+Drew Williams as far as i know Hopkins also improvised some of the Dialogue first Meeting Starling when he was imprisoned, including that amazing Sound after the Quote "i ate his liver with some faver beans and a nice Chianti..." - fantastic acting!
"I have no plans to call on you Clarice, the world's more interesting with you in it." Goes to show not only was Starling fascinated by Dr. Lecter, but in a way, he was by her, too.
KOHF34 in the books Clarice and lecter both love one another in there own way lecter assure Clarice no harm will come to her from him and Clarice only wants to understand him more so she can get closer its one of those romances that shows that they can never really truly be together because one is a cannibal and the other will try to understand or help him
@John Smith Not just the actress, more people were. Director, producer, etc. I didn't read the novels so maybe it worked there but to me it seems too much as well. They have a mutual respect but she's still "A straight edge" FBI agent, more so than her bosses, so if she can lock Lecter op, she will, as she tells him here and in part 2. And Lector talking about love in Hannibal in the kitchen scene almost ruined it for me. Chopped off his own hand for her, fuck that. He's a psychopath, they handle things differently.
Plus, the determination and calm of Dr. Lector putting his hat on and walking after Dr. Chilton are of a skilfull hunter sure about his pray's fate is sealed. Everything there gives you creeps. The whole scene is a sample of a briiliant directing.
AGhostlyFirefly yes I agree 100%! It’s already an incredibly chilling and creepy ending to a classic film. Brilliant too I might add. It’s even more menacing with the stormy sky and windy palm trees. Not to mention that Director Demme kept the scene rolling while the credits played and didn’t pause it in mid frame or anything like that. I shudder to think what fate awaits Dr. Chilton later when dusk arrives with night right on her heels ... eek!
It is a great ending. Clarice saying, "Dr. Lecter" over and over again as she peers at Jack Crawford from around the corner. A terrified Dr. Chilton constantly looking over his shoulder, as Dr. Lecter, in disguise and at a distance, follows. We already know Dr. Chilton's fate. Also, from the expression on her face, we realize Clarice now has new nightmares that have replaced the screaming of the lambs.
One of the most unforgettable movie endings in cinema history. I remember the day that I saw this in the theater and at the very moment that Lecter said “ I’m having an old friend for dinner” while the camera was focused on Chilton, there were audible gasps from the audience, myself included. I think we all just assumed that he had planned to go after Clarice immediately after his escape, so it was a shock when it was revealed that he actually decided not to out of respect (possibly fondness) and went after Chilton instead...although the man DID seal his fate by antagonizing a serial killer. It was an unexpected twist to an excellent film.
Great film. Best part when she first met him in the cell. He read her for straight filth but she did a pretty good comeback considering she was an amateur. READ and SERVE! LOL!
When I saw it in the theater and they showed Chilton after that iconic line, the reaction was laughter! 🙂 We knew Chilton was going to get his comeuppance.
I understood right away, though. No gasp necessary. I was just hoping Hannibal would prepare human meat properly, for the latter ressembles pork flesh, in butcher/gourmet terms haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! xD
A Masion that’s what Lector admires about her also ... is the fact that she isn’t thrown by his character or menacing humor. He can always count on her to be 100% honest with him, no matter the situation.
at 1:10 coming in from the bottom right corner theres a little boy in a blue shirt, he's speed walking with purpose, theres somewhere important he needs to be lol.
+Michael Dillon ahahahah i'm surprised of how naturally people were acting, considering they were, ya know, making a movie. Really great performances on this film. One person who sadly wasn't duly recognized for his role was Ted Levine. Deserved the oscar for best supporting actor, imo.
This scene was filmed in Bimini Bahamas. Tiny island in the Bahamas just 50 miles from Miami. Filmed in a bar called "End of the World". I have had many drinks in that bar.
Everything about this movie is so well-made. The acting, the writing, the cinematography the subtle clues and details, the symbolism. Truly a work of art. Dr. Lecter himself is so complex, too, that you can't help rooting for him on some level. And despite being a monster, there's something almost compassionate about him that's hard to explain.
