Claire Calvert of The Royal Ballet dances the Lilac Fairy's solo in this landmark production of Petipa’s classic ballet, to Tchaikovsky's glorious music. Subscribe to our channel and find out more at www.roh.org.uk/productions/the-sleeping-beauty-by-marius-petipa
The Sleeping Beauty holds a special place in The Royal Ballet’s repertory. It was the ballet with which the Company reopened the Royal Opera House in 1946 after World War II, its first production at its new home in Covent Garden. Margot Fonteyn danced the role of the beautiful Princess Aurora in the first performance, with Robert Helpmann as Prince Florimund. Sixty years later, in 2006, the original 1946 staging was revived by then Director of The Royal Ballet Monica Mason and Christopher Newton, returning Oliver Messel’s wonderful designs and glittering costumes to the stage.
The masterful 19th-century choreography of Marius Petipa is combined with sections created for The Royal Ballet by Frederick Ashton, Anthony Dowell and Christopher Wheeldon. Together they create an enchanting sequence of gems in the ballet repertory - from the iconic Rose Adage, when Aurora meets her four royal suitors, and the lilting Garland Waltz to the Vision Pas de deux, as Florimund sees Aurora for the first time, and the celebratory divertissements and final pas de deux that bring the ballet to its glorious close. Throughout, Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky’s masterful score takes ballet music to a height of passion, sophistication and intensity that arguably has never been surpassed.

I know some people are saying that her jumps looked a little heavy and she looked a little bit nervous but this lady was trying to make sure that every single fifth was on public record and boy was it ever and every single fourth position was perfectly crossed as well. I’m sure in the preceding years she has lightened up a bit but wow this is some very very exact technique on display here.

When I'm older, I will dance this. Maybe not on a stage, because my body is not made to be a professional ballet dancer, but I will dance this. Because Ballet is such a wonderful sport and I sadly didn't realize it early enough. I danced Ballet since I was 3 but I never wanted to do it professionally-- until I was 12. And then it was too late. But we all can dream, right? :)

Ms. Calvert is an excellent dancer, but quite soft jointed, which can lend the appearance of being less technically proficient than one is, particularly in medium-sized jumps.
@mortifera123

Tbh I think that's just this variation. The music is extremely slow and heavy, and pretty much any version of this is going to look a bit stiff and formal, particularly the slow sissones. Her dance is technically wonderful, and all her positions are pretty much perfect.

@@Guims83 The Lilac Fairy variation danced by the Russians and the French is _not_ the original. Petipa choreographed 2 different versions of this variation, and this is one here is very close to one of them. The other version, apparently choreographed for his daughter Marie (the creator of the role) was reconstructed by Ratmansky for ABT's Veronika Part.
