It's a known phenominon amongst negotiators and detectives. It's called "the double whammy". It could be one big thing and one little thing, but you go over the edge. It's not a guarantee, but if that person is going to do it then they're going to.
Well, to be fair they're not minor. For example, no ambulance, firefighter, or police can be called or be mobile until an alternative for zinc can be found.
You thought you were going to write a comment, weren't you, Jimmy? Well think again! The printed circuit board inside your computer was made of, you guessed it, zinc!
Wellp, Jimmy, you're goin to be in the mens rooms for a loooong time kiddo, cause, guess what? You've got yourself a zinc deficiency! So no more soft stools for you, young man.
There are so many gold jokes throughout this, but for some reason I liked the "Mrs. Crabapple, I haven't seen you since we doubled our prices. Still teaching?" I think it's how cheerfully Apu mentions doubling the entire store's prices, and how the show just lets the joke sneak by without feeling the need to draw a ton of extra attention to it.
It's a very deep joke. Why did the prices double? Where has she been shopping prior to this scene? Why is she shopping there today?!?! It's an absolute rabbit-hole of socioeconomic commentary and the politics of enforced hopelessness.
I always loved 1950s white lab coat industrials that spoke about the most mundane topics earnestly and full of hope. And when the Simpsons lampooned them with this I laughed until I cried. The idea of one of those films done in an “It’s a wonderful life” format, only instead of wishing he wasn’t born, George Bailey wishes Zinc never existed. I really wondered how his guardian angel, Clarence, would have reacted... or if he’d have gotten his wings
When porn was illegal once upon a time there were films called "White Coaters" where a guy dressed in a white lab coat would bookend porn with "education" and end the film with something like "and now you know what to do on your honeymoon"
This bit always kinda struck me as a riff on 1940's A Case of Spring Fever ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4ttYlcrA7ys.html ) in particular. Someone on the writing team must've been a MST3k fan!
If my teacher in primary school had offered me to stay and talk about anything, I would have taken up the offer ... question is only if she would have been happy about my choice of topics 🤷♂
What a rollercoaster this video sets you on, from the giddy heights of learning how important a world with zinc is, to the lowly lows of Edna's crippling loneliness.
I dont. I laugh. She probably rejected guys that would've been there for her and she thought she was too good for them until she got dumped repeatedly by the guys she wanted. Now she's alone, as she should be.
Out of all the dream sequences Ive seen, this is the most relatable. For me, its never mundane but never total nonsense. Always something like wishing zinc never existed, for some reason.
The joke is that all those things would still exist without zinc, a rotary mechanism in a phone can be made with any metal. Anodes and cathodes dont need zinc as the catalyst. And as you said, a firing pin can be any relatively hard metal.
More to the point... it had a hammer. It didn't need a firing pin. All three examples given can be made without zinc, and even when zinc is used it's typically in an alloy. Meaning that reproducing the design without zinc should still work (lower quality, but still)
God.. I grew up watching this show, and not until now at age 30 do I see how realistic the characters really are. Ms Krebapel is exactly like an overworked public school teacher.
"Wait, the protagonist of Life Without Zinc is called Jimmy? I've been calling him Billy! All this time I've been making an idiot out of myself!"- you at some point presumably
Wasn't an intentional joke, they just didn't know metallurgy. You don't use soft metals like zinc for any striking object. It bends and deforms far too easily. There are pot-metal (zinc alloy) saturday night special pistols, but even those have a steel firing pin and spring.
Mostly old firearms from what I understand that have some traces of zinc. Though nowadays and for awhile now, most did away with zinc it's all in 7075 aluminum or 4140 to 4150 and 416R steel these days.
" Still teaching?" "Let's see." *Scratches off ticket that looks like a winner but ends up being a loser* "One more day at least." Yeah, that hits hard
My Lifetime NRA Membership-having father in law did. No gun safes or trigger locks for him. I asked why, and he said the brown people aren't going to wait for you to enter the combination to your safe if they break into your home. Classy guy. He's gone now.
@@texaswunderkind Though he said it in a less-than-PC way, the message isn't wrong. A home invader, whatever color they may be, isn't going to wait politely for you to open your safe or undo your trigger lock.
@texaswunderkind1493 "Accidentally" shot himself? A lot of gun-related fatalities in the home in America, and unfortunately not very many of them involved break-ins. There's a careful line of "readiness" that's a razor's edge between "defenseless" and "fatally negligent." Some kid gets into it (they get curious) or some family member has a hair-trigger temper without a safety. Options there are: 1. find that zone between "secure" and "available." 2. Make sure your family is well-adjusted and well-trained in trigger discipline. 3. Live alone, or kill your family before one of them snaps and kills you. (Statistically speaking, of course).
@Mightylcanis I can understand that if he didn't have children but far too many children have gotten a hold of their parent's guns and hurt themselves or someone else with them.
No car battery and yet the starter motor is clearly heard cranking the engine? Are we supposed to believe this is some kind of 😆 magical starter motor? I sure hope someone was fired for that mistake.
Well, there was also a dial tone on the phone that couldn't function, and firing pins have never been made of zinc..so there's that. Just repeat to yourself "It's just a show, I should really just relax." And be thankful you don't have to live in a world without springs!
one of the best parts is I'm pretty sure that the gun could have easily just had its zinc replaced by another material. same for the phone most likely.
The funny thing is that firing pins have been made out of stuff That wasn't zinc for quite a while. It was in fact rare to have the maid of any sort of zinc alloy until relatively recently.
I'll bet this was inspired by a segment in 1977s "Kentucky Fried Movie" called "Zinc Oxide and you" in which a housewife asks "But how do I use Zinc Oxide?" Then everything in her world proceeds to disappear and fall apart. Hilarious and can be found easily on RU-vid.
But don't forget that the most important kind of zinc, is ZINC OXIDE! Without it, there'd be no brake controls, sand, pacemakers, prosthetic limbs, or safety catches for anyones sons rifles. -This has been a Samuel L Bronkowitz production
I'm the dumb ass nerd that probably would stay behind for a moment just to ask a few things about Zinc. Its one of those metals that seems to have few noticable big uses but without it you'd die and a lot of galvanized stuff would rust away (as zinc galvanized stuff is the biggest used of it)
Same honestly. I just really like understanding my f*cking surroundings, guess that makes me a freak. And people wonder why they have no control in their lives.
Also Zinc deficiency in human body can lead to: 1. Alopecia 2. Pustular skin rash (perioral region & extremities) 3. Hypogonadism 4. Impaired wound healing 5. Impaired taste 6. Immune dysfunction
@@seanwebb605 being lonlely doesn't mean being stressed out among crowds. It means not having anyone to go to, or to talk to, about your problems, feelings, etc. It is quite something awful.
The whole concept of a children’s educational film (and an old, black and white one at that) that ends with the main character nearly shooting himself in the head because of a huge mistake he made is just one of the many things that made old school Simpsons a sitcom that was in a league of its own.
I'm thinking about the writers' meetings where they debated the different elements that wouldn't exist, and how it is they came to zinc. It couldn't be too common or too obscure or it isn't funny. Evidently zinc is right in the sweet spot.
Was a long time since I saw this. I didn't remember the loneliness of Edna like this. "We can talk about anything. I'll do your homework for ya." while holding her hands.. I didn't use to know feeling very lonely is a reality in many people's lives. Aww 😔
i feel like someone in the writer's room got stuck talking to someone in the zinc industry at a party one time and was determined to turn that experience into something useful
