Ahem. This is not the goth national anthem. You're thinking of Temple of Love. It's an easy mistake to make - I mean, lots of people think that Jerusalem is the English national anthem (and it bloody well should be - much better tune and lyrics), but it isn't.
It would be nice to have someone who actually appreciates your old records and didn’t throw them away without your consent (That is what happened to me)
Being a kid in ANY era is a buzz; all eras have their charm. '80s were bad except for the Alt/Goth/Rock vein 💜finding a few like-minds & civilised laxer licensing laws which let 14-15yr olds into Pubs, clubs & gigs. I prefer 21stC, all music ever at our finger tips! No traipsing round sneery record shops with half remembered lyrics or taping it off a mate, then having to re-spool said tape with pen after it randomly explodes, only seeing music vids on 4-channel TV [99% mainstream guff] or paying £1 to view the only 2 alt videos [Damned- Grimly Fiendish or the Ramones] on the Pubs new-fangled video-dukebox'! or Thatcher, nuclear thereat & 'yuppies'. But I DO miss my 1980s waistline, & wonder why I ever, ever wasted time thinking I was 'fat'.. 🙄
Went to a Sisters' gig recently, with 17yr old offspring & her chum; wasn't expecting the gig to be so great-! Kind've blew my mind & re-ignited my love for everything SoM; new, old & inbetween. Also nice to see that besides my fellow 'elders' there were many far younger; good taste is alive! Real music is eternal, never ages, unlike us mere mortals..
@@TheMercury-13Haven't been to a show in ages, and I probably last saw Sisters 20 yrs ago, but after reading your comment, next time they pass through, I'm going to try to go! I'm sure I can somehow let something from my old wardrobe out enough to still look fabulous!
on the dance floor? who says that term anymore? you can dance anywhere you want to.theres no designated spot. i suppose now youll speak about the disco ball at your local dew drop inn.
I hear the roar of a big machine Two worlds and in between Hot metal and methedrine I hear empire down I hear empire down I hear the roar of a big machine Two worlds and in between Love lost, fire at will Dum-dum bullets and shoot to kill I hear dive bombers and Empire down Empire down I hear the sons of the city and dispossessed Get down, get undressed Get pretty but you and me We got the kingdom, we got the key We got the empire, now as then We don't doubt, we don't take direction Lucretia, my reflection, dance the ghost with me We look hard We look through We look hard to see for real Such things I hear, they don't make sense I don't see much evidence I don't feel I don't feel But I don't feel A long train held up by page on page A hard reign held up by rage Once a railroad Now it's done I hear the roar of a big machine Two worlds and in between Hot metal and methedrine I hear empire down We got the empire, now as then We don't doubt, we don't take reflection Lucretia, my direction, dance the ghost with me. 🌌🌌🌌🌄🌄🌄🌄👏👏👏👏👏
@@mjade1673 I don't think they're really referring to the Roman Empire, but the rape of Lucretia by the son of the last king of Rome was what triggered the rebellion that overthrew the kingdom of Rome and began the Republic of Rome.
I think if you are an artist/musician you may not like being labeled. In a similar vain many heavy metal bands of that era denied being metal. Often the answer was ‘Heavy Metal? No, we are more diverse than that’... at my high school in the 80’s there was kind of a war between the Metal fans & alternative/goth fans... I liked both 😄
Mid to late 80s was such a good time for music and being a teenager! Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie and the banshees, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Echo and the Bunnymen, New Order/the division, the smiths, Sinead O’Connor.I could go on and on❤
I agree. I was born 1970, would never change that. The ´80s were magical when it comes to musical developement. I LOVED being a curious teenager in the ´80s.
If you like this style, I'd recommend(besides everything from Sisters ofc) Dreadful Shadows, The Mission, Clan of Xymox and so many more that just don't come to mind right now 😄
With old gothic rock bands we can hear the bass, it's not muffled in the background drowned by guitar, it has an importance. Besides nostalgia it's what keeps me forever in the 80's music.
Oh man that bassline. It's not difficult but it's soooooo good. Been playing that riff on my bass the whole evening. Can't get if out of my head. Awesome song!
Know exactly what you mean mate off to give mine a thrash, sounds like a precision to me, i know Patricia Morrison had a Jazz but Eldritch claimed she never played on anything, as a bass player i alway watch the bass and watching her closely on the (mimed) performances i think he has a point as she barely seems to know the tunes and half the time seems to be playing notes that arent even there, still she was the instantly reconisable face of SOM, more so than Eldritch.
