As someone who just started collecting vinyl, I thank you for showing this to us, I really didn’t know about this at all. Glad to see you back, hoping for more in the near future!
Put me in the category of 50+ y.o. vinyl "collector" who's been buying Lp's for a long, long time, now. Never saw this. No record store I haunted in town back in the 80s ever did this. Some of you say "record stores did this all the time", and I'm like, where? LOL. Nice tip! I suppose you just have to know when to stop so you don't smush up the opening edges? Whatever happened to those LP openers that looked like mini-records that you would run along the opening edge and voila! It's open...?
Awesome! I've loved your videos since I first got into records, and for sure you were the one who taught me about so many cool pressings and ways to present music in a physical format, i love sharing your videos and rewatching them. anytime i get the chance i post your links in any vinyl community im in, thank you! I will certainly come back for more of your videos! (Also 6.66k Subscribers! pretty gnarly number if you ask me)
Until you’re handing the record to the shop owner, who’s using this technique to open the sleeve when you want to spin and listen to the record in the shop before possibly buying it and the guy happens to bend a corner very badly. True story.
I use an exacto knife with 1/16th inch of blade exposed to slit the shrink. I am his age and have a collection of similar size. I have been flipping through records bins exactly 50 years. I would NEVER do this to ANY lp even a G+ at $1 at the thrift store. I minimize wear at all times and this is not that. Not recommended ever.
Welcome back, man! Missed your videos a lot! Vinyl has been selling like crazy since you took your break, and I'm sure if you wanted to do another video with unique vinyl and CD packaging, there would be tons of new material to work with! This is a cool trick too, but I dont think Ill be using it, lol
