It's a shame how much they squandered the Flanders heel run, could have been a good draw if they booked him right. Instead they kill the angle by having Maud job and turn him face again
According to Bret's autography he demanded to be portrayed as himself. The producers said no before there were fans of Bret Hart waiting on him outside. They didn't know how popular Bret Hart was at the time.
Did he really demand it? I read that he actually accepted doing the voice of a made up wrestler which is why he really didn't sound like himself. Then they changed the character to Bret Hart after seeing all the fans asking for his autograph. I think even some employees asked for his autograph.
Funny but this Bret was a heel & the early 90's when this was filmed Bret was a face (respectable role model) before the heel turn in 97. The Simpsons predicted everything😅
I looked it up & it was Bret Hart but the writers originally wanted him to play another wrestler called the the Mad Russian but he wanted to play as himself. Also the direction could be to blame as well because theyd tell him things like, “We need you to be mad” or “okay not that mad”
@@skyrimwarrior he was suppose to be a different voice, because it was suppose to be a different wrestler. They changed it back to Bret in animation after he was done.
If I ever meet Bret Hart at a con, I’m going to buy his Simpsons figure and ask him to sign his name along with a message saying, “Eww, this toy’s got old man stink!”
The Shrieking Shiek is a reference to Ed 'Sheik' Farhat (or The Original Sheik to differentiate himself from The Iron Sheik) To portray his gimmick he'd should shout nonsense that is a major city in Michigan - Kalamazoo. Western Michigan University with the Broncos reside there. I believe this was his hometown. This was during more different times. Ed was the proprietor/chairman/whatever position of Big Time Wrestling in Detroit, MI at the Cobo/TCF Center that lasted for 20 years. He is the uncle of Sabu.
Because it reminded him of "happier times" when he was the most powerful and richest man in Springfield, all briefly though. He may as well had left it because he will get restored to his old position within 15 minutes thanks to plot armour and cartoon writing protection.
I thought it was because Bret gave him a dose of reality. Bret didn't want it and he called him a pencil neck geek. Burns realised he was right and didn't want the picture either.
Funny how he shows up with his wrestling gear & persona 😅 imagine the undertaker with his wrestling gear & persona shows up to talk to the relator: "This place smells like death & there is a coffin in the basement...its perfect"
So originally they didnt know how big a celebrity Bret Hart was and wanted him to play a wrestler called the Mad Viking. But when tons of Bret Hart fans at the Fox Studlo asked him for autographs they realized his popularity and decided to draw him in as himself. At around season 9, the show creators began to get a big ego and a lot of the best writers left the show like Conan and Odenkirk. Matt Groening grew full of himself and ruined the show.
They really should have built a whole episode around Bret. Instead of a 20 second cameo that sounded nothing like him. Could have easily had him in some “storyline” with Homer or Bart.
@@In-N-Out333 Matt Groening was hardly involved by that point, he pretty much left to do Futurama after season 9. He had never even seen big Jump The Shark episode 'Saddlesore Galactica' until they recorded the commentary for it.
I still don’t get why the Simpsons didn’t invite any more wrestlers on their show, how could Bret hart be the only one to appear in it entirely so far?
I've been watching 90's wrestling forever and I still don't think that actually sounds like Bret >.> why'd they even bother bringing him in for 2 lines?
It was Bret doing the voice. But Bret thought he was doing a viking type wrestler. But then the Simpsons saw how popular Bret was and drew the Hitman in as himself
"This place has got old man stink" For the record, this episode aired just a few months before the Montreal Screwjob... Another low-key Simpsons prediction?
Smithers: “I’ll make sure he forwards your social security checks, sir!” Bret THH: “Eeew! These social security checks have got OLD MAN STINK!” **forwards them**
That Mr. Burns... y'know... what's he ever done? What money did he actually draw? He's... Y'know... a 2 out of 10, 3 out of 10 at best. He's the shits.
doesnt sound like bret at all though even though he did the voice over: long story short: they told him they didn't want to put bret in the cartoon original, instead wanted some obscure viking wrestle until they realised how famouse bret was, then they drew him in, but i guess the voice stayedthe same