So they recently opened a pretty nice skating rink in my city here in Costa Rica and the dj was playing some 80s music and I had a USB flash drive inside my pocket with this song. Went up to him and told him if he would play this song. Cool guy agreed ( Sisters of Mercy were never really popular down here) and the whole skating rink ended up dancing and skating with this kick ass song. What a kick ass night !
I am familiar with this song from my youth. Listening to it at almost 50 years of age, it makes me realize how much music today is garbage. The composition, bass line and lyrics of this song are hypnotic.
I saw them in Manchester recently and it was one of the Best concerts I have ever been you. They played this right at the end of the set and the crowd was going completely MAD at the time. 😂😂😂😂😂
Now if you go out to a "goth" night the 18-24 year olds are dancing to some shit that sounds like rap minus the ghetto posturing. Nothing really dark or "goth" about the music except that everyone is wearing black.
Yes and in the beginning you had also good afterpunk bands like Killing Joke. You had lots of good music in the eighties. Loved beginning off the ninetees too. Sound garden, Faith no more.
I got into them in the mid 2000s and listened the absolute shit out of them all through high school. The album with this song and the one before it are solid gold. Greatest Hits isn't all that great (couldn't help myself with that pun) but it does have the best versions of a few excellent songs and one very good song I believe is unique to it. If you're interested in hearing more, then check out First and Last and Always (less production values but catchy as hell) or Floodland (which has this song and some other amazing tracks with big production - but I would argue a little more filler than the first album).
Turned 38 and today is the 1st time hearing this song by a band I only heard of. Thanks again, Type O Negative for the intro to an amazing song. I'm envious of you both.
My buddy had a Sisters of Mercy poster on his bedroom wall in the late 80s. He swore that Patricia Morrison's eyes followed him when he was in the room. I believe it.
According to Roman tradition, Lucretia, anglicized as Lucrece, was a noblewoman in ancient Rome, whose rape by Sextus Tarquinius and subsequent suicide precipitated a rebellion that overthrew the Roman monarchy and led to the transition of Roman government from a kingdom to a republic
I was at a party at a night club in Washington DC last week when over the loudspeaker system came this song. . .in all its glory. Damn, was I ever happy.
+frostmaiden85 It was indeed a cool club. Located downtown not far from the Verizon arena. It's a regular nightclub for the kewl people but, on that night, the them was fetish as it was around Halloween. I used to go to clubs back in the '80s where you could here industrial/goth/metal music like this song all the time. Those clubs are few and far between now. Sign of the times.
+The Screaming Severed Heads It wasn't Spellbound. We actually went to that one too but, on different nights. This club is downtown and a regular , popular spot for the hip crowd. I'll look up the name.
That lady is so hot and this song is so damn good. I was just a kid in the 80s and it all might as well have been an old dream I had once, but I can still feel the lingering glow of magic that the 80s had. Now it's gone forever and I miss it.
What an iconic sound. One of those songs that makes you wish you could somehow unhear it and then instead hear it for the first time on the night you rise as a vampire. I feel so lucky to have been born at the start of the 70's so I could live through this era right when I was creating myself by my own will.
Used to dance and flail aggressively all night back in the late '80s and '90s, but those days are over for me too. Hard to do that shit anymore after back surgery and chronic joint pain. Getting old sucks!
Listen to actual Goth from this era... They were always Post Punk to me.. Goth was Human Drama and London After Midnight etc.. Boring mostly... This gets called Darkwave and whatever.... The Smiths are goth now haha.. mislabeled like many.... We got called DeathRocker by the older Punks... Jack from TSOL.. always called me this.. cheers from Huntington Beach CA 🇺🇸
I don't believe it was their original intention which is why they disregarded that title in the past. In reality that's what they actually accomplished in their career.
@@lucysnorebush964 I'm being really serious! Listen to the lyrics "We have the Empire, now as then", for example. The video shows them in an Indian factory, as I remember - India was the most lucrative colony for the UK.
the days when there was alternative/goth clubs downtown with great dark deco and visuals ...with dark corners and big screens with experimental videos with me on acid and rockabillies playing pool and alternative godess dancing on this music and front 242 was a hell of a world apart from today ! ....we were a futuristic generation in a dark past that flew away too soon --- -- - ✈
I'm just thankful my taste led to the goth & industrial clubs & scene in my teens & 20's, while they were still awesome. It was more a way of life than a scene, but you know what I mean. Back in the days of wearing full length black satin gloves & taking 4 hrs to get ready, dropping a tab, doing the two step on the dancefloor & spending a fortune on eyeliner & the most fabulous velvet, lace & leather concoctions. When you'd be called a freak just walking down the street. I do miss it, but I'm just thankful I've mostly always had different & eclectic taste & did the alternative thing rather than boring bland popular genre shite. I'm sure there's a whole new generation of teens discovering all the old favs & bigger old goth & industrial stuff now who are thinking the exact same thing every generation who's discovered it think-that they're completely original & hardcore.
