was going to NOT allow her to see this Kingdom which is coming! And then, she then RIGHTED her life and took that "Blood Stained" bible given to her and began to read it! Then she shared the contents of The Word of God in that Blood Stained bible with her son, who eventually became a preacher who now is sharing the Good News with others! And... That is what the Hooker left behind!!! After The preacher left behind the Good News as he was dying, to the hooker! God still had a purpose for the hooker, even though she did not know it yet. He wanted her, and it came to show, that she really down deep, wanted Him as well!

I believe that it also gives a broader picture of why things happen in such a way that may sometimes seem to the human mind as unfair. God has a plan for every life and that means there are many different puzzle pieces that must fit together for the plan as a whole to come outright. Even Jesus had a few questionable people in His family tree, but how he got here didn't change who He was or keep Him from accomplishing the purpose God had for His life. Happy Resurrection Day, everybody!

I don't know if this started in the South, but believe it has become a Southern "thing", but families will erect small roadside crosses where a loved one has died (usually in a car wreck/accident). Hence, Three Wooden Crosses on the side of the road.

I remember thinking when I first heard the song, "So there's the preacher, and the teacher, and the farmer, and the hooker, that's four. So the 'three wooden crosses, why there's not four of them' part kind of makes sense, but who was driving? What about the fifth one?" It occurs to me now one of them could've been driving, but I was thinking there HAD to be a fifth to be the driver. Also, something a little sadder to note, Randy Travis is 63, which is a little young to be having the health complications and emergencies he's been having. He's been in and out of the hospital a few times. That being said, this is a good song, both to react to and in general. I also love and respect the overall message of the song.

It's maybe a hard thing to grasp but the question of why some we consider worthy die and others don't goes back to," he's not willing that's why should perish". If you die without Jesus salvation, you're dead forever. Better the preacher dies than the lost soul. As a Christian my faith teaches me that death doesn't exist anymore. As Paul said," to live is Christ. To die is gain"

You are usually so perceived to the stories but seem to have gotten enamored with the performance and missed the last verse. The Hooker ends up cleaning up her act, marries, and raises her child in such a godly house that he becomes a preacher himself. In doing so, turns a tragic story into a story of redemption that potentially leads to many others being taught morality and godliness.

An interesting take from comments on another reaction video to this song. Why would a hooker be going to Mexico? Perhaps she was pregnant with her son and headed to Mexico to get an abortion. The accident stopped that and the bible helped her turn her life around for her soon to be born son to become the second preacher in the song.
