Jay"s iyagi Could you answer a question for me: If you have a speaker with an impedance of 6ohms, which post should it be connected to, the 4ohms or the 8ohms???
Thank you for your very informative review of this affordable DAC. It's just the thing, that I'm looking for. I really enjoy your in-depth reviews. I only watch your YT channel and that of the Audiophiliac. Your passion for audio serves us all so well. Cheers!
In my opinion, the effect on sound quality of a superior power supply is not to be underestimated! If the battery pack you were using employs some kind of inverter to convert DC power from the batteries into usable AC power for the DAC, it may be the source of your problems. Same for combining power and audio signals in a single cable. Perhaps you could also experiment with a linear power supply? Anyway, thanks for the video!
Boost IC is likely a charge pump, using capacitive charge vs a transformer, so not a typical noise source. The term DAC means digital-to-analog converter, so the main DAC ICs inside do the "DC to AC" process you're referring to, and don't require a separate circuit. Most of these ICs will operate from a 3.6v battery voltage or 5v USB voltage, so there is likely no need for extra DC conversion either...
It will be interesting to hear what others have to say when comparing it to DACs from SMSL and Topping etc. under $500. Up against even the $80 SU-1 Dac will be interesting.
It is easy solution for usb c only dac. Y-cable. This is usb cable which splits and separate branch is going to power only (5V positive) and second branch has cut off 5v line and supplies only data. The connection is made this way that ground is shared for both, so signal levels have the same reference what supply has. It is also easy DIY stuff....
You can connect this to the aux of a vehicle. This is what I do with a Blume Auris for convenience purposes as it’s a very portable option and sounds better than the Bluetooth integrated in my car. Great review!
Hey Jay, you really need to try more, there’s a plethora of portable headphone dac amplifiers like xduoo, aune, fijo, Ifi, shanling and many more, there are even r to r ones too.
You have to try the Woo Audio Tube Mini Portable DAC and Tube Amp! Also, there is a Slash3, a more affordable one, it could be a good idea if you try to review it as well!
Sounds interesting ...but it seems they need to do a mark 2 version... perhaps slightly bigger, no bluetooth(?), with coax, optcal and usb connections and a better power supply optionsl...for say for $250 and bingo!
its for classic integrated or normal amps for upgrade. not for individual use. of course full sized dacs are better. some people want to hide their high tech system from ready setup vintage set.
I am wanting to replace my internal DAC of my receiver with this little guy. Do you need to access the button to be able to switch from the optical to Bluetooth? Or if I have optical connected, does Bluetooth stay on?
Personally, I wouldn’t buy it without the second USB-C input. Just because I would want the additional 45 degree stage plus the ability to not have to Bluetooth only. 🎉😊
Hi. Is it possible for you to do a review on Master & Dynamic MW65 and MW75 bluetooth headset?? It would be greatly appreciated as I know that your not a fan of bluetooth. Thank you and my best regards Jeffrey
I've been looking for a relatively low cost DAC for myMac Mini M2 based home-entertainment system. It's a 2.1 system, and right now it's running an SMSL DAC that I have been thoroughly unimpressed with. Any thoughts on this product in that application? The system is running an XTZ A2-300, Tekton Impact Monitors, and a REL T/9X. The device would be running off a USB-C output from the Mac for both sound input and power. Main usage is browsing youtube/netflix and listening to music on Tidal. If you don't recommend it for this option, what would be a better solution?
Very interesting, i almost want to buy this just to try it out on some different gear versus some internal/external dacs just to hear how it performs. I would be upset if it did just aswell as my d90le lol
@jayiyagi Cables/devices do exist that separate UBS power from USB data. I posted suggested search words that will lead to one solution, but it was apparently deleted. No, there was no URL embedded -- only suggested words. Hard to be helpful...
Hi Jay How does this compare to the Audioquest Cobalt? That’s been out for several years, so I’m assuming you’ve heard it. I own one and find that IMHO it ticks the same boxes for me and is powered by my phone without being a major drain. Thanks for all you do!
@Jayiyagi You have been reviewing 10K to 20K gear off late, and you have lost the feel of what a 1K DAC should sound..😂. Don't compare this this 🦐 to a 500 or 1000 dollar DAC for god's sake. I understand you have to run ur channel and make money as well, but pls make sure it doesn't harm your reputation or ability. We audiophiles look forward for some great content, same time we don't accept bull shit. Tks & Brgds.❤