@gigawatt Who knows. Several probably already have. Why do you ask? I can only think of how press & opposing candidates would use someone's past against them in public office, but in that case there's been far more interesting & 'different' politicians & candidates. Take Jello Biafra for example, lead singer of The Dead Kennedies & brilliant highly political spoken word artist. Now he would've totally kicked ass over the farce that is Trump. ;)
A gothic band named The Sisters Of Mercy will be shooting a video for their song in our factory today. So if you see a 90 pound pale man prancing around as if he's making a list for the gas chamber, pay no mind. Business as usual. Also, Friday is suspenders day.
Zoch Buppet What the actual fuck. You don't even know if this guy is American. That's a very generalized statement to make on one internet comment. It's one mistake, calm the fuck down. Jeez.
Not true - listen to "She Past Away". Best new goth band to come out in years! Funny how a band with such an old-school sound can be SO refreshing, but they really are.
Wendigo Heart I just checked them out to see if I'd agree. Looking for good & unique sound. Hard to find these days. Sorry, I didn't care much for it.. Thx, anyway. Sisters will always be First, and Last, and Always! Might I suggest Ghost BC? They're different. Their frontman, Tobias Forge, also has a unique, "I don't give a sh* t" attitude like Andrew and causes internal and external band conflict & controversy. Even has a female bassist. He's not an Eldritch clone or wannabe. Unique but similar. Check it out. Tell me what you think.
The fellow from Rosetta Stone... Miserylab is also good.... There is a new "wave" (excuse the word) of these bands doing this.... She Past Away was good... I have not heard anything from them since 2015 but I am sure they have something coming! Lost Tapes, Empereur, etc. are also on the list.
The fastest 4 minutes in music set to coolest lyrics ever: I hear the roar of a big machine Two worlds and in between Hot metal and methedrine I hear empire down, I hear empire down I hear the roar of a big machine Two worlds and in between Love lost, fire at will Dum-dum bullets and shoot to kill I hear a dive, bombers, and Empire down, empire down I hear the sons of the city and dispossessed Get it down, get undressed Get pretty, but you and me We got the kingdom, we got the key We got the empire, now as then We don't doubt, we don't take direction Lucretia, my reflection Dance the ghost with me
ThirdLantern the coast. dance the coast with me. thats why theyre walking on the beach at the end. get ready. is also supposedly what hes saying. instead of get pretty...
2021, and still remembering playing this bass lick in a cover band in the 80's and still letting my neighbors a block away enjoying it too!!!! DAMN I GREW UP IN A GREAT DECADE!!!
this song made me goth. i was kind of trying to get into goth music and i had listened to some the cure and siouxie and the banshees and i liked it but then i stumbled upon this song and it changed my lifeeeee. i became absolutely obsessed with it and the whole Floodlands album. It was the song that took me from casual fan to goth. No matter how many times I listen to it, it’s always fantastic.
Same. I was actually watching the episode of southpark when stan becomes a goth, and they're telling him to listen to their music and dress like them, so I googled goth music and this was one of the bands. I did not expect to like it so much lol
Hey my oldest is Named Abigail from the King Diamond album "Abigail" so what is wrong with that? And her mother is Named Melissa so see if you can pick out the theme there.
I wanted to name my daughter after the Emmalene song but ended up going Trad Native American with Raven. Although if my daughter has a girl one day, maybe I could talk her into using that name :)
The song and this video is mesmerizing. I'm on a spree of goth/postpunk iconic classics right now, this one, Killing Joke-the Wait and Peter Murphy (Bauhaus)-Cuts You Up. All three absolutely killer!🤘
It's amazing how many songs AHS: Hotel has resurrected for newer and older generations alike. The Cure, Depeche Mode, Joy Division, New Order, Sisters of Mercy, Bahaus, Souix and The Banshees, Peter Murphy, She Wants Revenge. Freaking sweet!!
They should re-record the instruments with modern studio equipment, it would sound so good! He could re-sing it or they could use the old vocals, it would still be awesome!
