Back in the day BBC Radio 1 used to be that the top 40 was played in it's entirety. Then they started playing select songs, but every song in the top 10. Now they use it to discriminate and it's shocking. Madonna, Kylie, Janet Jackson, and many others have spoken out against radio in general, but BBC Radio 1 specifically.

I think one of the most telling things about her is her authenticity. Yes, there's costume and make-up and special visual effects etc but when she's interviewed that is exactly how she is in real life. She is genuinely grateful that we enjoy what she does. And not many pop stars can have that said about them. Oh and she's tiny. Barely 5 feet tall -which makes her so cute.😆

Both Madonna and Kylie are being bullied by the music industry, though they don’t need to prove themselves anymore, in the past Madonna sold millions of albums without social media , and so did Kylie . I knew Kylie in the early 2000's with Can't get you out of my head, and in my eyes, she was in her best moment at that time. I was surprised by people considering her an "old popstar" during the 1990's. There is a beautiful thing about it: she's among the women who defied the rules and created a world where an artist can have a longer and more genuine career. Padam padam beaches. 😂

The answer is simple: if you’re good enough and have something special your career will go on forever. Madonna, Cher, Kylie and many others are proof of that. This constant claim old pop stars are deliberately retired is rubbish. It’s always been the thing that new kids prefer to listen to their own age of music. Always been the same. It’s also always been true that the greats will survive that.
@Sthuont
@Sthuont 14 дней назад
People only listen to and can only make value judgements on what they are exposed to though. This is the most important determinant in music industry success. If a song is promoted and advertised and people get as much exposure to a new song across as many platforms and avenues as possible, provided the song is enjoyable (doesn't need to be incredible or groundbreaking, just enjoyable is enough), then I strongly argue a song will succeed. The issue is this seems to be very haphazardly and inconsistently undertaken. Some album campaigns from the lead single on seem to be incredibly lacklustre and inconspicuous in their media prominence and exposure, and it's no wonder they don't succeed, when even fans wouldn't necessarily be aware of a song or albums release. If a release has radio play, radio advertising, tv, tv advertising, magazine covers and print articles, print advertising, online advertising, billboards, social media, reaction videos, recommended videos, critical reviews both in traditional media and online, streaming platform playlists, use in soundtracks, use as background music in retail stores and in media like sports coverage etc., then it surely would be hard not to succeed. Obviously that's going to be expensive and also require a great deal of logistical planning and effort, and naturally unless you're already successful, that strategy would usually be unviable. However, what confuses me is that even artists coming off of hugely successful previous release campaigns so often come out with these almost covert releases that most people won't even be cognisant of. The stars do have to align though as it's a whole confluence of different inputs, from an artists ambition, to their managers competence and skill, to the label's enthusiasm and willingness to support them and the advertising/exposure expenses, plus of course the media's willingness too, of which this video was discussing at least one section of that media; the radio.

While not the biggest Kylie fan (although enjoying a lot of her tracks over the years) I believe the secret to her success is that she has always remained relatable, likeable and amenable. She's equally at home in large scale tours and small scale TV appearances. She always seems to generate a great deal of good will in people She's never gone down the Diva route that a number of (mostly US) artists have gone down.... and it's very telling that she's never once treated herself as a 'legend' unlike many others who have tried and failed to retain a fan base beyond the die hard . And by taking novel approaches to her production and promotion... she manages to take her fans on a 'journey' they may not have anticipated or expected... rather than resort to sticking to one particular shocking gimmick and churning out a basic 'one shot' album (Not to slag off Madonna) At least Kylie has tried novel approaches to Album campaigns now in the post 'single' era... by extending each era with supplemental releases. By doing so.. she' avoided ever being seen as a 'legacy artist' unlike many of her contemporaries (both male and female) and her releases continue to get generally good mainsteam coverage by nature of her personality.... unlike a great many other 'Big Hitters' from the 80's 90's and 00's who were less 'easy' to deal with (i.e. Simply Red... who literally had seemingly zero coverage.... and I was genuinely shocked to find had 2 top 10 albums in the UK in the last 5 years... as I had seen or heard nothing at the time... I'm suprised anyone can still tolerate Mick Hucknall enough to be a 'fan' ) The only times I can genuinely remember Kylie 'struggling' a bit were during the mid/late 90's when she went a bit serious.... and a US produced album that just didn't feel like it was celebrating her uniqueness... just a generic brand of US Executive created nothingness with 'sexy times' plastered ill fittingly over it. But again... not a huge afficiando of hers-so maybe these are really popular moments with everyone (Personally the two songs of hers I listen to a lot on Spotify are 'What Do I Have To Do' and 'Timebomb'... which probably shows how out of touch I am to her body of work in general)

