I grew up in New Orleans, have lived other places around the country and now back home for 30 years. Louisiana and New Orleans have problems yet the people are happy for the most part. Cost of living is low, people are friendly, and the culture is everything. Everywhere else I lived felt sterile and boring in comparison. We’re ok with people not wanting to come here - we don’t want to be Florida.

Those in power need to invest far more in the education system alongside programs that alleviate the crushing poverty so many of Louisiana's families face. It's harder to learn when you're frequently hungry and constantly stressed. The epigenetic effects of those circumstances are not only potentially lifelong, but also potentially transmissible across generations. It's sad.

@@travismcnamara8919 I lived in Louisiana for 50 years. I live in Georgia now. Your suggested remedies are no more than worn out (and misguided) socialist talking points. Your suggested remedies are what make Louisiana poor. Louisiana’s state government budget (and just state government) spends $7,800 per person. Georgia spends $2,500 per resident. Georgia has superior schools, roads, etc. Your suggested remedies simply subsidize and create more poor people. Your remedies make things worse. Subsidizing leeches on society creates more leeches on society. Stop funding the Democrat Party voter base and Louisiana will improve its lot.

I moved back to Louisiana after living in Boston for 20+ years. It was the right choice for me. The main thing I think you totally failed to mention is that Louisiana in general and New Orleans specifically have a rich history. New Orleans was the cultural capital in the 19th century. It was considered the northern most Caribbean city. A total cultural melting pot. Antoine’s restaurant, for example, could seat 1200 people in its lavish dining rooms. It STILL serves many of the same dishes that were served in 1860. There is an amazing and discrete sophistication there that most cities in the United States can only dream of having.

As a NOLA Native, it's a cultural backwater. You might like having to reach back almost 200 years for a time Louisiana was relevant, personally I don't think pageantry primarily for tourists outweighs the regressive attitudes that come along with it. Racists, homophobes, religious lunatics, and just generally some of the most ignorant, hateful people in the country. That's what holds Louisiana back.

I live one state over in Texas. People on your survey must’ve never been there. Louisiana has great food, culture, lots of things to do. Lafayette and the Covington/Mandeville areas would be my choice of places to live. New Orleans is great to visit, walk around the French Quarter, eat good food, check out all the old houses and buildings, people watch. Lake Charles has beautiful full fledged resort casinos, great even for non- gamblers. Louisiana has its own culture and history, there’s no lack of culture where would anyone that’s been there think that? Lack of infrastructure- Louisiana like many states suffers from this, although they have been steadily working on improvements such as repaving their interstates. Perhaps if the federal government wasn’t busy funding wars and other nonsense they could step in and fix up U.S. highways and interstates.

Cajun born and raised . Been here my whole life. I will tell you this. The politics are as corrupt as can be . Majority of the crime is in the big cities like Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Jobs are not plentiful outside the big cities. Poverty is getting worse here. On a positive note. At least where I’m from which is below New Orleans around the Houma , Thibodaux and along Hwy 1 south you won’t find friendlier folks. Yep you may not understand that thick Cajun accent but they will open their home to you and you will not leave their home hungry . When a disaster strikes ( Hurricanes and floods) within a day you will have an army of good folks setting up a jambalaya pot and all the fixings to feed those affected and in need. And this is just from locals doing this on there own dime or small local business owners. Neighbor will help neighbors because we all know the struggle. One thing that hurts is that when a hurricane hits us is all the talk about “poor New Orleans’ it’s as though no other cities exist in Louisiana. Hurricane Ida did devastating damage to our area and there are still repairs being made almost 2 yrs later . Some peoples lives will never be the same. There is huge room for improvement here and change. But the people are genuine and good hearted. Even the poorest among us.

The most intelligent comment I read today. I live in a tiny coastal town in NW Florida and that's what happened to our sleepy little peaceful town. People decided to move here but decided to bring everything from the cities they left with them. The big grocery store on every corner, fast food crappy food, traffic, traffic and more traffic. Stop lights, more stop lights, a million golf carts and bicycles clogging up sidewalks and our small town roads. We now live in some city folks idea of a beach town with every convenience known to man and all the rudeness they could pack up and bring with them.

