Cgi animation was still a new thing back then so it was torture of those who had no experience with that early rise of the new medium. The studio was working on prince of Egypt at the time which was a 2d animation which many were most experienced in. Maybe the death of shrek original voice actor/ comedian may have been what drove the change of shrek design Tho it paid off in the end
I feel so honored to be able to say I was there on the first day it was released. It felt beyond magical, and I think I loved it more than most of the Shrek films lmao
I always thought this Shrek test footage felt like one of those early NVIDIA graphics card benchmarking test demos. Creepy as it may be, it definitely invoked a very strong sense of nostalgia in me to see these types of shiny rubbery CG FMV-likes again.
Ironic that this version was deemed too edgy, when it's actually a lot closer to the design for the children's book Shrek is based off of. I can see that it doesn't exactly translate from flat scribbles to cgi though. Still, it's cool that this was found.
@@NaudVanDalen i'm actually saying the direct opposite. What I have interpreted this person as having said is that a pre-rendered movie a.k.a. Shrek Is more impressive or crazy than two real time rendered video games which is obviously not exactly a fair comparison.
I wonder if the new shrek movie will touch on this with his dad being this shrek. Getting over fathers truma and understanding his past and why he is the way he is.
Can’t help but see massive similarities between test footage Shrek and the Bergens in the Trolls franchise. I’m glad we got the Shrek we did in the end.
This is test footage so the final design for creepy shrek would look slightly different and probably less extreme. Also I would really like to see this version of shrek. I've always been a fan of horror and this looks really interesting.
Fun fact: One of the people who worked on the short actually confirmed that this isn't the full short. Apparently it's 2 minutes long according to him.
Unrelated to Shrek, this is the first video I've watched from this version of LIMC; I initially thought it was rebranded when I saw this video in my recommended.
That original 1995 Shrek looks absolutely terrifying and straight up nightmare fuel. I can understand why some may have PTSD from getting *_"Shreked"._*
I'd imagine with the direction change it took, it went from what could've been a publicly forgotten but underrated cult classic, which sounds a lot like The Prince of Egypt, instead it became the genre-altering icon it is. What a story it is too, I'd love to know as much as possible about it's development.
I have a feeling that if I had seen that test footage back in '95 I would have been traumatized by it, I was just 5 years old at that time and I remember early CG shorts looking rather scary to my kid self, Toy Story was the first time I saw computer animated characters that didn't look creepy.
Shrek took a more humane and the world became a lot less grim, like if you look at shrek he looks like someone with some sort of medical problem. Also they made the movie all about Disney/ fairytales and making fun of them, making a comedy film was the best choice ever.
Hello You never know there could be more animation tests out there I'm just saying that there probably is more stuff about this Like that 3 minute version In the original audio
Early Shrek was base in the book but also in Criss Farley in a way they didnt wanted to use that version since in there minds it would ve disrespectfull to him
They fully expected the movie to be the "Bee movie" and ended up with Shrek. Creators of the Bee movie thought they were making Shrek and ended up with the Bee movie.
Been gorging myself in all this early-beta shrek media and i must say: it's sometimes beautiful how we, as a massive digital collective, can preserve and cherish so much from the past. To learn from and most importantly, enjoy it