This was one of the best films ever, and that was one of the very best final scenes. I remember seeing it for the very first time back in the early 90s and watching him walk off slowly into the crowd as the credits rolled. Class.
There is brilliance in this scene. It's perhaps how evil and move amongst the mundane, a serial killer walks nonchalantly by, slipping his hat on while children play, people go about their business and a man sings, a clergyman greets Dr Chiltren. Chilling and brilliant.
+Ray Hopkins it would be amazing if later there was a scene where Dr. Lecter was enjoying his dinner, a couple of hours later, and then it cuts to Clarice still on the phone saying "Dr. Lecter?"
She told you she was having an old friend for dinner. By 'old friend' she meant a Black guy she met at a bar the night before. By 'dinner' she actually meant anal.
0:41 I've always suspect Jodie Foster to be a replicant ... she's malfunctioning there, her types are not programmed to handle the shame of being hung up on the phone ...
The reason why she kept talking, was because even though he never physically harmed her, their sessions together through his manipulations messed with her subconscious. Similar to what he did to Miggs. Only he's not manipulating her into suicide. Merely just leaving enough of an impact, that ensures she never forgets him. Her behaviour during that scene, looks eerily similar to an MK Ultra getting triggered. There are consequences to be had on those who let Hannibal Lecter inside their head. And she willingly let him in an effort to stop Jame Gumb.
@@Shanethefilmmaker Very true. It shows he now has a hold over her, one she will never escape from (in the sequel, the book that is). THAT is what he likes about her: that he can control her and she will always be under his spell, no matter what.
To me, the way Hannibal puts his hat on after Chilton passes by at 0:56 (accompagnied by rising music), feels like the beginning of the end for Chilton.
The end is pretty chilling. Just the thought of a crazed (yet intelligent) cannibal on the loose while looking very ordinary compared to the people around him. Tells you a lot of who could be walking beside you in public.
Jesus Christ I SO MISS THE 90s!!! Can´t believe this MASTERPIECE came out 1991. Those were the best of times!!! I was 13 years old then, JESUS. HANNIBAL rules forever!
Richie Daniel I was born in the early 90's and yet I just now got around to watching the full movie on a vhs and VHS player I bought from a Thrift store. I was amazed at how entertaining it was wonderful movie and Dr lector was chilling
0:56 The music is so operatic here. Like something you might hear for dracula and it's perfect! Having this ending is so much better too! You don't show how he captures Chilton just that he will and show him getting lost in the crowd. The idea of Lecter on the loose is scary enough.
I absolutely loved this scene. First thing is that how tense and haunting the scene is albeit all those palms and second is that Chilton will sure get what was coming to him.
Rod-Rod-He never really *did* anything, except keep him in prison. But, when they thought Lecter knew who Buffalo Bill was, Chilton kept taunting him and threatening him to answer. Lecter wasn’t intimidated at all-just irritated. Lecter hated Chilton for his complacent, really condescending attitude. He talked in the loudest, most pompous voice, and was particularly sanctimonious toward criminals. That’s why he said he wanted to be in an institution far away from him and that “he does enjoy his petty torments”. Chilton probably pissed everyone off. Maybe now Lecter’s out, he’s trying to get revenge on all the cunts in his life, haha.
Clarice and hannibal become free because while one is “evil” and one is “good” they are empaths…..complete mastery of themselves regardless of circumstance. Dr chilton and Buffalo bill meet their demise because they are narcissists…..they have no control over themselves so they need to control others. This film is a masterclass in personality types, psychology, and social equilibrium
This has got to be one of the most interesting movie endings of all time. What's brilliant about it is that it leaves you room for imagination, not to mention the brooding score by Howard Shore just leaves you with a chill in your spine and perhaps a hint of guilty pleasure because you secretly rooted for Hannibal Lector.
A Really Great and Respectfull Scene (even after 25 Times watching the Movie). One of the Greatest and most underrated Scenes in the History of Cinema. I´ll never forget the Intensity the Scene had the First Time for me (and i know i´m not alone) and still have it today, thanks Howard Shore for the Tremendeous Score too!
The reason Lecter awkwardly holds his hat on his head is because during filming it was so windy this was the only way to keep his hat from blowing away.
