To be fair, in another video Dr. Fung mentioned that a ketogenic diet results in 71% the benefit of fasting, so adding intermittent fasting in whatever form is an added benefit. He described keto and fasting as "cousins."

This needs to be put in the CLINICAL context of how Dr Fung developed his method. His clinic went with IF rather than relying keto because of the catchment population. Dealing with many immigrants and low income patients, the patients found the prospect of fasting more acceptable than not eating their culturally appropriate foods. For those who were happy to eat low carb when they did eat, they got better results. Those who practiced THERAPEUTIC fasting but didnt change what they ate, still got acceptable results.

Megan Ramos did a podcast about which is better: fasting or diet. And, exactly for the reasons you mention, including also not having access to low carb foods due to being in a care facility of some sort, they started with fasting and had wonderful results. She believes, wholeheartedly, that for an insulin resistant population, fasting is the first and most powerful thing to try. BUT she also said that diet is important, and if you want to heal as much as possible, combining the two is ideal.

@@darkfieldcarnivore3928 Erm ... no! If you fast for a long time, like the person doing a full year without food, you need to take supplements. The usual fasts nowadays ranging from 16 hours to a few days do not cause any deficiencies. And what toxins do you expect from no intake of food or calorific liquids? Our bodies do not usually produce toxic metabolites they cannot deal with, as long as adaquate fluid intake is maintained. Even with long fasts of weeks and months, an accumulation of toxic metabolic products is not an issue. There is not a single study that shows any "toxicities" from fasting. Feel free to link one if you know one.

Jason Fung was the Doctor who started me out on my health journey 2 1/2 years ago. Great at explaining stuff and really practical. He also promotes low carb / keto on other videos. I understand that insulin in the blood helps glucose into cells, converts excess glucose into glycogen and prevents fat burning. Therefore when you don’t have insulin in your blood ie fasting, means you must burning fats. When you are on keto every time you eat you will still raise some insulin….. I’m still intermittent fasting and on keto / carnivore. Great way to go!👍👍👍

After doing the ketogenic diet and intermitten fasting for 2 years, I would say the combination of food is the foremost concern, and then the timing and the duration of fasting would come naturally. The high fat with adequate protein would determine when I will have the next meal. Carbs just make me feel hungry earlier, which mean my duration of my fasting shorter.

So I discovered intermittent fasting and the carnivore diet at the same time and started them almost immediately. I am seeing immediate results and am finding IF surprisingly easy. Within 2 weeks I have done 15 or more hours every day and sailed through a 40 hour fast as well. Now I'm planning on trying to do a 2 day fast every weekend.

I've watched a lot of Diary of a CEO videos. He's been very interested in low carb eating lately, but he also entertains vegan influencers. No doubt in my mind, Fung was either cautioned against spending too much time on what you eat and focus only the fasting element, or that was edited out. Before I started low carb eating I watched a lot of Fung's videos and was doing IF while still eating plants and sugar and it was helpful. So, this little seed is very good. Recently, my hopelessly sugar addicted t2d relative decided he was going to do intermittent fasting. I have no idea if he still is doing that or not, but something put that seed in his mind. He even recently said to me that my diet was working better than his (he follows standard of care from a vegetarian doctor). So I'm just not offering any more information and will let him follow the path and pray it gets him to the low carb lifestyle.

Does the “answer” then not lie in a moderate and sustainable combination or low carb and intermittent fasting? Fasting may be “natural” if indeed you don’t wake up hungry … and not being hungry is the result of low carb diets … a natural state through which we evolved. Break the “habit” of eating and replace it with “necessity” of eating.

I’m a little confused about Dr Fung saying protein mixed with fat is problematic? Why? It’s completely natural and whole. He seems to be saying eat chicken because it’s low in fat. Is that for weight loss or is that for health? Is he saying animal fat is bad for you? And is he a proponent of fiber (whole grain what) ? Because I know we don’t need fiber if we don’t want it in the context of a low carb diet. Surely if you are not low carb the fiber could have a benefit but if you are in ketosis I don’t think fiber is necessary not a nanogram. And I still don’t understand why he holds the 70s up as the ideal decade. That is the decade I did some of the most damage to myself; Twinkie’s, grape soda by the 12 pack, chocolate bars and Rice Crispys for breakfast with a mound of sugar poured on top. Had to be disastrous for my 10 year old brain. I know I only survived because I was a high level Athlete. Paying for it now tho. Note: I was suicidal at 11 even went to therapy. Look up Dr Georgia Ede if you want to know the truth, include Dr Chris Palmer while your at it

I feel like you were inferring that Dr. Fung was promoting fasting as the only way to lose weight. He clearly stated that fasting is a tool. I have listened to him for years and he has never claimed that fasting is the only way to lose fat. You are both in the arena fighting the same fight and I think it is disingenuous to try to somehow armchair quarterback someone else's interview and present yourself somehow as superior. I respect your thoughts and the work you have done in helping people and contributing to ethical nutritional information, but I think segments like these would be more credible with a one on one interview. To fast before or after surgery and before a blood test is totally different than fasting for several days consistently. You would think that a physician could see the difference. While someone who is extremely overweight can fast for two or three days safely, it may be very dangerous for someone who is only slightly overweight. I doubt that most people who go through multiple famines would advocate that for others.

