An under appreciated aspect of Organic farming is the idea that plant and animal health are correlated with soil health (Ie absence of symptoms does not equal health, inner vitality does); this was Sir Albert Howard’s (originator of ‘the method’) main thesis. This video points out the benefits to us of eating foods with activated natural defenses, a positive trait of organic foods, but imo the problem with non organic is not the pesticides directly but the fact that the pesticides allow a grower to get away with growing food in an ‘unhealthy’ soil. From this point of view, modern Organics that substitutes ‘acceptable’ organically derived substances for the synthetic versions is only very slightly better than non organic products. Ie they are still letting the grower get away with growing in a suboptimal soil. Produce grown in poor soil is poor produce. The best, though approximate, guide to the presence of vitality is still taste. While nibbling of crops might confer some beneficial effects on the consumer of such products in the form of elevated levels of particular substances of interest, that is far less important than consuming food grown in a healthy soil. Such plants and animals do not attract pathogens; pathogens that preferentially remove weak plants and animals, and proliferate in their presence (there are limits to this). We do not want to be consuming weak and susceptible products. Those desirable substances may also by elevated in unnibbled products grown in a living health soil. Determining if that is the case would require more detailed study. For many organic growers, and I am an Organic producer of 40 years (though I no longer use that label), saying ‘damaged product is good for you’ is often ‘arguing for your weakness’.

If you like fruits and veggies, I have one recommendation. DIVERSIFY! Don't eat 6 apples or 6 bananas. Eat 1 apple, 1 banana, some pineapple, various berries etc. Your gut microbiome wants the diversity. You will also be more likely to hit your needed micronutrient goals that way. Don't eat only spinach or romaine, buy that spinach mix and throw tomatoes, peppers and whatever else on it. I usually buy my favorites and then cycle in whatever else is on sale.

I felt similarly about organic fruit and vegetables, aside from them being virtually unaffordable. I ate an apple a day (non-organic) for over twenty years, I loved them and they worked, (I was sharing a house with a GP (lol)), then one day I had absolutely no appetite for them and I've barely eaten an apple since. I still can't afford organic fruit and veg. In 2008 I was diagnosed with Graves Disease (from which I fully recovered after about 9 months on neomercazole). At the time I was living in a rural area in Australia in a house surrounded by paddocks that were routinely sprayed with glyphosphate for weeds. I woke up one morning knowing I had to move.

Yes it brings you some lot fibers (around 7%) but you can have fibers in other plants without the sugar/insulin spike...Also drieng processes make the fruits loose nutrients, so why don´t have a bit higher volume of fresh, nutrient-densed vegetables etc. instead of a sugar bomb? greetings from Germany

First of all, the pesticides are not only on the outside of the vegetables but are actually grown into the plant - like glyphosphate. 2nd dried fruit is the must unhealthy way to eat fruit. Sugar is many times multiplied in dried fruit - bringing on many health problems - liver disease, cancer etc. Americans eat far too much sugar and that is w hy they are the unhealthiest people in the world.

"Dried fruits also contain more fiber and more of the antioxidants called phenols than fresh fruit, per ounce. Fiber fights heart disease, obesity, and some types of cancer (although its possible protective effect against colon cancer is controversial). People with diets rich in plant phenols have lower rates of heart disease, diabetes, several kinds of cancer, and possibly degenerative brain diseases. So, by all means keep eating dried fruits: they are full of healthy nutrients. But avoid the added sugars, and keep track of calories." - Anthony Komaroff, M.D. Editor in Chief, Harvard Health Letter

The skin issue applies to fruit. It makes sense because it’s exposed to the sun. With root vegetables I’d opt for peeling them - there’s too much bacteria in soil (E.Coli) that also sits on the skin of root veggies.

Question for Dr Li. Isn’t one of the reasons gluten is causing leaky gut and issues linked to autoimmune disease due to the glyphosate that’s used in the US to dry it? Hence when we eat pasta/bread is parts of Europe where glyphosate is illegal to use, we have no sensitivity issues.
@divdep3612
@divdep3612 Год назад
Here in UK they still use Glyphosate on their crops and there are many cases of gluten intolerance or celiac - so yes the Glyphosate is the major issue now. But also processed refined wheat flour without the hull also makes it harder to process/digest the wheat gluten and can cause autoimmune issues, leaky gut, diabetes etc as it basically gets stuck in the small intestine causing damage and is absorbed rapidly into the blood hence high blood sugar levels. I order my wholewheat flour organic from abroad and feel much better. Also, you can see videos on Glyphosate by Vandana Shiva who explains why it is causing many health issues.