The alternate ending was supposed to be him ending the call with clarice and the camera turning to a bound and gagged chilton and lector saying “shall we begin”
what a fucking ending to a movie, he disappears near the end, then pops back up in the final scene just to let clarise know he’s still here, he’s just not coming for her, yet
In this scene you can sense that dr lecter has a love for Jodie. Its like a simple telephone conversation saying . " i am ok my love . Dont you worry about me " this is cinema history. Professor Anthony Hopkins is the bomb !!!
Apparently when this movie came out, Anthony Hopkins went incognito to a screening of it. He was sitting behind two college-age girls in the theater, and once the credits started rolling, he leaned forward and put on his Lecter voice and said something like, "TELL ME, LADIES, DID YOU ENJOY THE FILM?" If I were them I'd need a new pair of pants after that. lol
@@ania519 I get that, but this is a very old comment and honestly I don't remember what I meant back then. I think I probably meant the second meaning that you say is the only meaning in the sentence. I was being ironic.
I'd root for Hannibal. In fact I would have loved it if he had killed Dr Chilton & saw it happen. He said he wanted to be far away from him which means Chilton must have often mocked him to his face with pleasure making Lecter at times feel uncomfortable so it would have been a justice kill.
When Dr Lecter starts walking into the crowd, his feet exactly match the pulse of the music. There's something so creepy about that, both his ease and the menacing promise of what he's going to do wrapped up in one.
Lecter was watching Clarice in the distance during the call and at the same time he cut pieces of orange. When they finished their conversation on the phone, the camera angle revealed Lecter captured Dr. Chilton, restrained and gagged him, with Chilton's bodyguard lying on the floor, dead. Lecter then approaches Chilton with the knife and asks the following question, hence the last line of the movie: "So, Dr. Chilton... Shall we begin?"
The great things about this scene: -Hannibal somehow knew she would be the one to answer the phone. The bastard just predicts correctly every damn thing. -It shows that no matter where she is, he’ll always know how to reach her even if he means her no harm. -She talks to him as the criminal he is, while he talks to her as if it was just another psychiatrist/patient session, just like he talked to her before when he was locked. It emphasizes the illusion that whether he’s locked or free, he’s NEVER powerless. -The first thing he says to her is “Have the lambs stopped screaming?” And the question remains unanswered, leaving the audience to wonder if they truly stopped screaming. -When he starts following his prey (Chilton), he just perfectly blends in with the crowd. It shows that he can pretend to be anyone, and is therefore unfindable. -After Buffalo Bill was arrested, the audience is calmed mentally but like “That’s it?” And then Hannibal calls and makes his intentions clear, it re-tortures us mentally and psychologically because now we wonder what is he gonna do, but it also leaves us satisfied because, let’s be real, we all hated Chilton. -I can’t be the only one who noticed the parallel between this and the opening scene: we first saw Clarice in her training, running fast, getting through obstacles. I think it’s meant to symbolise that she went through the hard and tiresome path to get to her goals. Here, however, Hannibal is just calmly walking with no hurry and nothing getting in his way. That shows that whenever he wants to “eat”, he doesn’t have to go chase his “dinner”; it just unintentionally comes to him. This movie’s psychological horror is TOP-TIER!
While Mads Mikkelsen is the second-best Lecter (in my opinion, of course), no one will ever manage to seduce, enthrall and easily scare the hell out of an audience like Sir Anthony did with this character. Like damn, he's perfect. 🖤
I feel like Mads is better at the physical aspects of Hannibal, how he moves and looks around like a calculating predator, while Anthony is better at capturing the charm and silver tongue of Dr. Lecter.
The original ending was for Lector to finish talking to Clarice he puts and orange slice in his mouth and walks over and looks at Chilton who is tied to a chair .He raises a small pen knife and says "Now Dr Chilton shall we begin " .This was changed for being too macabre
This movie is amazing on so many levels. Nobody but Anthony Hopkins would have sufficed for this role. Standing ovation. Do you ever hear the old saying that he or she “killed it” Well Mr Hopkins Absolutely slaughtered it.
