Yep even the Skids used to get gobbed on at the gigs before the headline acts. seen it many times at Clouds and Tiffanys Edinburgh. Best line from Jobson was stop gobbin or we're just gonna do slow songs 😂😂😂😂
Stuart was truly gifted. An inspiration for all us punky herberts and musicians. And I have been a fan since 1980. Born in Manchester, raised in Scotland, but cherished internationally. 🇬🇧 🎸 🏴 🎸 🌏
19 years old Jobson is here, Johnny Rotten was 19 also with the pistols back in the day, what are our 19yr olds doing, sitting on their bloody play stations no doubt, give me this era again, just brilliant
Alex Turner was 15 when the Arctic Monkeys formed, so what? Kids just aren't in bands any more, quite apart from how the entire industry is inverted and people now just watch stuff on youtube or spotify instead of buying records (go figure) there is now hardly anywhere for them to play. That's not their fault. The world has changed and older generations are as culpable as anyone. There's still bands out there though, if you care to look.
Am 57 this year, still got my mohican, not many teeth, but can still listen to the bestest tunes of punk,. The 70,s an the 80,s were "the" years for it..
Proud to say I live in their hometown of Dunfermline, the Skids were and still are legends in the town and let’s not forget after Stuart Adamson formed Big Country from the Skids they went to write some iconic tunes. Thanks for your post and Hello from Dunfermline Scotland.
I am English and married a lass from Clydebank. With all the bollocks my country generates I AM DROWNING IN SHAME . Onward and upward Scotland. I wish you well >
Terrific song from a great band from way back when music was original and unique!! Great riffs, and such an iconic sound. Stuart, you are sorely missed RIP
We loved it all growing up but we never knew how lucky we were to have the music of the seventies. Little did we know that people would still be talking about it fourty years later. What a time we had
I was going through my mother's 7" singles today, some I knew, some I didn't. One of the ones I didn't know was Skids and it was 'Masquerade' (w/ 'Out of Town') and I fell in love immediately. Played it over and over, eventually looking up the rest of their stuff online and have just been obsessed. I've just wanted to talk to her about them and ask questions, but unfortunately I can't, and especially missed her today. Just some of the catchiest shit I've heard in a while, even bought some strings for my shitty Fender (usual guitar is always in Drop A) so I can try learn some of their songs. What a band.
Stuart Adamson went on to form Big Country, where he achieved some commercial success. But the unmistakable sound of his guitar is heard in both bands.
Only joking Richard ,born ,raised in Easterhoose not Easterhouse ,we do have to keep the intellectuals out of our space, they don't have the intellectual ability to get to our level, do you agree?
Like everyone else on here, I never had a clue what he was singing either - it was just a great tune - but what a shame, given that the lyrics are so incredibly powerful and moving. What an author! See below: Into the valley, betrothed and divine Realizations no virtue but who can define Why soldiers go marching, those masses a line This disease is catching from victory to stone Ahoy, ahoy, land, sea and sky Ahoy, ahoy, boy, man and soldier Ahoy, ahoy, deceived and then punctured Ahoy, ahoy, long may they die Out of concealment, blank and stark eyed Why so uncertain this culture deceives Prophesied, brainwashed tomorrow's demise All systems failing the placards unroll Ahoy, ahoy, land, sea and sky Ahoy, ahoy, boy, man and soldier Ahoy, ahoy, deceived and then punctured Ahoy, ahoy, long may they die Time for the audit, gathering trial La la la la la, la la la la la, la la la la la, la la la la la Collector's dilemma, repositioned and filed Ahoy, ahoy, land, sea and sky Ahoy, ahoy, boy, man and soldier Ahoy, ahoy, deceived and then punctured Ahoy, ahoy, long may they die Into the valley, betrothed and divine Realizations no virtue but who can define Why soldiers go marching, those masses a line This disease is catching from victory to stone La la la la la, la la la la la, la la la la la, la la la la la Into the valley, betrothed and divine La la la la la, la la la la la, la la la la la, la la la la la Into the valley, betrothed and divine
There used to be a Ytube clip with someone speaking the words, might have been Jobson himself, and its a very powerful piece of work, almost like an old poem.
Red Rum I always thought he sang: Into the valley, lives a man divine Realisations no virtue but who can decide When soldiers go marching, they march in a line
I saw Big Country back in the early 80's, they were as good live as they were on record, it's a human tragedy about Stuart, he was so talented, but depression and alcoholism can be overwhelming I guess, he'll be missed. I feel privileged that I grew up during the late 70's and early 80's new wave/punk stuff, it was really ground breaking. I stopped listening to the charts around 1991, it wasn't as good as it had been ......
Great tune, and Stuart adding his masterclass. The sound he gave his own creation has never been repeated. Classic Keltic vibes, incredible sound to create. Thank you Stuart 🙏
Oaks from Acorns... one of the best tracks of the punk era without all the bullshit, but with that fledgling electric guitar bagpipe sound that became the magnificent Big Country. Genius. Stuart you are sadly missed.
The songs of Stuart Adamson will last forever. As long as there is injustice, inequality and a society that doesn't value the opinion of the working class. Visionary, legend and a victim of the times, if he'd been born ten year later the change in attitudes may have saved him. I will miss him always and when I walk out in the cold and the snow I will always be in 'Wonderland' RIP you silly lad.x
John Peel's Rockpile; Whispering Bob and The Old Grey Whistle Test; that Bill Grundy Pistols interview. Gigs with a bit of physical risk to them. The sheer visceral excitement of those times. Marvellous it was. I tell you, it was marvellous.