I’m a native of Louisiana and have lived here all of my 63 years. There is no other place I’d rather live than right here. We’ve traveled and visited many states and a few countries but we have never seen a culture or group of people more caring and friendly than our own. Yes, we’re very unfortunate to get hurricanes and some flooding but things are much better with the “Morganza to the Gulf” levee system. Housing is competitive here and even more so since we have so many families that have lost their homes to hurricane Ida. The job situation isn’t as horrible as you make it sound. A great deal of the problem started with Covid, people didn’t work and many don’t want the jobs that are available. We live in South Louisiana close to the Gulf of Mexico so the Seafood Industry is still a huge thing here. In reference to Six Flags, yes it’s vacant and probably always will be. It’s situated in a bad area to begin with which I believe is near marshland. New Orleans is the most popular city due to tourism but we have many wonderful cities and communities throughout the state. Crime here is just like everywhere else and not as bad as most areas. As far as Hospitals are concerned, there are three within 30 miles of my home and I’m in a small community. Poor healthcare is everywhere not just in our State. Healthcare systems are businesses geared towards revenue just like any other business. Physicians can no longer do what they need to do due to Insurance, especially Medicare and Medicaid. The next time you want to talk about us, please come for a visit. You will definitely “pass a good time” with the Real people of Louisiana and you’ll eat some of the very best seafood.🦐🦀🦞🖤🧡

This video suffers from the same problem most videos like it do. Extreme over generalizations. You take the worst of the rural properties and the urban properties and apply them statewide. Louisiana is more than New Orleans and Baton Rouge pigeon holed in a poor rural area. Covington/Mandeville (the North Shore) and the Lake Charles area are great areas that very few of the problems listed.

There are places in Louisiana that are amazingly beautiful and nostalgic that are like nothing on this list. Natchitoches is a small college town in North Louisiana where the movie Steel Magnolias was made. It is considered one of the best places to retire because of its beauty, resources, and cost of living.

Of course we live in a relatively small city where it’s all about family, music, festivals, and fun - so easy to make new friends. And I never understood why they told me no, I'm an American I can live where ever I damn well please in the USA. I live in an area of LA that is 80ft above see level. In all the years I've lived here, never once flooded. Infrastructure was pretty bad when I first moved. But in the past few years fiber has been installed, new power substations, and roads have all been greatly improved. The hospital and medical facilities around me are great. Compared to the high prices around the nations capital, I am saving a huge amount of money living here. I'm still blown away as to how cheap good food is as well. Everyone is friendly. I’m originally from the northeast but my family moved to Louisiana when I was little. I was basically raised down here in a small town, nothing to do but get in trouble. I eventually moved away to Colorado but a bad car accident left me needing help from my family and ultimately moved back. Now however I live in Mandeville, just across the lake from New Orleans and Metairie. The Northshore area as it’s known is the best little bubble compared to the rest of the state: infrastructure is constantly improving, there’s decent paying jobs (or you could just work across the lake in New Orleans metro area which is only 30-45 mins), housing prices are way better than most of the country, and they actually have amazing schools (mostly Mandeville and Madisonville). While there isn’t a whole bunch to do, the communities here offer a lot. Here’s how it works in this area anyway, if you have a good paying job: you’ll live in an amazing house with a big yard and can pay for all sorts of amenities and activities, as well as have the money to travel alot.

New orleans is a city that formed with bloodshed and infighting. The french descendants with wealth haven't made education and schools of quality in black communities. They neglected the black population and gave them hopelessness. The only thing black kids have there is music . Louis armstrong the singer was a troubled youth , but after someone gave him a trumpet he eventually became a icon . The city and state has not given the black children there resources to dream of a better future. As a black teenager, 20 years ago i was shocked and terrified to see the slums of new orleans , it looked like prisons for blocks on blocks . Not much good can come from those conditions.

My people are from VillePlatte Louisiana, when New Orleans has hurricanes by the time it moves up over land it dies down causes a lot of wind and rain only but VillePlatte was relatively safe from the destruction, when Katrina hit by the time it passed over VillePlatte my family got a lot of wind and rain, I have several family members there and only one house had some tiles blown off, that's all that happened.