I will never get over the fact that get outta my way was never a bigger hit, that song perfectly encapsulated everything about kylie i loved, a dark almost sinster beat with this pulsating thud in the chorus and kylie just gliding perfectly over the beat, then theres the video which was simple but so fun and kylie looked good in that gold dress. Anyways kylie, madonna, janet, cher, dolly and mariah deserve big props they still doing and laying the ground work for alot of the new girls in pop, rock r&b and country are doing. Kylie, Madonna and Janet are still doing the pop thing and killing it better then alot of the new girls because they have that large legacy behind them. Mariah will always hold that Christmas place her song always charts around that time at number 1 cause she is that girl and cher and dolly defined generations of talent and definitely helped uplift multiple geners into mainstream relevance. Without these woman alot of music would not be what it is today. Kylie i find inspirational because even though shes never made it BIG state side she always flourished outside so well in europe, south america, asia and the austalia and the pacific territory and i think thats what has kept her going is that shes never had to chase american popularity which i feel america has alot more ageism in the industry compared to the rest of the world, shes also kept this almost at home feeling about her like shes just your casual neighbour that has made it huge and is a mega popstar but shes still your neighbour and still humble, shes also had a very public battle with her cancer run which she has spoken very openly about and i think thats brought her to this human level. I just love kylie shes so fun and her music has stood the test of time, i personally dont like padam i think its one of the more generic songs shes released but i will give it, it has rejuvinated her career amongst the younger generation.

I've loved and ADORED Kylie for 30 years now. One thing that sets her appart in my opinion is a strong sense of self, and the love for her craft beyond the charts. She's always done what she wanted, she's always been consistant in the way she presented herself to the world. I remember an itw of hers when CGYOOMH came out, saying people in the industry thought she was done after Impossible Princess, while she herself had no idea because it went completely above her head. She's just doing her thing, hoping for the best of course, but she was never after a number one, or "staying relevant." Se wanted to make great pop and that's all. I think it says a lot that she hasn't had work done to the point she's unrecognisable, or a caricature of herself. She has amazing genes but we've seen many beautiful women butcher their face in hopes to remain youthful-looking. Think about the amount of strength and self-esteem that must be required from a female pop star -- who's always been praised for her exquisite beauty -- to not feel pressured into completely changing her face past a certain age. She's a force of nature on so many levels, and truly an inspiration for women of all ages.

While I know that being commercially popular/successful is great for the artist's bottom line, I don't consider it any indication of their worth - in fact, I would argue that if the masses aren't keen, you're probably doing something right (with notable exceptions of course, like The Beatles, whose talent is unarguable). Kyle produced the very best work of her career during the mid-late 90s and early 2000s. That so many didn't appreciate it at the time - largely due to the industry or critic's poor judgement in not promoting or supporting her - is no reflection on her stellar output. Her most recent work may not be to my personal taste, but as someone who's adored her since the early days I couldn't be more delighted for her current success. Long live La Minogue!

Despite being another radio station aimed particularly at younger audiences, it did get played on there frequently at the time. Ironically, Padam did eventually get playlisted by Radio 1 after backlash on social media but on the C List.

Yeah, Capital FM did end up becoming a very strong supporter of Padam and Kylie, and they deserve praise and credit for that. Radio 1 however deserves defunding...

I've loved Kylie's music since her debut album, and still do to this day. Ageism sucks, whether in the entertainment industry or in society. But it's not just women, no matter how contemporary and popular this narrative is. Bruce Springsteen doesn't get any radio airplay when he releases new stuff. Neither do the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, Rod Stewart, Bon Jovi, Bryan Adams and countless other "veteran male singers", in spite of the fact that their albums regularly enter the top 5 of the charts, and even though they still continuously sell out venues across the world. It's not always about gender oppression, you know ?
@Sthuont
@Sthuont 14 дней назад
Yeah that is a valid point, however I think there is a difference in the timing of the ageist discrimination for males vs. females. For males it seems to happen once they're in their later years, for females though it happens once they hit middle age, even once they reach 30 honestly, which I don't think most would consider middle age just yet. I agree though, it's definitely happening to males as well.

It might have been the case that fresh new young stars had an advantage over older musicians back in the 80s or 90s but that's absolutely not the case anymore. Look at the line up for Glastonbury, it's like a museum of elderly singers. It's been extremely hard to break into the mainstream music industry for the past 15 years. Kylie was simply born at the right time and marketed as a gay icon.

I would say post Aphrodite 2010s Kylie was an overlooked success. Kiss Me Once charted #2 and #1 in the UK and Australia, while Abbey Road Sessions and Kylie Christmas also sold a lot of records.