Depending upon how insulin resistant you are, whether you ate carbs before you started fasting, how often you fast, it can take 72 hours to get into ketosis, where the body is burning mostly fat for fuel. Keep it up. Megan Ramos, Dr. Fung’s business partner, calls 3 36-42 hour fasts per week the gold standard for lowering insulin and losing fat. She did this for about 6 months and got rid of her pre-diabetes, fatty liver, and PCOS.

I contracted norovirus last spring and I did not eat for five days. I did drink a lot of water. I was not overweight before I contracted the virus, but I also did not lose any weight after not eating for five days. I almost blacked out brushing my teeth the third, forth, and fifth day. I do not think that long-term fasting is necessary or good for some people. It may be that fasting for at least 12 hours per day up to possibly 14 or a few more hours may be healthy for those who are not overweight, to give the diagestive system some down time, but more than that may be detrimental to people with a healthy weight. For people who are very overweight, fasting for over 16 hours and even over one or two days may work and help them lose weight. But those are two very different populations.

Doc, you can learn a lot from Dr. Fung. Fasting is keto and low carb. However, your weird diet that you call “keto” is just a low carb diet that is certainly NOT keto for all people. You need to stop your misinformation regarding your fake keto diet. Just call your diet by its proper name - your diet is just a low carb diet. You stated that nutritional ketosis is not the goal of a “keto” diet - this is not scientific and just plain dumb. A keto diet is only a keto diet if it induces ketosis for the particular person on the diet. If a person is on your weird diet and they don’t enter nutritional ketosis, then the diet is not a keto diet for that person. Please stop trying to make money from the word “keto” when you don’t even recommend measuring ketones.

I've followed Dr Fung's program for a time, and I have to point out : He doesn't just recommend fasting. His program is fasting combined with eating a low-carb to keto diet. They are actually a powerful combination because it's much easier to fast when you are already fat-adapted thanks to eating keto. And conversely, doing like a 36h fast can help you get fat-adapted more quickly ( but that can really suck though). Today, I just use it as a practical solution : having fasted in the past over 36h in the past, I know that I can go that long without food without any problems. So that if I'm on the road, at a conference or some other situation where I can't at least eat keto, I don't have to worry. In that sense, it's a powerful and simple tool to have at your disposal

Dr Fung doesn't want people to reject fasting if they are vegan, etc. If you listen to his Fasting Method, they advocate low carb. If you eat keto all day long, it does not work for many of us. Fasting long enough does actually work but the best is both together. On a 36 hour fast now.

Interesting to listen to 2 doctors I admire having different positions on fasting. I have fasted twice. The first time was for 28 hours in which I experienced near euphoric spiritual feelings and mentally sharp. I wasn't hungry and felt I could have continued for longer. The second time was different. It was for 42 hours and I felt like crap at the end. On breaking the fast with a light refreshment I felt completely normal within a few minutes.

For older women, vast majority Needs fasting Pointblank It’s sucky in our culture but it’s reality Also -it takes a looooong time of severe carb restriction (w/high fat) and IF/EF before seeing things even start to shift It’s rare for the person to tolerate this in our culture. It’s HARD and for no gain (fat loss). So they give up. I’m talking 6 mos till fat loss rly starts kicking in - like the 25yo did in week 3 lol Support network is absolutely KEY or ur going to lose in the fat loss game

Dr Elizabeth Bright says the exact opposite! Older women who fast spike Cortisol, which puts on belly fat. We (I’m 73) can lose fat by eating mostly fats and protein, minimal carbs, and by working out with weights sufficiently to build some muscle (which burns fat while you sleep). This is absolutely sustainable once you take your own health seriously and realize how terrible the alternatives can be. And any woman who can’t make up her mind to eat healthily and needs a ton of “support” is weak-willed. In the words of Neicey Nash, “Take a big girl pill!”

@@margomoore4527 Not everyone is the same and some people have more discipline and drive than others. Carb addiction is real, but I think that much more of carb addiction is psychological. I know a lot of overweight women who are not happy. The people that they loved have died or moved on with their own children and do not have much time to spend with their mothers. For women who never had careers and who centered their lives around their children, empty nest syndrome and losing their husband and many of their friends leaves them with little but food and TV. Take away the comfort foods and what do these people have left? Quite a lot if they are willing to change their lives and develop other interests, but that is difficult if you do not have the habit of doing so for the last thirty or forty years.