Born and raised there, moved away for work, 24 years USN. Ended up staying in area of last duty station cause our kids and grandchildren are here. Still call it home, miss it, go every chance I can. I have literally traveled around the world, but it's the one place that I have very special feelings for. People are great and family is what it's all about. Maybe it's a southern thing but home can never be replaced, you can always go home. Nothing like tiger stadium on Saturday night! GEAUX TIGERS!

My friends and brothers and I must have grown up in a Baton Rouge bubble. We went to really good public schools and we lived really comfortable lives and as far as things to do outside of New Orleans, Baton Rouge is the place to be during football season. There are two football powerhouses in Baton Rouge, Louisiana State University and Southern University. During football season, Baton Rouge becomes one big party town. As far as medical care is concerned, Baton Rouge has some of the best hospitals in the country. Our Lady of the Lake, the Woman's Hospital, and the Ochner Clinic offer great medical care.

James-I agree regarding health care. I enjoy listening to Briggs, and most of his information is accurate (even if he twists it some to be entertaining.) His understanding of health care in Louisiana is misleading. The statistics show that there are actually too many hospital beds and too many doctors per the population. particularly in New Orleans, but also Baton Rouge and Shreveport. The reasons are historic: The New Orleans metro area alone has 3 medical schools (Tulane, LSU, and Ochsner/UQ) and will soon have a fourth. (Xavier) Additional hospitals were built after Katrina when the state shamed the federal government into coming up with a significant amount of "guilt" money. However, New Orleans is still about 15% smaller than it was before Katrina, at 390,000. The metro area is about the same as pre-Katrina at 1.2 million. That means there are more doctors and hospitals per capita than any other major metropolitan area. And, Louisiana recognizes the Affordable Care Act, (Obama care) unlike most other southern states. The perception of bad health care in Louisiana may exist, but it is clearly not reality.

I relocated from CA to LA, Pearl River, for a relationship in May 2005. I was transported back in time. Mr. Giddry was the first man I met, nicest man, but do not play Remember The Titans on his TV (I'll not be explaining). There was a man who used to strut up and down Interstate 59 in cut off daisey dukes and a tight white tank top. I was naive as hell and didn't know why, it was Summer and I thought maybe he's dressed to keep himself cool. He disappeared by July. Turns out he was found in his trailer with his throat slit. Local cops deemed it "suicide". I evacuated for Hurricane Katrina and never went back. Absolutely surreal time in my life, but I loved my time learning a simple life on the Honey Island Swamp.

I moved to Louisiana last year (2022) it is HORRIBLE in the city that I’m in. I will definitely be moving again. They do not care about children. Teachers and seemingly parents do not care about the future of their children. The non profit organizations in the city that I am in. They have the appearance of helping the people but in reality they are only lining their own pockets. It’s grimey. Several people die here DAILY. My son’s GPA has dropped. We are definitely leaving again. The environment is so negative and nasty. A lot of jealous hearted people. I would say visit but do not stay, especially if you have children.

I agree with many points on the list. I regularly visit a close friend who lives in Louisiana. She rarely visits us: despite a college degree, she works several jobs to make ends meet. She works for a last resort school, where faculty members are often absent. She is trying to fix her house that has water and termite damage. She hopes her car doesn’t get wrecked by the poor roads, and she complains of corruption and declining services. She’d never leave LA: she’s sticking around for her family and the culture.

I was born and raised in small-town Louisiana. I wanted nothing more than to get out, there were just no opportunities outside of the healthcare sector. I'm an ambitious person, I didn't want to be stuck working a service job for $9 an hour forever. I left at 23 and never moved back. After a brief stent in Texas and 6 years in the military I'm now settled in Atlanta where I own my own home and have a well paying job. I wouldn't mind living in New Orleans or Lafayette if there were better job opportunities and better infrastructure, I do miss the culture.

Shreveport is in a good spot because in terms of water it’s some of the cleanest in the state. (Not saying much but still) they also have access to better medical facilities in Dallas and Texarkana. However, cancer alley usually is the stretch of the Mississippi River that runs from just north of Baton Rouge to just south of New Orleans where the massive chemical plants are that pollute the water really bad.