Organic production is so much more than a lack of pesticides. It's as much about building healthy soil. Organic food can have more good stuff as the necessary elements to synthesise them are present in healthy soil on rich subsoil. Conventional agriculture basically treats soil as an inert growing medium for fossil carbon derived fertiliser. So much more going on than NPK.
@JSabh

Yeah, I grow cannabis and we are apparently much more educated on horticulture than most "scientists". I train my plants to produce more buds and more secondary metabolites by bending and tieing down the stems as they grow and also focus on the microbiome in the soil. Some growers top plants, meaning cutting off the new growth and two more grow in its place. It is all about promoting secondary metabolites to produce the flavor and effect you want. Terpines are vital and are triggered by some stressors to produce more of one than the other. Basically, take your pesticide plants and train them to stress and you get the same benefits. There are many factors from the PH of the water to amino acids and creatine being used in place of nitrogen. Plants actually love creatine and it saves the nitrogen for later. Thats great due to nitrogen being very easy to wash out of the soil or deplete quite quickly.

The small differences in nutrient content detected are biologically plausible and mostly relate to differences in production methods.” . . A 2010 review also by Dangour found: “From a systematic review of the currently available published literature, evidence is lacking for nutrition-related health effects that result from the consumption of organically produced foodstuffs.” . . A 2012 review by Smith-Spangler et. al. found: “After analyzing the data, the researchers found little significant difference in health benefits between organic and conventional foods. No consistent differences were seen in the vitamin content of organic products, and only one nutrient - phosphorus - was significantly higher in organic versus conventionally grown produce (and the researchers note that because few people have phosphorous deficiency, this has little clinical significance).” .

much of the "pretty" stuff also lacks other nutrients... grown in hydroponic chemical soup (not the real hydroponic with fish... but with a chemical soup) the issue is it lacks the fungi relation around the roots in the soil when there is no soil... yes it is easier and looks prettier but I bet many have tasted the difference between a store tomato and a homegrown tomato... one tastes like water... the other has a rich flavor... guess what how you grow it MATTERS

It's weird that you would say that organic food is beautiful food because in my grocery store, Winco as well as Walmart, the organic food is less than in looks. A lot of times it got bruises, little holes, and its wrinkled. It's just not as fresh. It just doesn't look as good as the other vegetables. I'm actually researched it and people have been modifying foods of all kinds since men started eating plants. Early Man liked the sweeter fruits so they would only eat those and when they drop the core or seed, it regrows that particular type and multiply that by millions and you've got better fruit coming up everywhere. And then when we found out, we could do that in masses, then we became engineers of a product. So there really isn't a whole lot of problem with GMO compared to the other problems of the world like pesticides and the like.

Organic food tastes better. I grown up in farm, we grown out food on natural fertilizers like pig manure and didnt use pesticides on our own food. we used them only on produce we were growing for selling. and I will be honest - organic food tastes like food I used to eat in a farm. That reason alone makes me often buy some organic veggies- because its delicious.

I doubt that much of what I've eaten in the last 60 plus years was organic, but I'm still here. You just need to be thoughtful of what you buy. An example would be if you see a vegetable or fruit for sale that is not in season where you live, that means it's been imported and will have all sorts of chemicals added to keep it looking fresh many days after it was picked. Frozen veg for instance are "fresher" than fresh veg because they are frozen immediately at the source of picking. Keep away from sugar and processed ready to eat meals. Drink plenty of water as that flushes your system. Don't be conned into thinking bottled water is superior to tap water. Bottled water in usually sold in plastic containers and might have been on a shelf for who knows how long ! And last but not least. Live your life and don't bloody worry about what these "gurus" think they know.

You can afford it. Just buy a little less. Also organic does not last as long so they always mark that down. Look for it. I personally pay less for organic than other food because I always look for the marked down organic going out of date. You can also make more money somehow or grow your own. Don't limit yourself by a poor mentality.

The organic movement is so desperately trying to get some questionable science behind their claims. After watching this video I would like to give a few inspirational points for people who might be interested: 1) There is no organic strawberry production without the use of poisonous (mostly) synthetic chemical pesticides, except in your grandmothers garden. It is legal and common practice and it is ridiculous that the organic followers deny that. 2) The nutritional and health problems that we have is that some people eat too much and some too little and not that some cultivation method yields a little more or less of an insignificant chemical. 3) I would not follow the advice to get secondary plant metabolites by eating extraordinary amounts of dried fruits. The downsides from excess sugar is usually far more significant than the upside of a trendy chemical. 4) There is a new trendy chemical or superfood every day. It makes you younger, kills cancer and promotes bowl movements. Unless you have a rare metabolic disease, let´s stay calm, don´t let them freak you out and follow a normal balanced diet - just use your common sense!