He's using autophagy which does work in a "self-cleaning way". I used it to help during my adaptation to a keto diet. Worked very nicely. Autophagy removes damaged cells and you can simply do this overnight while you sleep, and you rely upon ketone bodies made from your body fat. Since I was not taking meds, nor a diabetic, it was perfectly safe. All that is needed is no snacking ever and skipping breakfast - doing OMAD. And this pattern fits into today's commuting lifestyle. You have your black coffee on your way out the door in the morning, no snacking at work, and then you have a nice ketogenic lunch. This is how one adapts more easily to keto, trains yourself to not snacking and since you're on the job you don't have to endure people nagging you to eat a "balanced diet". Eat only what is "essential for life" which are meat and fat. No carbs, all of them. KETO 18/6 +A is my method.

I lost 30 lbs using Dr Fung's plan coupled with carbs under 50 g/day. When I dropped carbs lower, and switched to Ketovore/Carnivore last August, I felt physically better, but have gained 5 lbs and have not lost inches. Fasting, which used to be easy for me, no longer works because I get really hungry...for my animal based foods. I believe, for me, Dr Fung's approach was much more effective. 24 or 36 hour fasts, 3 times a week

Ok, have you considered Dr. Fung’s patient population? It may be that it is difficult for Dr. Fung to get his patients to quit rice. Dr. Westman, you always say you have to deal with patients as they come to you. Therefore, the fasting Dr. Fung suggests is a good way to overcome this issue.

My understanding is that Dr. Fung initially wanted to convince his patients to eat a low carb diet, but he evidently ran into some resistance from his patients, so he settled on fasting instead because that also keeps insulin from spiking. I was inspired to try fasting and my 24-hour fasts were ok, but he said that people didn't end up gaining weight back afterward and I ALWAYS did. The worst was when I fasted for 3 full days and gained the weight back IN A DAY!!! So discouraging. Dr. Fung's plan is also to eat 2 meals per day every other day, and fast completely the days in between. He says that you won't lose muscle because your body isn't "stupid," but I've since researched the importance of protein, and now I refuse to fast because I don't want to lose muscle as I age. Honestly, eating keto is a hell of a lot easier than eating NOTHING!

Then just don’t snack between meals, and fast overnight, from after an earlier supper, to a later brunch. Eat the right amount of protein grams for your height, build, gender. Avoid processed seed oils; healthy fats instead. There are no Essential carbohydrates. Walk comfortably after meals to improve Insulin sensitivity. Get the best recuperative sleep you can get. Reduces stressors in your life. Don’t get cellularly dehydrated. Test full thyroid panel. Test Vitamin D panel. Test Iron/B12 panel. Some meds are known to affect metabolism.

I agree. I exercise in the morning and the thought of getting up and exercising for 1.5 hours without eating a cup of yogurt and walnuts means that I would not get up at all. I prefer to eat my last meal when the workday is done, not in the middle of the day, so I rarely can go more than 13 hours per day fasting. That is good enough for me. I also still eat some carbs and I admit to even eating ice cream and some cookies. However, I do not make a habit of it and I do not need to lose weight. I would like to put on more muscle, but according to a recent CAT scan, I do not have viseral fat. I may still have some fat in my liver and pancreas, and some day I may ask for a scan to determine how much fat is in my liver and pancreas, but according to what Dr. Robert Lustig has said about blood work, it is unlikely that I have non-alcoholic liver disease.

Maybe add electrolytes to your water to improve hydration at a cellular level. Monitor blood sugars if you fast. Start by fasting overnight, like 12 hours at first. Get quality sleep. A reason you may feel poorly could be your cortisol levels are off, or you aren’t properly hydrated, sleep isn’t restorative, menopause?, hormones aren’t optimal… You could more gradually adapt, as fasting too soon and too long before adapting without adjusting the diet, with likely affect how your body responds. Later you can delay breakfast by 1 hour, or have supper an hour earlier.

I can't fast long-term but I do "accidental" IF on carnivore - dinner earlier, not hungry until 11, 12, 1 or so. And there's 18 hours of resting my digestive system. Keto veg gave me gout and I can't cope with nightshades or oxalates (arthritis). So for my N=1 no veg +short IF has saved my life. Certainly my sanity. Gout is not fun. And it wasn't the meat or red wine doing it. It was the "healthy veg". Now 3.5 years relief by just going zero carb (no veg).

If you watch other interviews or presentations by Dr. Fung, you will know that he supports good healthy food with no snacking between meals. It just makes sense to allow your body to deal with whatever food you have ingested, before you eat again. Giving yourself time to rest, and your cells to do some "housecleaning" (or autophagy if you are geekish) . If you are eating every 3 hours, your body never gets the chance to do this. As a doctor intimately involved with type two diabetic issues, he is naturally in favour of cutting out the sugars.
