Are you seriously complaining that there aren't any boss fights with "epic monsters and Elder Gods"? In a Lovecraftian game?

If it’s based off the Cthulhu mythos then there shouldn’t be boss fights my guy.

1-You aren't supposed to "overcome" old gods, that's the entire idea of lovecraftian horror, you should only be glad you survived the encounter with you mind intact, so not including bosses actually is a very sensible choice, Cthulhu or Dagon aren't supposed to be a Final Fantasy 14 style 100,000,000 HP boss you can grind to level up and defeat. 2-The mind palace is indeed one of the best mechanics in this studio's previous games, it was in Sherlock Holmes Crimes & Punishment and it was a very enjoyable mechanic to solve mysteries and crimes (specially that the each case could have different outcomes).

Does he know how to play detective games? Guessing? Boss fight? Wtf

I had absolutely no trouble with solving and piecing together the clues. Was all logical and not ridiculously easy, so a great medium. So glad there wasn’t a boss. Loved the freedom and lack of handholding as well, added to the feel of being an actual private eye.

Whoever wrote this needs to read up on cosmic horror a bit. Of course there are no boss fights against elder gods, their whole point is being so large and unknowable that you cant hope to defeat them, or even have them notice you. Clunky controls is a valid critique, but like resident evil 4 (which was mentioned) this is most certainly an intentional choice to make the player feel disempowered and disoriented. Not every combat system has to be a power fantasy.

"I don't like puzzles and im MAD there's no boss fights :(" Maybe this just isn't the type of game you like.

Pre-ordered, so can play early - this reviews kinda unfair. The combat's clunky, but the detective work, atmosphere, tone, and plot really does more than make up for it. Kinda feels like the reviewer went in looking for problems, a little.

Am I the only one that liked Call of Cthulu and will probably like this too? People need to chill tf out.

Tthe most frustrating thing on this game is that it leads you to think it has a survival mechanics like the RE games (saving ammo and medkits), but you can actually farm for parts and xp going back and forth the same places. It starts quite hard but soon enough you've seen all monsters and challanges. Other than that, the storyline is amazing, ambience is very well done

3:05 Overcoming? You’re not meant to overcome anything! Howard Phillips Lovecraft’s entire ideology and all of his work was based around the fact that humans are helpless and inconsequential. You cannot overcome something, in fact in nearly every story the protagonist cannot even begin to comprehend what they experience and spirals into madness before even seeing the monster.

Is there some rule written somewhere that all Cthulhu games must be clunky, janky, and dull? Apparently there is.

3:02 the elder gods of the Cthulhu universe are all powerful and immortal. Just looking at them shatters the human mind! The whole point is that there’s nothing we can do to stop them when the awaken.

3:10 well to be fair the whole point for Lovecraft's stories is that you cant fight back against cosmic horrors and for most fans of the setting a boss fight vs even the lesser evils would have been a big no, cthulhu while the most famous is still only a low level horror, he is a priest for the things bigger than him.

Bought this for 15 bucks because it looked similar to Vampyr in terms of mechanics etc.

I like the archives guessing part because that's what I detective does it makes you think. It's like I no hold your hand experience like the vanishing of Ethan Carter. I've played a lot of detective games I would easily give us a 9

There are truths to this reviewers remarks, but you can also tell that this isn't the typical game he prefers to play. I'll agree that combat is very outdated and clunky (along the lines of silent hill 2, except that even James could side step...) adding in the characters backstory as a Sailor it kind of drags the quality down. The sleuthing is phenomenal and if your stuck that means you definitely missed a clue, and can require you go back to certain areas to scour. It can get tedious but it adds some reality to the whole PI gimmick. As for what this game knocks out of the park... The story, settings, and characters are fantastic. There is so much Lovecraft and other takes involved, Easter eggs abound and if your a fan of the Mythos and Strange Tales fiction this game will delight the hell out of you. I'm very cautious about buying games outright, but I'm glad I took the 'dive' with this one! At the same I hope if this studio continues they'll tweak, mold, and work on the shortcomings from this title.

I can't stand the writing with ALL IGN reviews. They all sound like they were written by the game person regardless of the reviewer. The opening paragraph in particular. I want to read/watch a review from a person who sounds like how a normal person talks.

Fighting monsters, not running away. Not survival horror but action with a horror theme.

To all those people making jokes about the visual quality of the game... the graphics are fine, seriously.

I know I've heard the same exact voice that fish man has in Fallout !

I just need to point out that im getting clise to the end of the main story line and i did cone across a boss fight..... and im positive im heading to another one.... plus there are many moments where you get a hoard of monsters that get summoned and with as much ammo that you use up they prepare you for prior to or after.... but yeah theres one legit boss that launches explosives that you grab and throw back at like 4 or 5 times...... so ign is lying.... that orvthey didnt finish the game..... and i havent had an issue with figuring out what to do... its a common sense thing.... i will say the load screens are enough to make you loose your sanity.... it gets annoying real fast... but other then that im loving this game

It seems to be a great game, just started it a few hours ago, but… WHY tf do I get an average 60 fps with a 9900k and a 2800 RTX ??? I'm also very annoyed that you can't have both the English dialogues mixed with French subtitles. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME! lol.

Best Lovecraft game is still The Elder Scrolls 4:Oblivion with the Deep Ones of Hackdirt.Or maybe Skyrim with the realm of Haermeus Mora..

I'd love to play a lovecraftian game where you get to play as one of the elder gods (preferably ctulhu) it'd be a nice change to have one of the elder gods to be given the chance to be the hero of the story for once

Dudes got no actual depth of knowledge in lovecraftian lore. It’s like he had a friend saying “oh yeah say there are quotes and homages to the story” but then he contradicts his fake knowledge by saying “no boss, NPCs are unaware of monsters around them, etc.” dude, that’s lovecraft 101. They are unaware bc they lack the intellect to see the deeper spiritual dangers around them. The protagonist is smart enough to see it and be aware and it’s about getting out alive, not defeating a boss. Get out with sanity and that’s all humanity can do.

This game is awesome, dont take this review too seriosly. It feels like bioshock and dishonored.

honestly I liked the Sinking CIty. If you don't have any patience or you don't like puzzle game, well you won't like it. It's a bit slow but a great storyline till the end. worth playing it if you're a Cthulhu fan ;-)

Does anybody make a normal 3PS or FPS anymore? Everything is a survival horror or a loot shooter.

This guy should've done more exploring. I saw a black police officer with a darker tone and muttonchops. Looked way different than the brothers he showed. Also, black police officers in 1920's New England? Not very historically accurate.

It took 15 years, but this (and the Call of Cthulhu game from last year) are the sequels to "Dark Corners of the Earth" we always wanted.
