Guys, the guest on my show is an absolute legend of Chess, who has made India proud on a global level. It would be great if we can have comments talking about him and about the episode in general, rather than fake accounts commenting random things. Pls let me know if what I'm asking for is unreasonable.

You are right bro. After watching the video I scrolled through comments to engage with some healthy conversation. However, I could only find some fake IDs of cricketers who say some random stuff. I'm surprised that people are even subscribing to their channels thinking they are real! Please block them and ask RU-vid support to give a solution to curb these miscreants. 🙏

Vishy Anand is one of the finest sportsmen this country has ever produced. I often get the feeling he doesn't get the credit he deserves. A true gentleman and a role model on and off the chess table. We are very lucky to be born in the same era and witness Vishy and Ashwin's greatness during our time. Thank you Ash for getting Vishy Anand on the show! Try getting Ian Chappell if it's possible. @@MrHitessh In the early days (late 90s and early 2000s) of Internet Chess Club (ICC) there was a super strong GM with moniker 'Tendulkar'. Many thought it was Vishy Anand's secret second account or English GM Nigel Short's account. Only later was it revealed that it was Svidler. Many interesting stories about Svidler, he was even invited as a guest expert in BBC Test Match Special. He loves test cricket, especially when England plays. Once he did Russian radio commentary for some Ashes test in some obscure Siberian radio. He played in Gibraltar (I think) when the organizer promised him batting lessons and a net practice session...you can search for photos and news links. During one of his commentary sessions some 5 years back he talked about the FC league of Zimbabwe, and gave stats of all their top performers, even hardcore cricket nerds from India wouldn't know a thing about what happens in Zimbabwe cricket. He is a walking, talking encyclopedia of cricket. He even expressed his regrets that chess colleagues from Ind/Eng don't follow cricket as passionately as him, so he can't have debates/discussion with them.

Not a word on how informed Ashwin is, how,in contrast to the crass questions Anand was being repeatedly asked during the WC match in Chennai,Ashwin asked some extremely relevant questions related to formats of both the games and not just delve into the already widely discussed achievements of Vishy. For the 90s kids, it was the Anand-Kramnik rivalry that was the most exciting rivalry following the legendary Kasparov-Karpov one. The Anand-Carlsen battle is between two eras, and it is just the joy of watching them play that is the take away, rather than the contest in itself.
@thinker1680
@thinker1680 3 года назад
I think people underestimate Anand and he is just as humble as he was when he failed to correct the old man on the train. Few examples from this wonderful interview: 1. Just as Anand mentioned that Fisher was responsible for breaking the russian monopoly in Chess, it was Anand who paved the way for Chess in India and Asia. Now India churns out grandmasters routinely. Anand pved the way for that. for Anand to be there still on top is nothing short of mindblowing. Of course he is too nice to take credit for that. 2. The question about rapid chess and why Anand dominates it despite his age: well the correct answer was that Anand is simply on a different level and is a genius when it comes to the shorter forms of Chess. He is one of the Absolute greats ever to have played the game. Its like asking Federer how he manages to defeat opponents despite his age or like asking how Viv Richarda hit all those sixes. But of course Anand wont say that. He stuck to his standard response of “practiced it growing up”. Haha. As if others can get to the same level. 3. Anand was already a legend being rhr first grandmaster the year a young boy called Sachin made his debut in 1989. Sachin then had an illustrious career, and has retired for more than 7 years. And Anand is still going strong successfully competing with people who are multiple decades younger- something that i think Ashwin thought was because Chess was not physical sport. But closer analyais will show that there are not any other examples of such phenomena. Even the great Kasparov retired. Anand’s longevity is in a league of its own and definitely not normal. Attributing it to lesser physicality would be similar to claiming that Sachin played in 200 tests only because he was a batsman and spin bowler ( so less strain). If that were the case, why have others not been able to replicate at the highest level? All in all a great interview. Would be great to see a part 2 focusing on anands preparation routine, his idols while growing up, his thought process when dealing with challenging situations, how he handles loss, how he prepares, how he is able to deal for decades on the road, etc.

Anand is a legend, 5 times world champion, won the unofficial world rapid championship 11 times, one of the greatest chess player of all time. He never resorted to unethical practices like psychologically attacking a player like Kasparov or Carlsen, he played genuine chess. When Anand became GM at 1988, India was a nobody at chess, now India is one of the strongest teams in the world, probably the greatest after Russia. He was my childhood hero, I started playing chess after being inspired by him, thanks a lot Vishy.

Thank you for the fantastic interview @Ashwin. I still remember the day when me and my friends were sitting in Hotel Rajdhani at the Express Avenue Mall, Chennai. Viswanathan Anand and his wife were seated in our adjacent table. Was spellbound to see their simplicity. I mean, if I draw parallels with cricket, he is the Sachin of chess. But, here he was, sitting in a houseful restaurant without a single person noticing him. While I wanted to take a photograph/autograph from the legend, I thought it would be inappropriate to disturb their privacy.

Probably why he's at the top of his game because he's calculating and considering even his answers even before you ask the question. Pretty sure that he would've calculated your questions way before you asked them. Great to see his responses and his honest feedback about his own career and tournaments. Once again, thanks for letting him drive the conversation and you being just a listener. The segment from 30:52 till 33:02 is a golden thing that many ignore in pursuit of getting better at any field. As Vishy said, "It happens or does not happen but you maximize your chances by doing the right things". Also, in one of his earlier lines, he said "The wind was in my favour". Considering both of these things, whatever you all do in any field that you like, at the end of it all just come out happy that you gave your best.

Ashwin should have asked better set of questions to the legend IMO 1) What’s your favourite opening after all these years of playing chess? 2) Do you get on with Gary Kasparov? (there was some needle between the two few years back) 3) Who do you enjoy watching in the current chess world? 4) More questions about Magnus Carlsen and his abilities and other players like Hikaru Nakamura. 5) Question about that famous match against Ivanchuk where he missed obvious checkmate. 6) His experience on WTC which happened in Chennai and how he overcame the defeat which was his lowest point in chess. 7) Questions on Indian GMs. Who does he think can become champion, challenge Carlsen. Nihal Sarin, Praggnanandhaa etc 8) His interest in astronomy. Anand reads a lot about astronomy. 9) About his wife who is his manager and her role in Anand’s success.