Only 17, so sadly never seen The Skids but was always brought up on them along with big country as a result of being a pars fan. Stuart Adamson is truly a legend of the music industry and an inspiration. Such a shame that we tragically lost him but his roots on Dunfermline will never forget him or the legacy he had at East End Park. #ProudToBeAPar!
Good fit you, Kid. Your alright in my book. I'm 59 she was blessed to see Big Country even they played at t Hofsta University back in the day. Great days they were she still are through this music. Go make some adventure of your own, Lad. Keto the Spirit ALIVE.
This and also some of Big Country’s songs were on two Scottish themed compilation albums my mum owned growing up (Pride and Pride 2: The Very Best of Scotland)
Into the valley Betrothed and divine Realisations no virtue But who can define Why soldiers go marching Those masses a line This disease is catching From victory to stone Ahoy! Ahoy! Land, sea and sky Ahoy! Ahoy! Boy, man and soldier Ahoy! Ahoy! Deceived and then punctured Ahoy! Ahoy! Long may they die Out of concealment Blank and stark eyed Why so uncertain This culture deceives Prophesised, brainwashed Tomorrow's demise All systems failing The placards unroll Ahoy! Ahoy! There ys go, enjoy ;)
LOL I was just showing this to my (appalled ) daughter, NY born to Scottish me; I like showing her things from when I was growing up. It is a really good tune, but as for the words; I have the title, "ahoy ahoy" and "la la la la" Am I doing good? :)
Loved the skids as a 10 yr old punk. Yep and I got in the gigs to. I stopped listening to music when Stuart died. Big country were amazing. In my opinion Stuart was the most natural talented guitarist, lyricist to date, I hope your screeching that e-bow in heaven to the gods my friend. So sadly missed✌️✌️✌️
This song has it all - energy, good production, attitude, long shelf life .............and words you can't understand! Still sounding massive in 2013. Superb stuff!
I had never heard of The Skids until they came to Bath, supporting The Stranglers in early 1979. Way more exciting than the main act. Jobson's energy and dance moves ( hybrid pogo/Northern Soul) left a deep impression.
Reminds me of the days of cassette tapes, 3 channel UK telly, dark nights, small gigs, 18 year old girls, times were hard but the music was fcukin brilliant!
Future rhythm guitar section of Big Country..Stuart was My hero..and a Genius..I still ask why he left us and will never forget his music..God bless you sir..
Had the pleasure of chatting with Richard Jobson about his days with The Skids following an encounter in Luton. I just loved the raw energy from this period. Stuart Adamson was a class act & his memory will live on!
I came here because of Big Country and Stuart Adamson, you can HEAR shades of Big Country in this song m this is where Stuart cut his chops. Awesome 😎🤗🥰☺️🙏🏽✌🏻☝🏿🙏🏻✌🏻✌🏽👍💗💞💖💖
Riff and a half pure class. Even Jobson's weird dance move can't detract from the punk rock quality. Stuart Adamson the reluctant punk but wrote some great songs The Saints are Coming is another classic.
+Jeff Jeffery Into the Valley Pizza, man…Divine! the hearse is no virtue but who can define? the sodas go moshing those masses alive tis the season’s cat skin from big Tourettes in stone a-hoy, a-hoy fancy a stye? a-hoy, a-hoy buy me a soda! a-hoy, a-hoy i sit there and conquer a-hoy, a-hoy love me to die!
My brother who is 7 years younger than me was into all this music. This song is iconic and thanks to him I was introduced to a whole new style of rock.
Loved Rosa Mota back in the day! First saw them at the Square in Harlow. Bought a copy of Drag For a Drag at the gig, and then saw them loads of times afterwards and bought everything else as it came out. Happy days!
One of my all time favourite bands, Stuart Adamson’s guitar playing with the skids was just brilliant, I’ve never really liked the stuff that he did with Big Country, but the stuff he did with the skids was just mind blowing
The lyrics to this are very 'intellectual'; check them out if you can decipher. I'm not joking; I'm a big fan of their lyrics; they were very intelligently written.
glad, I'm not the only person who thought that..haha,. so funny when I actually found out what the hell he was saying years later - still didn't make much sense
I'm 47 and I've loved this song since I first heard it 30 odd years ago. And I never understood a single word either, apart from the title I just looked up the lyrics and jon dobs is right. Still none the wiser :)
Comme on awwaoy ayorww, coomme coomme , bbtoru loooobbbveee. - it makes perfect sense - llaaa laa llaaaa lla laaa lla llaaaaaa, soldiers goes marching.
Great video of punk rock dancing by the lead singer. Exactly what we did, jumping around arms waving outstretched, then going hunched like a chimpanzee and air punching or air kicking. It's a forgotten dance form.... not sure if this could be literally the only video there is of the dance style
Awesome, I'm a huge Big Country fan from US. His soul spoke to me and his art was amazing. If not for U2, Big Country would be the greatest band from the New Wave era. But 2nd place is damn good too. Was grateful to have seen them live at a college near where I live. I know they heard me, I was the guy yelling "HARVEST HOME." had no idea they play from a set list. I love and miss him/them so much. Be blessed John, and be a blessing to others.