I’m from Louisiana. Lived in and out of New Orleans for years. Everyplace is unique with its own culture and we pick at each other for it on a massive level. However, we tend to our own down here. People need help we all come together and help. Never really saw that anywhere else I’ve been and I’ve lived all over the country and in Mexico. We tend to our own cause we feel it’s our duty to do so. Plus the rest of the country don’t give a damn about us anyways. Look at every hurricane and storm and natural phenomena that’s happened to us. Plus it’s still fairly easy and cheap to live in. Depending on where you go. Furthermore we have community here, religious or not. Our culture revolves around freedom, family, friends, and food. Plus throw beer/drinks in there. And here we are fairly happy. We work to live not the other way around. Our ancestors and religions are our identity and culture. Most this day and age don’t care about that. However we have more homegrown religion than anywhere else.

I live in South Mississippi. Hurricane Katrina didn't actually hit New Orleans as many say, although the storm flooded the city. Katrina actually hit south Mississippi. After the storm, the trend of people moving from the New Orleans area to south Mississippi increased dramatically. Now, most of what was once beautiful farms is now subdivision after subdivision. They move here to escape flooding and crime.

New Orleans is not representative of the state of Louisiana. I have lived here all my life. I live in Cajun country, Raging Cajuns. Our culture is great people, great foods, great music, great history, great festivals and the list goes on. Yes, like every other state in the union, we have our fair share of problems. I would not live in New Orleans, but there is Chicago,Los Angeles, San Francisco, Detroit where crime rages high as well. Louisiana people are warm, friendly and caring. It’s sad that you chose to degrade our state. Spend some time here and you will find we don’t have web toes, alligators as pets and for the most part, don’t cruise up and down the bayou looking for food. We shop in regular supermarkets. There are those who do make a living hunting and fishing, but most of us do it for recreation. Get all your facts straight by observation and not goggle.

Briggs, I invite you to St. Tammany Parish, the Northshore (of Lake Pontchartrain). Pretty much your list doesn’t exist here other than 10. The threat of hurricanes every summer and the constant tornado warnings all winter get tiresome. *I’ll even pay your hotel. Also, we’re not “overflowing with conservatism.” The state overall is purple., although St. Tammany Parish is very Red. It’s a great place. Moved here 25 years ago and haven’t looked back. We stay out of NOLA and Baton Rouge, now that I’ve retired early and don’t need to work in NOLA anymore. Our crime is EXTREMELY low, homes are mostly very nice and a much greater value than I could get in many other states including where I used to live in VT. Schools in this parish are excellent (it’s really tough to rate whole states on education when people live in particular counties or parishes, which is how schools are funded in this country). Same goes for crime. A few notorious areas skew a perception of the whole state. Our poverty rate is at the national average as well in St. Tammany, and median home value is $218,000, with a median household income of $68,900. Both are above the national medians IIRC. To eliminate the people stereotypes, let me share with you the kind of people who showed up for our jury duty I just did here in St. Tammany: a biochemist, 2 mechanical engineers, a Chevron executive, an oilfield geological engineer, a financial planner, 2 teachers, a clinical nursing supervisor, a NASA rocket scientist (2 big NASA facilities nearby), 2 law enforcement officers, a Corps of Engineers surveyor, a highway planner, an advertising executive, 3 small business owners, a banker, and a construction company foreman, lab research assistant, dentist. It goes on like that, and that’s just what I can remember. Kind of breaks the stereotypes of who people outside think lives here. I moved down to this very unique part of Louisiana 25 years ago knowing that the NOLA accent, culture and food would be very different, but still basically blind. I’ve not regretted it, other than the oppressive heat and humidity 6 months a year.

I live in Covington,La which is in St. Tammany parish and it is conservative ( which is a very good thing by the way). What skews La 's issues in many respects is the Cities: New Orleans ,Baton Rouge , Shreveport ,Monroe are all Democractic shitholes that keep electing the same crooks over and over and expect different positive outcomes. This occurs not only in La but in just about every big city in this country. St.Tammany residents in many respects are highly educated and affluent ,the schools are very good and crime is low. We choose to live here and we love it!