Kylie Minogue has been making *PERFECT* pop music since decades! All her albums are full of earworms and fierce tracks! In a perfect world, Kylie would be still topping the charts cuz her music is that good! and she is a beautiful person, in and out! However, she has unbreakable walls that are stopping her music from getting the recognition it deserves! The US have always had a prejudice against her, they never let her music breakthrough (Fever aside, that was a miracle, but it was also during an era where a lot of non us music was big there, like t.A.T.u were a sensation in the us as well). Body Language and X were exactly what the US craved back then, and X (just like BLACKOUT) were between the first albums to ever bring that kind of electro pop to the table!! Lots of people don't listen to Kylie because they have a prejudice against her (created by the media, framing her as a non deserving, series b popstar), they just hate her when the only song they know of hers is CGYOOMH lmao! Unbelieavable reality we live in. Madonna has also suffered the same destiny due to her age! People don't even know any album track from her album post Confession, neither how her tours looked like, but they still have the guts to say that she is not good anymore!! She delivered bops after bops till Rebel Heart. And, when the audience asked for her to be experimental again, she gave them Madame X, which was hated for being too weird (but that's what they wanted, she just did what she has always done. She merged popular music of the time [trap pop] with what she admired at that time [portugal culture and traditional music]) Moreover, they also make fun of her for not being able to dance like she used to. Guys, not even Janet Jackson at 58 can dance like she used to. Madonna wasn't half the dance Janet was, and she is still delivering at 66!! These people complaining are in their 20ies and can't do what Madonna is doing now without getting back ache LOL Sorry for the essay guys, but i can't really understand people anymore. The popstars have never fell off, it's the audience that it's making it difficult for them.

The music industry isn't "age-ist". I can think of several reasons why older artists get pushed out… *1. Demographic* Firstly, the industry's biggest consumers tend to be a young demographic who are more interested in stars their own age. Many sectors of the music industry deliberately target children because they see that as a lucrative market. *2. Novelty* Then there's novelty - audiences are always looking for "the next big, exciting thing". They want the coolest new acts, not something that's been around for decades and "your parents like". It's not biased against women. How many MALE singers from the 80s are Radio 1 still promoting? To give one example, Shakin' Stevens released an album last year and I'd be surprised if Radio 1 promoted it. *3. Trends* It's also about what's fashionable - young new artists tend to represent (and define) the latest musical trends. Styles of singing, rapping, dancing, producing, and clothing fashion. It's obvious that young people are the ones to lead with these trends. Being perfectly in step with current-year fashions simply doesn't come as natural to older singers. *4. Hotness* And finally, there's hotness. And this matters. Female pop stars are obviously going to have a big advantage if they're young and pretty. This doesn't mean it's ALL about looks, or that older women aren't pretty (I love older women). But it would be ridiculous to think that having youthful looks (and being a more "virginal" age) don't play a part in popularity. Teenagers simply aren't going to find a woman of Kylie's age physically appealing. There's also the fact that a lot of pop stars "live fast" and don't age well. Plus, by a certain age, many pop stars are married with families, making the idea of them being "idols" far less appropriate. In my opinion, I truly think that longevity in the industry isn't really about talent, it's really all about luck. There are thousands and thousands of hugely talented artists who COULD have gone on to have decades-long careers, but didn't, simply because luck just didn't go their way. They didn't "catch on". Kylie is one of the lucky few. It could so easily have gone the other way for her, but she just happened to get good promotion (and 1 great track by Cathy Dennis and Rob Davis) just at the right time. That can be all it takes - good promotion and 1 great track. Though Kylie has also been hugely carried by her Neighbours and SAW legacy. Everyone in the UK watched her "marriage" in the 80s so she feels like family. This made her a household name, and put her at a huge advantage. Just for the record, I'm a huge SAW fan and was a big Kylie fan for many years, buying all her albums. BTDYK is still one of my top two favourite songs. Over the years, I gradually lost interest in her career, for various reasons which I won't go into. I absolutely hated "Padam" and for me that was the end of my interest in her career. Though on a personal level I wish her all the best of course.

How does a radio like BBC one even decide what is the material their audiences like? Surely you'd have to play them some Kylie so they can let you know, at least by tuning in or not that they don't like, or "heavens forbidd" - that they do 😏😏. Even if your targeted audience is ppl bellow 20 (which considering the ages of vast majority of ppl who work at such places is deeply problematic in or of itself, on several layers) they still might like the music - if you like the music you don't have to like the person behind it, letalone consider their age, looks or popularity. The sad and appaling truth is that entities like Billboard and large radios have been trying for more than a decade now to manipulate the general public into considering some of the music successful and fresh and good, and all the rest a complite opposite. They've tried to do this by limiting exposure to music that what they biasedly chose to.
